Alternate Worlds: Longing For the Past

Longing for The Past

By: Kelley Gillespie
Okay. This is my first Sailor Moon fanfic I'm posting, so if it sucks don't be too cruel. I chose Hotaru as the main character cause I have never seen any fics about her, so I thought I'd write one. I am not an expert on who had what powers during which form so if I'm a bit off, you know why. This was originally completed July 1998.

Dark. Silent. Lonely. That was her normal life. She sat in her room, all alone in the darkness. She was alone before. She could handle it again. Sure, she had friends. _Had_ friends.

They were gone now. At least, the important ones were. Her violet eyes scanned the room. She eventually looked at a photo of herself with the other 8 senshi, Mamoru, plus the cats and Chibiusa.

~Why couldn't I save them? They didn't deserve to die.~ She thought. ~Hotaru Tomoe, stop it. Don't torture yourself.~ Too late for that. Then, there was a knock at the door. Hotaru turned to see a green haired woman with dark red eyes.

"Hotaru," The woman said.

"Setsuna!" Hotaru said in shock. She hadn't seen her friend in over a month.

"The others are worried about you. You haven't spoken to Chibusa in a week. Rei, Makoto, and Usagi all try to see you, but you dismiss them without another word. Ami and Minako call, but you won't pick up the phone. What's going on?!" Setsuna asked.

"I don't want to talk about it," Hotaru said coldly.

"Hotaru, we all miss you. We all love you," Setsuna said,"We can help you."

"You can't possibly help with this," Hotaru whispered. She turned away.

Then, Setsuna realized what was troubling the dark haired girl. She put a hand on Hotaru's shoulder to comfort her. Hotaru turned to her. "There was nothing you could do, child. You saved Chibiusa's life though. Usagi is very grateful. So is Mamoru. You saved one life," Setsuna said.

"But not three! And Michiru and Haruka deserved to live. It's all my fault! They hate me!" Hotaru cried. She put her head in her hands and sobbed.

"They don't hate you. I'm sure," Sesuna said.

"Leave me alone, please," Hotaru said.

"Fine. But if you need me, I'll be there for you," Setsuna said before leaving,"Sayonara, Hotaru."

Sailor Saturn and the outers were battling an evil demon. It seemed despite the efforts of the outer and inner senshi plus Tuxsedo Kamen, the demon kept going and going.
"Jupiter Oak Evolution!"
"Venus Love and Beauty Shock!"

Nothing. The demon was invincible. Tuxsedo Kamen threw thousands of roses but it did nothing.
"Dead Scream!"
"Mercury Aqua Raphsody!"

The demon laughed and fired a beam to counter the blast. Sailor ChibiMoon tried to get a hit in, but the monstrous demon laughed and shot some daggers at her. Sailor Staurn tried to use her 'Silence Wall' technique, but wasn't quick enough. The daggers slashed at ChibiMoon.

The blood. It was all over her sailor fuku. She fell to the ground and her blood spilled out onto the sidewalk. "ChibiMoon!" Sailor Moon cried. "No!" Tuxsedo Kamen cried in unison.

"You will pay!" Sailor Neptune cried.
"Deep Submerge!"
"World Shaking!"

The demon reversed the attack and sent it back at them. The force was unbearable. It threw Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus into a brick wall. They slammed through it. Several bones were broken in both girls. Blood was all over them. They both looked terrible.

Sailor Saturn could take no more. She clutched her Silence Glaive and ran at the demon. With a quick swish of the blade, the demon was dead. Decapitated.

"Saturn! Help ChibiMoon! Her vitals are dropping. Can you heal her?" Sailor Mercury asked.

"I'll try," Sailor Saturn said.

"Please, Sailor Saturn. Save her," Sailor Moon begged, tears in her eyes.

"I'll do so," she said.

Sailor Saturn touched ChibiMoon. Her hands glowed with a purple light. Suddenly, all the gashes and wounds healed. Sailor ChibiMoon opened her eyes. "Arigato, Hotaru," She said.

Sailor Neptune moaned in pain. "Help me. Help us," She begged. Sailor Saturn ran over.

"Don't worry Michiru-mama. Haruka-papa. I'll heal you," she said.

Sailor Saturn touched Sailor Neptune. Nothing happened. She tried it on Sailor Uranus. Nothing. "No!" Sailor Saturn cried,"I don't have enough energy!"

"Don't worry," Sailor Neptune said.

"We'll be okay," Sailor Uranus said.

"Someone call an ambulance!" Sailor Venus cried desperately.

Mercury called an ambulance. It was too late. By the time they got there, Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus were dead. They had lost too much blood, the doctors said.

"No!!!!!!!" Sailor Saturn screamed.

Hotaru remembered it all. The blood. The sirens in the distance just as Neptune and Uranus went limp and motionless. Colorless as well. She hated the funeral the most. The minister briefly talked about Michiru and Haruka. But otherwise said hardly anything deep or detailed.

"Ashes to ashes. Dust to dust," He said. Oh how Hotaru hated that phrase. It echoed in her head. Angered her deeply. It made her more angry than anything.

To lose Michiru and Haruka was a deep loss to her. At least she still had Chibiusa, her best friend. But Michiru and Haruka raised her after Super Sailor Moon defeated Mistress 9 and Hotaru reverted to baby form. She grew quickly. But that would not have been possible without Michiru and Haruka. They had become so close. Now they were gone.

Would she get over it? No, never. Not in a thousand years.

"Hotaru, darling," Professor Tomoe said,"Time for bed."

"Hai otaa-sama," Hotaru said. Professor Tomoe kissed his daughter good night. Then, he left her to get ready for bed.

Hotaru put on her nightgown and fell asleep.

Hotaru ran through an endless foggy maze. ~Where am I? Where is the way out?~ Hotaru thought. Suddenly, Hotaru saw a light. She ran towards it. She saw two figures walking up ahead of her. "Hey wait! I need help! Do you know the way out?" She cried. The figures turned to face her. She recognized them.

"Haruka! Michiru!" Hotaru said in shock. "I thought you were dead," She said, now confused as to what was going on.

"We are dead," Haruka said.

"And it's your fault!" Michiru exclaimed.

"I tried to save you!" Hotaru cried.

"But you didn't. I don't believe you really tried," Haruka said.

Hotaru began to cry. She never felt so horrible in all her life. "But I didn't have enough energy to do it," Hotaru said.

"You let us die Hotaru. Now you will die," Michiru said calmly.

Haruka transformed into Sailor Uranus and made her space sword appear. She raised it in the air. "Goodbye," She said solemnly.

"No!" Hotaru cried, the scream seems to echo endlessly.....

Hotaru sat bolt upright in bed. Her night gown was wet with sweat. "They do hate me," She thought aloud. She had to get away. Hotaru got out of bed and snuck outside. She ran and ran until she was at the beach.

"Michiru....Haruka....I'm so sorry!" She cried, putting her haed in her hands as she sobbed.

"Hotaru..."

Hotaru looked around. She saw no one. But she could swear she heard someone call her name....

"Hotaru..."

There it was again! An elegant woman's voice. Wait..... It seemed so familiar. Could it be? No. Michiru was dead. So was Haruka. But that woman did sound a lot like her.

"If only I could have helped!" Hotaru shrieked. She continued to sob.

"Oh Hotaru," A voice said.

Hotaru turned and was face to face with Michiru Kaioh.

"Michiru!" Hotaru exclaimed.

"Michiru, what is wrong with our little Hotaru-chan?" Haruka asked, joining Michiru.

"But this is impossible! You're dead," Hotaru said in confusion.

"Hotaru, bodies die but souls live on forever. We have been watching you. And we don't like what we see," Michiru said.

"You are so unhappy and it deeply saddens us," Haruka said.

"Aren't you going to blame me for letting you die? It's my fault you are dead. It's all my fault. If only I had more energy..." Hotaru said.

"See what you are doing to yourself? You are putting so much guilt on yourself that you don't even realize that there was nothing you could do. It's not your fault Hotaru," Michiru said.

Hotaru wiped the tears away from her eyes. "You mean.... You don't blame me?" She asked.

"Of course not. We know you tried to help. That is what matters," Haruka said.

"So please Hotaru, go and enjoy life again," Michiru said.

"We will always be with you," Haruka said.

Then, the two disappeared as quickly as they had appeared. There had almost been no evidence of the encounter except for the two other sets of footprints on the sand and Hotaru's renewed hope.

Later that week, Chibiusa and Hotaru were spending time together once more. Everyone was happy that Hotaru was herself again.

"So Hotaru, what finally knocked some happiness into you?" Chibiusa asked.

"I guess you could say that an angel or two showed me the truth," Hotaru said.
