Although the UDM-9A Rainmaker could destroy most medium 'mechs before they could even close into firing range, unit commanders wanted more firepower. While they were hoping for at least a set of 5-count missile racks, Ishitandai MechWyrks added LRM-10s and extra support lasers; it was felt that the 2 missile racks more than made up for the missing light autocannon. The UDM-9M also supports 5 extra heat sinks to dissapate the additional heat generated by the missile launchers. The resulting lower center of gravity made this variant much easier to pilot than the UDM-9A, despite its casual gait.
A further variation on the UDM-9M includes trading a medium
laser for more armor.

This mech was designed by Jason Caesar and Kioshi Ishitandai. This 'mech was designed to be able to continuously fire all of its weapons as well as run while firing all of its long-range weapons. Since there is a considerable range difference in this design's weapons, heatsinks can easily be removed and replaced with armor. Even with the additional armor, there is a chance that some of the 'mech's weapons will be disabled as combatants close, dismissing the need for the heat sinks. The designers were acting in the spirit of the "zero-heat" 'mech.
