The Ice Cold Princess

The Earth Saga:

The Awakening of the Scribe: Part V

By Sailor Nena

Princess Serena was sitting beside a still-glass pond.  She was wearing a long, princess cut, beige crochet dress, which was made up of abstract moons.  Her long curly main was loose and caressing the part of her feet her dress was not.  She had the calm rosy face of a porcelain doll from the heavens.  The soft, warm, loving wind would embrace her cheeks while she finished making a crown of wild flowers.  There was not a cloud in the sky, or a leave out of place.

Whom ever looked upon this sight could have sworn they were looking at a portrait of a young goddess in a clearing, or at least that is what her only observer thought.  He was a knight covered in his white armored that had the face of a golden lion on his chest and on his shield.  He sat perfectly perched on his white stallion.  He had to have her.  She was too perfect, too sweet, too innocent, and too free to glance upon alone.  He needed to own her, to claim her uncivilized manner.

With a swift kick, he raced his horse into the clearing; the noise startled out princess.  She stood to run, but it was too late; the white knight had grabbed her and forced her on his horse.  He rode into the woods as Serena struggled to get away.  Though he radiated with the glory of being undefeated in battle and though he had a reputation deserving of the most gentle of gentleman, Serena resisted him.  She abhorred being in his arms: they were too fake for her innocent ways.

As they rode into the woods, they came upon anther rider, the Black Knight.  His armor was as black as coal, except for his code of arms, which was a sword leaning against a rose vine.  His black stallion kicked his front legs in the air defiantly and hissed at the White Knight.  With a loud whistle from the White Knight, three blood hungry magnificent hunting dogs appeared from in between the trees.  He placed the rebellious princess on the ground and gave the dogs the order to guard.

“Your reputation precedes you, Black Knight!” the White Knight’s voice was cold and arrogant.  “You have taken many women to your castle by force, but you will NOT take mine!  I am the White Knight!  No man has defeated me in battle, and you shall not be the first!”  He raised his sword over his head and charged.  The Black Knight did not move; as soon as his opponent was close enough, he hit the White Knight on his upper abdominal with a swift move of his sword.  The blow was potent, and it threw the White Knight off his horse.  The Black Knight dismounted and faced his adversary without fear.  Their swords danced violently and gruesomely in the receding afternoon.  Our princess watched helpless and unable to escape as the dogs barked fiercely and examined her with hungry eyes.  In a fatal mistake by the White Knight, his enemy was able to overpower him.  The dogs ran in fear at the sight of their fallen master in a pool of his own blood.

The Black Knight approached Serena and asked, “Are you all right Milady?”   She nodded; she was not afraid.  He came closer and removed his helmet; she stared into his lively midnight blue eyes.  Slowly, he took her into his arms and claimed her lips as his own, but it was different.  It was more as if they had deliberated this kiss for months, and she had given him her lips for the right to live in his arms.

            BEEP-BEEP BEEP-BEEP BEEP-BEEP

“HUH?”  Serena half opened one eye.  “It’s time to get up already?  Why does that stupid thing always go off at the best part?” She whined.

“How can she be going out with that guy? She should know better!”  Darien complained to Andrew over coffee.

“And he is a bad choice because…?”

“He isn’t right! He will date her today and be with someone else tomorrow!”

“So he is just like you…or at least what you have become lately!”

What? I am not like that!”

“Really?  Then what do you call dating a new girl each week!  What’s wrong?  I know that you have a reputation a player, but you don’t like cheap meaningless relationships!  In fact, without counting your recent behavior and blind dates, I think you have really dated five girls all your life.”

“I don’t…It’s that…I mean…I DON’T KNOW!  I guess is that I’ve been feeling more and more lonely lately!”

          “What do you mean?”

“I envy you, Andrew; you have no idea how badly I want what you and Rita have…but it seems that as more time passes, the more hopeless it becomes.  What if I never find her?”

“Well, you are not going to find her by going through women like you go through your tissue box!  She will come when the time is right.  Besides, aren’t you a little young to be worrying about this?  I mean, you have at least three fourths of your life ahead of you!  You will find her, or…your car isn’t red!”

“It isn’t!  It’s dark rose petal red!”  They both laughed at his joke.

“So, tell me about this boy that Serena is seeing.”

“He is the type that any girl would bring home to mother.  He even convinced her father into letting them date, but he is more interested in his hair than in the girl by his side.  I think you know him, Leonardo White?”

          “Oh, him.”

“See, you understand me! But she won’t listen!”

“Darien, answer this as truthfully as you can, did you warn her or did you forbid her?”  He did not answer.  “Then, why are you so surprised she didn’t listen.  Anyway, I wouldn’t worry; Serena isn’t the type of girl who ignores a person’s true self for long.  She will soon see what an empty shell he is and end it.”

“You are right.  I just hope she doesn’t get hurt.”

“Hi Andrew! OH, hi Darien!” Serena finished in disgust.

“Hi meatball head.”  Darien said without much feeling.  Serena looked at Andrew questionably.

“He’s had one of those days.  Be nice!”  Andrew said as he went back to work.

“You’re going out with Leonardo this weekend?”

“Yes.”  She solemnly answered as she sat down.  Anyone around them would have thought that Darien’s next phrase would be,

‘I will not stand in the way of you two.’ But it was not because they were not dating and because, even though Darien would not admit it, there was no way in heaven, earth, or hell that he would not.

“So, are you going to tell me why the sudden act of elegant kindness, or do I have to guess?” Monique asked Darien over dinner.  They were at one of Tokyo’s most exclusive restaurants.  Usually, people have to call three years in advance to get a table, which is not so bad because it will take you three years to save up for a half way decent dinner.  Darien was friends with the Chef’s son, so he was able to get a free dinner.

“Well after my recent behavior with women, some of which being close friends of yours, I figure that I owed you something more that the usual pizza, chips, soda and movie we have Thursday nights.”

“So, to be forgiven, you make me clear up my Friday night to eat at an expensive restaurant, while my escort spends the night checking out the girl three tables behind me?”

          “Huh?”

“Darien, please, I notice that you have been more interested in spying on that table all through dinner, after all, when was the last time you and I agree on politics?”

“We never do…” Darien started a bit confused.

“Well, all through dinner you kept saying, ‘I completely agree’ and ‘you are so right’ even when I spoke of politics.”

“I did that?”  Darien asked surprised.

“Yes, now spill it!  What’s going on between you and your study date?” Darien gave her a strange look.  “Like I didn’t notice that Serena is the girl you have spent all night admiring.”  She joked.

“I AM NOT admiring; I’m just watching out for her.  There is a difference.”

“Yeah, and last time I checked, you were all for people making mistakes together.  Oh!” she stopped herself short before continuing, “I didn’t know…”

          “Didn’t know what?”

“That you were interested in her.”

“ME, AND SERENA, ARE YOU CRAZY?”  Darien asked half insulted and half embarrassed.

“Well, it isn’t so far out.”

“C’mon, lets dance.”  As soon as he saw Serena and Leonardo enter the dance floor, he practically dragged Monique to the dance floor.  The band started to play Crying Like a Church on Monday.

I was dancing

With your shadow

Slow down memories hall

I said wait

Have I been seduced and forgotten

You said baby haven’t we all

Darien worked his way close enough to Serena to make sure that Leonardo did not move his hand to far south.  Annoyed and sensing Darien’s true provocative, Monique made a quick turn that made her switch partners with Serena.  She understood Darien’s rationalized concerned when it took Leonardo five full minutes realized that he was not dancing with Serena.

Serena was shocked immediately to find Darien dancing with her.  In fact, she blushed a bright red the minute she saw him.  “Darien, what are you doing here?”

          “Same as you, dancing.”

“Is that your way of saying that you are on a date too?” she giggled nervously.

Now I don’t like crying

Because it only gets me wet

But I can’t help failing

To remember to forget you

And I know it’s going to be a long time

“I am here with a friend; you know her, Monique?”

“Yeah, she’s cool.”  Serena looked around in search of her date and found him still not realizing whom he was dancing with.  “You know Darien, my dad trusts me with Leo.”

“Really?”  Darien asked not knowing where she was heading with the comment.

“And if he does, so should you!”  She added sternly.  “He is my boyfriend, and you owe him the respect you give the boyfriends of any of your other friends!”

I was hiding in your bedroom

When I saw him come inside

I can’t live in his shadow

Is that where I’m dancing till I die?

“That means, he will get none!” he answered rather rudely.  “I worry about you, like I worry about Monique when she starts dating a new guy, and I’m not going to stop because you find it annoying, Meatball Head!”

“You can worry all you want, but that does not give you the right to tail me on my date!  I did not appreciate being spied on all through dinner!  You are not my brother, father, or my ex to be doing this to me!”

Now I don’t light candles

Because they make me see the light

That I can’t help failing

To remember to forget you

And I know it’s gonna be a long time

Darien stopped dancing and gave her a stern look.  “No, I’m not.”  He turned and to himself finished.  “I’m something more; I am your other half.”

And I’m crying like a church on Monday

Praying for these feelings to go away

So do me a favor baby

Put down your new god

And love me like Sunday again

Serena was swept with a sudden feeling of disgust for herself.  “He was only trying to be polite…trying to be a friend.”  She saw the Leo still did not realize that anything had happened.  “At least he was paying attention!”  She rushed out of the restaurant after Darien.  “He has to forgive me! He has to!”  She thought to herself as she called after him.  She ran to him in her elegant velvet short black dress, and caught him in front of the restaurant, taking a short cut to his car.  He was shocked to see her run to him, but pleased that she was alone.  He did not understand why he felt they belonged together, but he did, and he needed to know if she felt the same way too, though he was ignoring all of this at the time.  “I’m sorry.”  She began out of breath.  “You were just trying to be nice…to spare me some pain, and I…I’m sorry.”  She finished.

“Apology accepted, if you can forgive me for not trusting your capabilities to handle yourself.”  He stretched his hand out; she was about to accept it, unaware his intentions were to eliminate all doubts with a kiss, when the floor began to shoot up water.  He quickly realized what had happened; he had taken the short cut through the floor fountain.  She shrieked in delight, and took his hand.  He led her out of the water, and placed his wet jacket on her.

“At leas he is thoughtful, unlike…” Serena thought sadly.

“Let me drive you home…I know you came with Leo, but after getting you soaked, it is the least I can do.”  He finished when she began to complain.

“Darien, it is not that…I don’t want to get the leather interior of your car all wet.”  He couldn’t help but laugh and point at his wet suit.  “And Monique?”

“I have a feeling she already found another way home.”  He said as he saw his friend exit with a gorgeous waiter and give him the thumbs up signal.

          “Well, then I’ll gladly accept.”

          “Your date?”

“Who…oh Leo…I think he will eventually figure out that I left when he realizes that neither I nor my bag are there.”

“Were you planning to come with me home?” he joked as he led he to his car.

“No, I was going to take a cab, but at least this way, I can save my allowance for the arcade.”  She smiled as he opened the car door for her.  She took a deep breath and realized she was wishing he had been her date all night.  “Am I losing it?” she asked herself.

“So, where do you live, Meatball Head?”  He asked as he buckled up.

“No.” She answered herself as she remembered how annoying he was.

“So you just left him there?”  Lita asked surprised as I opened my locker.

“Yup, serves him right for not realizing he was no longer dancing with me!”  Serena informed as she continued to tell her friends what had happened the Friday night before.

          WHAT THE…” I started.

“WHAT’S WRONG?”  Mina, Lita, Amy, Rei, and Serena asked as the saw the pink, red, yellow, and white rose petals fall from my locker.  It was filled to the brim with them.  They began to giggle as I examined the mess.

“Look,” Serena pointed in the locker, “is that a note?”  I took out the card and made the atrocious mistake of reading it out loud:

To my lovely beauty,

Please honor me with your company this Friday.  I promise you the best dinner of your life.

Yours truly,

Sergio

The girls began to shriek in excitement.  Tinisha, Sandra, Veronica when I get my hands on you, you will all wish you had never been born!”  They came out of their hiding places quite shocked at my response to the surprise.  Didn’t I make it perfectly clear that I was not interested?”  I asked with a chill in my voice that none, not even my self had ever heard before.

“We thought,” Tinisha began, “that the surprise would help you change your mind.”  She was scared of this new side of me.

          “WELL, IT DIDN’T!”

“COOL DOWN!”  Sandra ordered.  She was a determined young woman, who valued herself too much to ever allow herself to be intimidated, but she did permit her belly to serge with anger.  He did something extremely nice and romantic!”  I’m not sure whose voice was harder, hers or mine.  He also happens to be a very handsome, almost perfect guy who is interest in YOU!”

“Your right,” I began in a much calmer voice. “I shouldn’t be yelling at you guys!”  They all smiled at me.  “I should be yelling at him!”  I said with renewed anger.  Where is he?  Someone is going to pick up this mess and it isn’t going to be me!”

“Don’t worry about the mess.” He said frigidly as he entered the locker room.  “I take it you are going to turn me down for dinner again.”

“I’m not interested in breaking bread with you.”  I answered coldly.

“As you wish.”  He turned and added, “Milady!”

“Arggg!”  I kicked my locker to vent some anger.  I wish I could ring his neck!

“Why don’t you?  Overwhelming odds never bothered you before, or is it…” Veronica gave me a wicked smile as she finished, “that you actually LIKE him?”

“Aren’t you going to help her?”  Sailor Gemini asked me as I stood, uniform and all, on a roof observing Serena, who had just encountered a monster.

“Not until she needs me.”  Before Serena could transform, Tuxedo Mask came to the rescue.  “It looks like I didn’t need to change after all.”  He attacked the octopus-man type creature (there really is no other way to describe it.  He was like Ursula from the Little Mermaid, but male and spikes on his tentacles).  The creature blocked most of Tuxedo Mask’s attacks, and when he had the chance, he released a shower of spikes.  He blocked all but the one that hit him on his shoulder.

          TUXEDO MASK! NOOOOOO!

“I guess you were wrong!”  Gemini said as he jumped from the roof.  “Hey, ugly!  Guess what.  I’m going to destroy you…GEMINI TWIN LIGHT ATTACK!”  From his finger two lights, one black one white, raced towards the monster, which disappear in retreat.  Gemini approached his friend who was being bandaged up by Serena.  She had ripped her uniform skirt to make a bandage.

“Thank you for saving my life.”  She softly whispered as she wondered if he knew who she really was.

“You should thank Gemini, he saved us both.”  He said uncomfortably.  His cape, jacket and shirt were off, and he was not used to such warm and personal treatment from her.

“Na, you can take the credit for this one.”  Gemini said as he disappeared.  Tuxedo Mask did the same, as soon as Serena was pleased with his bandage.  “So, have you reconsidered dinner?”

“You mean because you made sure I remembered that I promised you a date?  Don’t worry you will get your date; it just won’t be a dinner date!”

          “When then?”

“When hell freezes over and Satan gives out free sleigh rides with a smile on his face[1]1”

“I was hoping for something sooner.  How about next week?”

“Get a life!”  I said as I disappeared.

“Pathetic!  Just pathetic!  How can you let yourselves be beaten time and time again by a brat from the MOON?” An angry female asked.  “And you call yourselves Beryl’s decedents?  Pathetic!”  She was a young girl, looked no older than seventeen.  Her rich brown hair was in a low braid that reached the end of her back.  She was scrawny, but she did have a full face with a dead expression.  She wore a top that had only one sleeve, which was like an of the shoulder band.  Her semi-transparent skirt hung of her left hip, and she wore ankle boots.  By her side was her sword, which should not be confused with the sword shaped earrings she wore.  She rearranged her bangs with her hand and stated, “I will gladly deal with the Moon Brat, my people and hers have a score to settle.”

“You shouldn’t underestimate her, Ultura.”  Astron warned.  “My plan is so much better devised; just give it up.”

“Excuse me,” Kassandra said just above a whisper as she entered the room.  “His majesty has decided to go with both your plans.”

“That suits me just fine!”  Ultura said as she vanished.
