When Wakaba writes a letter to the vice president of the student council, it is carelessly thrown away, then hung on the school's bulliton board so people can make fun of it. To defend Wakaba's feelings, Utena challenges the student council vice president to a duel.

Because all student council members wear a ring like Utena's (her prince gave her a ring), the vice president does not understand what Utena means. The student council participate in duels for possesion of a mysterious power embodied in a quiet, mysterious girl, Anthy. Utena is told by the vice president to meet him in the forbidon forest after school for there duel. When she gets there, there is a castle floating upside down in the sky. Anthy is there. She places a rose on Utena's chest and another one on the vice president's chest. "If the rose is knocked off your chest, you lose." The vice president pulls a sword from Anthy's chest. Even though Utena only brought a wooden practice sword, she wins the duel. Anthy is engaged to the current duelist champion, which is now Utena.
Sound freaky? It's very complicated and confusing sometimes. I was never confused though.
