Magic is the tangible component of the fabric of reality. It is both existant matter and non-existant void. Sentient beings discovered how to utilize these forces to change the world around them.
Basically what a magic-user at the time of Adea can do, is to destroy or displace parts of the plane of existance with magic. In simpler terms, imagine a river with a tall tree nearby. A mage wants to cross the river and decides to use magic to simplify it. He breaks apart the roots of the nearby tree with a few blows to the roots, and the tree falls in a general direction predicted by the mage. The dead tree now becomes a makeshift bridge.
The mage has no idea how much effort it took to grow a tree. The effort it took for him to kill it in order for him to simplify some already simple task was nothing compared to the complex systems of life needed for the tree to live.
This is the crudeness of magic achieved by sentient beings at this time. Knowing only their own aims, beings of the world had no idea that they were actually meddling with the fabric of reality.
And yet, not all sentient beings on Yinkha were ignorant. The first mages college was established in Gean Kawa, where mages explore the potential dangers and great rewards of this relatively unknown force.
