  • Added Roger Ebert's comment on MH. See the articles page. (This is a column in which Roger Ebert answers questions from readers.) Also, see earlier entries for the links to "Ain't It Cool" relevant pages.
  • According to Daily Variety, MH is projected to make $ 150 million (B.O. gross, not rentals - currently it's at $ 135 million) by the time the theater run in Japan finishes.
  • Ryoko wrote on the ML:

According to a Japanese "Sports" newspaper, Yuukan Fuji, the dubbing will start early next year, and MH will be released next *summer*, and the release in Europe will follow.

  • Merry Christmas! ^_^

  • Ryoko wrote on the ML:

"Mononoke Hime" has recieved the Ishihara Yuujiro Award. Yuujiro ISHIHARA was a famous actor in Japan (a kind of John Wayne?), and this award is to commemorate him. Miyazaki-San also received the "Best Director" award.

  • Ryoko wrote on the ML:

Nihon Record Taishou (Japan Record Award) has chosen [Joe] Hisaishi for the "Best Composer" award, for his work in "Mononoke Hime" (I'm not sure if it's for the entire soundtrack, or the song).

It's a sort of Grammy in Japan, and the Award ceremony will be held on the new year's eve. I don't know if he or Mera-San will perform at the ceremony (which will be televised, of course).

18 Nov 97
  • Mononoke Hime has officially surpassed 10 billion yen and 12 million viewers. See the article, posted by Ryoko on the ML.
15 Nov 97
  • Finally got some new statistics on accesses. These pages have now 'officially' been visited by more than 10,000 people since May! Wow! ^_^

(To put this into perspective, the two popular Japanese sites below have had 10 times as many visitors...)

07 Nov 97
  • Added a link to HKS's Japanese / English Mononoke Yama. Like MOHRI Yasuhide's page, this page is also very popular, and features fan art by HKS and others. See links.
  • Did a very minor update to the FAQ.
  • Also, added two new articles that Ryoko had posted to the ML. Quoting the second (Daily Variety) about the Disney release:

"... Miyazaki has script approval and veto power over all artistic and commercial decisions. "Mononoke" isn't designed for youngsters and could well be tagged with an R. Insiders speculate it will go out via another Disney label or possibly as a Miramax title."

  • According to Yahoo! Entertainment, MH attendance is not quite at 12 million yet. (sigh) It's near enough to round up, it seems.
  • The CNN Interactive article now has a downloadable quicktime clip from the movie!
  • Also, added a small menu to all pages. Look at the top left corner. This should also fix problems some people were having with text being obscured by the background. (Thanks Anthony!)
30 Oct 97
  • According to CNN Interactive, MH attendance has indeed surpassed 12 million!

" [Mononoke Hime] ... has grossed 9.65 billion yen ($80.4 million) since its release on July 12, overtaking the 9.62 billion yen ($80.2 million) record previously held by Steven Spielberg's 'E.T.' "

This of course means that MH is now the No.1 movie of all time in Japan!

(The article also has a 'related link' to these pages, among others. Yay!) ^_^

  • According to an article posted by Ryoko on the ML, MH attendance has surpassed 12 million. This is not yet official, it seems.

17 Oct 97
  • A quote from Ryoko's recent post to the ML:

Three months after its release, MH is still at the top of the Japanese box office. Its rental (the distributor's share of BO revenue) has now surpassed 9 billion yen, the attendance has now surpassed 11 million. (E.T. earned about 9.6 billion yen). MH is expected to become the all-time No.1 movie in Japan by the end of October or the beginning of November.

It seems that Toho is going to keep MH in theaters until early next year (possibly till Feb.).

14 Oct 97
  • Ryoko has informed me that the attendance of MH has officially surpassed 11 million. E.T. numbers are not far away anymore...

  • Replaced the top image on the main page. Source: Anime 101/MH page (see links.)
04 Oct 97
  • Added an article that Ryoko posted on the ML. It seems that the figure of 11 million viewers (that was on the front page) was slightly exaggerated - it's 'only' 10.6 million at this point. Don't believe what you read on a web page! :)
  • Also, two pieces on MH have been aired in the US - one on CBS (Sep 30) and a newer one on CNN (Oct 3)!
  • Ryoko also posted a transcript of the CNN program on the ML!
  • Found a new MH page. See links.
01 Oct 97
  • Updated two question/answers to the FAQ about a possible subtitled release + some new info about where it will be released (as supplied by Ryoko)

  • Added the Hollywood Reporter article that states

"...[Mononoke] will be released in both dubbed and subtitled versions, predicting that older audiences will prefer to see the latter."

Couldn't have said it better ^_^

30 Sep 97
  • Added a question/answer to the FAQ about whether Disney will cut MH
    (as supplied by Ryoko)
