By sacrificing half of its extended-range firepower, the Rainmaker-G more than makes up for it in long-range firepower. This design features a custom chassis using lighter endo steel. This 'mech also features an extra light engine. This variant has proven to be quite deadly within 540m, although it can still fare well against sniper 'mechs and many other long-ranged 'mechs. Ishitandai MechWyrks was reluctant to commit to this design because of its vulnerabilty to heavy 'mechs with LRMs, like the Catapult. A Catapult was likely to survive the first volley and close to within missile range, yet stay out of range of the slower mech's deadly rail guns. The design went through, however, since the Raimaker was likey to be supported by several other 'mechs. Ishitandai MechWyrks, however, does not wish to tie up Hegemony-era and Star League-era manufacturing equipment on this 'mech, so production is very limitted.
To further counter the threat of long-range missiles, many Rainmaker-Gs have had their support lasers removed and more armor installed. With the additional armor, the Rainmaker's autocannons have more time to disable an enemy's LRMs.
This variant has been resurfacing in the inner shpere as rail gun technology is rediscovered.
In recent years, some mechwarriors have "recycled"
parts from Rainmakers making a hybrid of the UDM-9M and the
UDM-9G. This variant is often refered to as the UDM-9X or RAIN-2.
