The story begins at the Tokyo Tower where Hikaru Shidou, Umi Ryuuzaki and Fuu Hououji visit this place for school trip. Somehow, by fate, they meet each other in person and then, a flash of light shines throughout the tower and the girls are teleported to the magical land of Cephiro. According to the Cephironian legends, 3 girls from another world will come as the Legendary Magic Knights and save Cephiro from its way to destruction. Of course, these girls have to struggle very hard in order to become the legendary Magic Knights. Not only they have to use their fighting skills and their magic, they also have to use their wits as well. When they first come to Cephiro, they are first told by Guru Clef that Pricess Emerauld, the pillar of Cephiro who supports this magical land through her prayers, is kidnapped by Sol Zagato. Without the Pillar's support, the tranquility of Cephiro disappears and monsters roam freely. They have to fight their way to defeat Zagato and rescue the Princess. The girls agree (Umi doesn't want to at first, but she accepts her role as a Magic Knight eventually......) and they fight their way to get their swords, their mashins and their magic. Of course Zagato sends his minions to stop them but the girls defeat everyone of them either through fighting or through their persuasion of stop working for Zagato. At the end, the girls get their swords and mashines and defeat Zagato. But that's not the end. After the Magic Knights defeat Zagato, they meet Pricess Emerauld for the first time. It turns out that the pillar is in love with Zagato. However, as the pillar of Cephiro, she cannot divert her attention on other things other than on Cephiro and therefore, she can't fall in love with anyone else. As Princess Emerauld realizes her love for Zagato, she wants to get away from him so that she will forget about him and she locks herself up in a place where nobody knows. But this only makes Emerauld think more about Zagato. Knowing what she can do to Cephiro without her prayers, she summons the Magic Knight to KILL her! Other than the Magic Knights, nobody in Cephiro can harm her in any way. Of course, the girls are taken aback from the pillar's request, but they finally decide to grant Princess Emerauld her wish so she can live with Zagato in the eternal place... The battle causes death fo the people the Magic Knights respect, as well as griefs and regrets to those who survive. What makes this manga worth reading is the way CLAMP clevery manipulated such classic theme and making it a fluent, interesting story, although not too genuine either. They don't only offer action, humor and romance, but also reflections of deep thoughts about various matters. Conflicts between one' own interests and the needs of the society, or between love and obligation, the meaning and value of riendship, the power of strong motivations, all combined to create an entertaining title.
