Dr. Tomo stood over his array of test tubes, each containing a Daimon pod ovum. The giant array glowed ominously in the darkness of his lab.

"So, Kaorinite," he said, "have you located the next target?"

"Yes." Kaorinite replied. "I know you'll be pleased this time."

"Ah, but are you absolutely sure?" Tomo asked.

"Yes Dr. Tomo, I'm quite sure." Said Kaori. "Our next victim possesses the purest heart we've ever come across. I'm confident her Pure Heart Crystal will have the powers we need."

Dr. Tomo was pleased, and chose his finest Daimon specimen. He poured it into a beaker, and the ovum was bombarded with white bubbles until it burst the beaker apart.

"You're the only one I can trust with this, loyal Kaorinite." He said. Kaorinite went on her way.

"Da dad'la!" Serena cheered. "I have a special announcement! Today's June 30th! It's my birthday! So let's party!"

"Oh?" Raye said. "Happy birthday." She went back to studying her book.

"Many happy returns." Lita said, studying her book.

"I didn't know when your birthday was, but I guess I do now." Mina said.

"Let's see how well you can act your new age on this day of days." Amy added.

The girls got up to leave, but Serena wanted to do something celebratory. The girls had to start studying, and went to Raye's. Serena cried, feeling like the cruelest thing had just been done to her.

Serena decided to go window shopping to lift her spirits. Kaori watched from an alley as Serena adored a pair of glass shoes. Since the handsome prince got Cinderella her glass slipper in the fairy tale, Serena reasoned that her prince should get the glass shoes for her. She met up with Darien at a phone booth. She almost tore off his arm, holding onto him.

"I'm glad I found you, Darien." Serena said, smiling. "I've been looking all over for you."

"Really?" Darien said, getting nervous. "How come?"

"How come?" Serena repeated, giggling. Isn't that cute? She thought. He's teasing me! He's so fine. Who needs my nasty friends when I have him? She looked up at Darien blushing, which startled him. "Hey Darien," she said, "I've found the perfect gift for you to give me! Come on! If my handsome prince gives me anything at all, then above everything else, it should be a glass shoe. They're at the glass art shop at the corner of Third and Main!"

Serena pleaded with Darien to buy her the glass shoes. As she pulled Darien towards the store, Kaorinite was in a phonebooth across the street.

"Well, I knew she'd covet those silly shoes." She said, smirking. She disappeared.

"I don't get you, Serena." Darien said. "Christmas is months away."

"I know it's not Christmas time, ya clod!" Serena shouted. "Don't tell me you don't know what today is!" Serena's anger began to mount quickly. Darien tried desperately to save himself.

"Lemme think here..." He said.

"Darien!" Serena exclaimed. She began to cry.

"I was just joking!" Darien said. "How could I possibly forget such an important day?"

Serena's head shot up, with a bright smile across it. "Well, stop teasing me, Darien!" She said.

"Sorry!" Darien said, chuckling. "Of course, it's the anniversary of our first date!"

Suddenly, there was a loud clapping sound, echoing for blocks. Darien's cheek was as red as a beet, because Serena had slapped him hard.

"Wrong again, smart guy!" Serena shouted. "I'm outta here!"

With that, Serena stormed off. Darien looked on confused, with a large crowd gathered in behind him. Serena had run to a park and sat on a bench, crying her eyes out. As she sobbed softly, a hand touched her shoulder.

"Are you alright, Moon Face?" A voice said. Serena turned around to see Amara and Michele.

"Tears don't suit you very well, Serena." Michele said. "Here." She handed Serena a handkerchief to dry her tears with. Serena blew her nose into the cloth. Amara and Michele laughed. Serena told them all about her plight.

"Ah, that's why you're sad." Amara said.

"That's too bad, Serena." Michele added. "Some boyfriends are really insensitive. But, I didn't think Darien was one of them."

"Well, he's not my boyfriend anymore, so it just doesn't matter!" Serena said, trying to be strong.

"You sure?" Amara asked. "If he's available, maybe I'll scoop him up." She was teasing, of course. Serena looked at her shocked. Amara teased Serena a bit, saying Darien was her height, and they both loved motorcycles. Serena shot up, and had to go to study group. Without even saying goodbye, she motored towards Raye's.

Meanwhile, at the temple, Raye was answering a phone call. It was Darien, who was wondering where Serena was. Raye hadn't seen her. Darien was wondering why Serena was mad at him, and Raye screamed at Darien for forgetting her birthday.

"Ah, no wonder she's upset!" Darien said. "Actually, she never told me when her birthday was."

At sunset, an incredibly depressed Serena trudged up the stairs to Raye's home. She stopped at the top of the steps.

"Oh no. I went way too far. I never should have done that." She said to herself, looking at her hand.

She walked to Raye's room, and opened the door with a smile.

"Surprise, Serena!" Shouted four voices. The girls had thrown a surprise party for her. Amy gave her a book containing answers to questions on previous high school exams. "I'll use it now!" Serena said.

"What's the matter with you, Serena?!" Raye said. "Study, study, study, that's all you ever think about! It's your birthday, so let's start having some fun for a change here!"

Mina and Lita cheered, glad for the excuse to blow off studying for a day.

"Fine for today, but tomorrow we'll work harder." Amy said, bringing Mina and Lita back down to Earth. Serena looked at her gift from Amy, still unwrapped, and wished Darien could be there.

Meanwhile, Darien was looking for the glass arts shop. Kaorinite had already arrived, and used the Daimon pod to possess one of the glass shoes. The real clerk was unconscious on the floor behind her, but no one could see. Darien came in and bought the shoes. As he left, Michele and Amara spotted him from a phone booth.

"Hey, that's K..." Michele said before Amara silenced her. They saw Kaorinite come out of the shop behind Darien and then disappear. "So, Kaorinite's on the prowl again."

"Yeah, she's probably got her sights set on Serena." Amara said.

"And she's using Darien to get to her." Michele added.

Serena made a wish and blew out the candles on her cake. The girls cheered, but Serena groaned. Amy wondered what was wrong.

"I sorta kinda slapped Darien in the face." Serena said. The girls were agape with this news. "I couldn't control myself, and I'm sorry I did it, but he made me so mad." Serena said, finding it hard to admit this.

"He made you mad because you thought he forgot your birthday, right?" Raye asked. "But Darien called here earlier and wanted to talk to you. He said he never knew when your birthday was in the first place."

Serena truly felt the fool. She had never told him.

"But we're in love!" She said. "Don't you think he'd be able to sense it, or at least ask me?!"

"Sense it?" Mina said. "He's not psychic."

Lita asked if she knew Darien's birthday by sense. She rattled off Mina and Lita's birthdays.

"I guess I don't know, I'm so bad!" Serena said. The girls just sighed with exasperation. Serena dashed off to find Darien and apologize. Meanwhile, Darien was running through the streets, proud of the new gift he'd gotten for Serena. They found each other quickly, and embraced.

"At last, I've found my princess." He said. "But, I'd better make sure this fits you first."

He fished into the wrapped gift and pulled out a glass shoe. Serena kicked hers off and tried the shoe on. It fit perfectly. Without warning, the shoe started flashing brightly, and flung Darien and Serena backwards. The shoe changed into a Heart Snatcher named Sanoshenta. Darien and Serena looked on in horror. Sanoshenta walked up to Serena, and Serena backed up into a window. Darien tried to save Serena, but was knocked through a fence by Sanoshenta. Sanoshenta stretched its arms and caught Serena's shoulders, then moved closer to the girl. Serena kicked the Heart Snatcher in the stomach several times, but to no avail.

"You asked for it!" Serena said, gripping her brooch. "Moon Cosmic Power!"

Sanoshenta knocked the brooch away before it could do anything. It used its powers to fuse Serena with the window behind her, and Sanoshenta flexed its bicep. Uranus and Neptune descended into an alley nearby, and watched as Serena's Heart Crystal was extracted. It glowed with brightness never seen, and Uranus dashed after it. She didn't make it far, as Neptune had grabbed her arm and pulled her back into the alley.

"Are you okay with this?" Neptune asked. "I mean, if she has the special crystal we're looking for, then we'll never be able to put it back in her body, right?"

"Yes, that's right." Uranus replied, scowling towards Sanoshenta.

"Then without it, it will ultimately mean her death."

Uranus nodded, and turned to watch as Serena's limp body surrendered its Heart Crystal. It floated towards Sanoshenta, but before Sanoshenta could acquire it, a red rose hit its hand, and impaled the glass window. The Heart Crystal went back into Serena's body, and the glass shattered, allowing Serena's body to fall to the ground. Neptune and Uranus looked up to a crane to see Tuxedo Mask.

"What are you supposed to be?" Sanoshenta said.

"A person with a pure heart is precious." Was the reply. "They make light from dark! They are giving and loving, and I protect Pure Hearts from evil!" He jumped down from the crane. As he descended, he threw a volley of roses at Sanoshenta, which formed a circle around it. Then, a pillar of light shot upwards, immobilizing the Heart Snatcher. Tuxedo Mask ran to Serena and tried to wake her. She awoke, and Tuxedo Mask jumped to the top of the building with her. He told her to transform.

"I'd love to, but..." She said, touching her shirt where her brooch used to be. Kaorinite appeared beside Sanoshenta.

"Sanoshenta," she said, "where's the girl?"

"I'm sorry boss, some caped intruder took her away." Sanoshenta replied. Kaori angrily ordered Sanoshenta to find Serena, and then looked down. On the ground was a heart-shaped brooch. She looked at it.

"Could she be?" She wondered. Serena and Tuxedo Mask saw it from above. Tuxedo Mask said they had to leave. Serena wanted to get it, but it was too risky.

"I'm sorry." Serena said.

"I'm the one who should be sorry." Tuxedo Mask said. "I should've seen it coming. I'll do anything to keep your Pure Heart safe within you."

"It's my fault, 'cause I had to have those shoes." Serena said. They leapt across an alley to another building, and were spotted by Sanoshenta. Kaorinite released Sanoshenta after them. Tuxedo Mask and Serena leapt from building to building, and came upon a rooftop door. They went inside and quickly descended the flights of stairs.

"Why don't you just leave me and get out of her?" Serena shouted. Tuxedo Mask refused of course. Sanoshenta saw them descending the spiraling staircase, and leapt down the middle of it. Serena and Tuxedo Mask ran all the way down to the parking lot.

"You can't get away!" Kaori said, appearing before them. "So why don't you just give up? It'll save a lot of time for everyone."

Sanoshenta broke through the door behind them, and they were surrounded. Serena tried to send a comminucation to the others, but Kaorinite smashed her communicator with her hair.

"What a shame." She said. "I guess your friends haven't got any time for you, Sailor Moon."

Serena gasped in complete and total shock. Again, no one saw Uranus and Neptune sitting quietly in the shadows.

"So you won't change your mind, Uranus?" Neptune asked.

"No, I'm sorry, I can't." Uranus replied. "Our mission is to collect three pure hearts with powers. I think she has one of them, and that's too bad. But it's inevitable that we have to make some sacrifice." Uranus' inner conflict was apparant to Neptune, but all she could do was wait.

"Oh no, there's no cake left for the birthday girl!" Mina cried. The cake was all gone, fittingly. The girls all envied Serena for possibly being out with Darien, but suddenly they got a communication from Luna. The girls ran to find Serena.

Meanwhile, Serena and Tuxedo Mask were cornered. He told her to run at the first chance. He jumped out and challenged Kaorinite.

"I'm not the figher, you prom king, look behind you!" Kaorinite laughed. Tuxedo Mask looked and saw Sanoshenta change its arm into a sword. Tuxedo Mask drew his cane, and the two began to sword fight. Serena watched in horror as the two jousted. Tuxedo Mask told Serena to run. With a lot of reluctance, Serena got up and started to dash out.

"And where do we think you're going, birthday girl?" Kaorinite said, descending in front of Serena. Tuxedo Mask was distracted, and Sanoshenta was able to knock him down. Kaorinite pulled something out of concealment. It was Serena's brooch.

"I know it's yours." She said. "But if you can't have it, nor should anyone else."

Serena watched in horror as Kaorinite dropped the brooch to the ground. Serena dove for it, but Kaori stepped upon it.

"Now listen here, little missy." She said. "You'd better surrender your pure heart, or I'll find your friends!"

Serena screamed as Kaorinite began to put more and more pressure on the brooch. Meanwhile, Tuxedo Mask broke Sanoshenta's blade, and ran towards Serena. As he did, Sanoshenta sprayed Tuxedo Mask with glass powder. Tuxedo Mask stopped running, and within seconds, was encased in a hard glass shell. Kaorinite laughed. Uranus tried hard to stay where she was, and Serena hugged Tuxedo Mask's shell as Kaorinite continued to grind her brooch into the ground.
