Whoever thought a demon could love and lose? Enon wrote on the piece of paper with her small fountain pen. She was writing her newest poem, but had no idea what to title it. Infact she couldn't even think of what to write on the next line. She sighed, thinking of the subject of her poem, the one she had infact, loved and lost. It pained her to think of him, his long curly black hair, his deep dark eyes, his strong arms which had embraced her, holding her close to his body. Her vision blurred as the warm, wet symbols of her sorrow came to her eyes.
"No. I can't cry. The darkness can't cry," Enon said, but the tears spilled down her face anyway. She was crying. It had been nearly 400 years since she'd cried, since that one day that changed her forever....
It was the year 1675. Enon walked the earth in a human looking form, under the name Elissa Hearting. She looked nothing like her normal self as Elissa. As Elissa she had short, straight blood red hair and long bangs. Her eyes were a piercing shade of emerald green. Everyone was hyped up about witches and the dark arts in the town of Salem, Massachusetts. Enon thought it was silly. They were so afraid of witches when the town's greatest herbalist was a demon, the maiden of darkness.
Elissa was closing up her shop, eager to return to her home. She couldn't wait to see her love. She felt giddy, which was odd considering what she was. She didn't care. All that mattered was him.
Walking quickly down the streets of Salem, various people stopped her.
"Elissa! Elissa!" A voice called.
Enon turned to see Rosaline Goodhue, the mother of a child she'd treated with her herbs only a week ago.
"Hello Mrs. Goodhue. Is John doing well?" Elissa asked.
"Oh it's a miracle! Your herbs saved him Elissa. He made a total recovery. It was like he was never ill! A thousand thank you's for what you've done for my family," Mrs. Goodhue said.
"Anytime Mrs. Goodhue. Come by the shop if you ever need my assistance again," Elissa said.
"Certainly. Thank you so much Elissa," Mrs. Goodhue said.
Enon was happy to get away from her. She practically ran the rest of the way home, where her love waited for her outside the door.
"Welcome home.... Elissa," He said, smiling.
"Oh Alex, I thought I'd never get out of there. I missed you so much," Elissa said, throwing herself into his arms.
"I know, I missed you too," Alex said as he shut the door,"Enon, my love."
Enon smiled when Alex said her true name. He was the only one who knew of her true nature. She'd never forget what he said when she'd revealed the truth to him, on one fateful day 5 years ago.
"I must show you something. I want you to know everything about me Alex. I love you and I don't want any secrets between us." She'd said to him.
"Nothing could change my love for you," He'd said to her. He'd meant it too; even though her sudden change from a simple girl with red hair and green eyes to a lovely demon with long dark brown hair, blood red eyes, and large black gargoyle-like wings took his breath away, he still did not turn away from her.
"I'm a demon Alex, the maiden of darkness, does that change your love for me or the way you see me?" Enon had asked.
"I told you nothing could change my love for you, and as hard as it is to believe, you've only gotten even more gorgeous than before," He'd replied. They were the sweetest words she'd ever heard.
Of course, Alex and Enon couldn't let the news of who she really was get out. Alex always had to call Enon by her alias Elissa, unless they were most definitely alone.
"Should we begin your lesson?" Enon asked Alex, as her red hair grew longer and turned dark brown and her green eyes turned red. Her large black wings grew from her back and unfolded around her body.
Alex shook his head. "No. Not yet," Alex said. He drew Enon into his arms and kissed her passionately. Enon put her arms around his neck and kissed him back. Alex picked her up and carried her into their room, to show him the extent of their love. Needless to say,the lesson was forgotten that night.
Sometime the next day, Elissa sat in her herb shop, filling a simple order for a customer when she heard a lot of commotion outside. Curious, Elissa snuck outside and stopped a person in the street.
"Excuse me miss, what's going on?" She asked the townsperson.
"Rumor has it that Alex Dorring made a girl vanish into thin air. No one knows what happened to her. They suspect he's a warlock," The girl said.
Oh no! No! Not Alex! Elissa thought. "Where is he?"
Elissa asked.
"They took him down to the old jailhouse," The girl replied.
"Thank you," Elissa said. She quickly ran back to her herb shop. "Sorry everyone! Store's closed. It's an emergency! Come back tomorrow!" She shouted, as she made everyone leave so she could lock up.
Elissa ran down to the jail. Her heart was pounding. There was no way that Alex could have the power to make someone just vanish. No way in hell. He was no where near that level of power. Why would hedo such a thing anyway? Alex was always so sweet and gentle. The only reason Enon was as good to humans as she was was due to Alex. She was wicked until she met him. A horrid demon causing random acts of destruction for entertainment. Alex changed her completely. He gave her a new appreciation for humanity. Without him, she really didn't care.
She ran inside the building, desperate to get to the bottom of the situation.
"Where do you think you are going?" The gaurd said.
"I need to see Alex Dorring!" Elissa cried.
"Sorry miss. He can't have visitors," the gaurd said.
"It's urgent! I need to see him!" Elissa cried.
"No! Go home young lady," The gaurd said.
Elissa pretended to give in and walked out the door. Little did they know that as soon as she left, she teleported to her love's cell.
Alex leapt in surprise when he saw her. "Enon!" He said, excitedly.
"Shh. Be quiet, my love. I heard all about what happened. The gaurd wouldn't let me see you, so I had to teleport here. Why are they holding you prisoner? I know you did nothing wrong," Elissa said.
"Enon, it's awful. They think I made this girl disappear. I didn't. She could teleport like you and she just vanished after I spoke to her. They assumed I made her vanish and they searched my things and found my book on black magic. Enon..." Alex said sadly, looking into her eyes,"They want to sentence me to death."
"NO!!!!!!!I won't let that happen! I won't let them do it! I will prove you innocent!" Elissa said.
"The trial is tomorrow. Incase I am sentenced to death, can I at least see the real you one last time?" Alex asked.
"Alex, don't talk like that. I can get you out of this!"
"Just do it!" Alex insisted, glaring at Enon.
"Fine," Enon said, caving in to him. Her human appearance melted away, revealing the true demoness she was. She looked at Alex.
He smiled. "Thank you," was all he said. Enon threw herself into his arms and gripped him tightly to her body. She could not lose him. He was the only human she cared about. To hell with the other mortals, only Alex mattered to her.
"I swear I'll save you," She said.
"You can't do this! He's innocent! He couldn't have made that young woman disappear! What you are accusing him of is proposterous!" Elissa cried to the high official. She was determined to save Alex's life, no matter what the cost may be.
"We have evidence Mrs. Hearting. We found a black magic spell book on his person when we took him in. There is no question that Alex Dorring is a student of the black arts," The high official said.
"He's an innocent man. He's so sweet and caring to others... How can you not consider his feelings for others in sentence!" Elissa shouted. "I will not stand for this persecution of an innocent man!"
"Mrs. Hearting, I am well aware of your relationship with Mr. Dorring. I know you would tell me any lie to save his life, that is why I simply cannot believe you," The high official said.
Enon could not believe it. These humans were dead serious about executing the one she loved.
"I also realize you will do anything to save him so," The high official said, signaling his gaurds,"I am preventing you from trying anything at the hanging today."
The gaurds grabbed Elissa. "No! Let me go! You can't do this! You can't!!!" She cried. The gaurds dragged her past Alex, who was being held by two other gaurds.
Alex gazed sorrowfully at Elissa. "It's okay Elissa. You tried. Thank you so much for loving me..." He said.
Elissa's vision became blurry. What was this feeling she felt? Why was this salty tasting water pouring from her eyes and down her face? Was this what humans called crying? Demons were not supposed to cry....
Elissa watched painfully as the gaurds dragged Alex up to the podium where the noose awaited him. She could not believe what was happening. "You will live to regret this!" She shrieked, but only the high official heard her. There was a large and very loud crowd to witness the supposed warlock's demise. It was sickening, knowing that this was entertainment for them.
The most painful thing for Enon was they didn't even read him the last rites of passage. They claimed he didn't deserve for following in the steps of evil.
Alex gazed at Elissa one last time and mouthed the words "I love you Enon," which only made her cry harder. The trap door was pulled and Alex fell, the noose tightening around his neck. Elissa screamed as though she'd been mortally wounded. Alex struggled for only a brief moment, then ceased movement. She sobbed painfully, her body shaking violently as she let out all her pain.
"So it is done. This vile, disgustingly evil soul is banished back to hell where he belongs, never to torment an innocent person again," The reverend spoke to the crowd.
Cheers came from the people in the crowd. Instantly, Elissa felt her tears vanish. HOW DARE THEY!!!!How dare they cheer for the suffering of another! Humans are true filth and they must be punished!!!Only hate remained within her and at that moment she realized what she had to do.
Her eyes blazed with fury. Elissa screamed and a black forcefield surrounded her, sending the gaurds who had held her reeling backwards. All eyes turned to her in astonishment. The reverend stepped back in fear.
"I told you I would not stand for this. You have killed the only man I have ever loved over a crime I know he was innocent of. He did have power, but not that much. Not enough to make someone vanish!" Elissa cried.
"How would you know anyway?" Someone asked.
Elissa grinned wickedly. "Because it was I who trained him! I'm the maiden of darkness! I am your witch! Now I will not forgive a single one of you!" She shouted.
Elissa summoned her dark powers and started to set fire to people's houses, as well as people in general. She laughed psychotically as her ribbons of shadows wrapped around the pathetic humans and choked them to death. She swung one around the neck of the high official and strangled him with her power.
"Now you will know what you sentenced him to! You will die just as he did!" Elissa shouted. As the high official started to cease moving she laughed harder. It is okay Alex, you are avenged, Elissa thought.
Suddenly, the reverend ran up to Enon and splashed holy water on her face, temporarily blinding her. She cried out, then was hit hard in the face. She saw only darkness.
When Enon finally awoke, she was tied to a pole and bunched of sticks and hay were around her. At first she didn't quite understand what was going on then she heard the chants.
"Burn the witch! Burn the witch!"
Enon snapped back into reality. Her eyes flew open. They wanted to burn her at the stake! She felt scared for a moment. Then the thought dawned on her. She could fake her death. Why not, afterall. She saw no point in sticking around in the mortal world. Her beloved Alex was dead. What was the point in staying in a world she despised without her one true love? She knew what she would do. It wouldn't be easy, but she could pull it off.
"Now this vile being will join her evil mate in the darkest depths of hell where they belong to burn in the eternal fire of.." The reverend began.
"Oh shut up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Enon cried. The crowd gasped. The reverend turned beet red.
"Well... You get the idea.....Gentlemen," The high official said, calling forth three gaurds holding torches. He grinned wickedly at her. She hadn't killed him after all--unfortunately.
"Elissa Hearting, the colony of Salem Massachusetts finds you guilty of witchcraft. Burn in hell!" The high official said.
The crowd cheered as the gaurd lit the pile of sticks around the stake.
But Enon was smart. She had a plan. Concentrating hard, she made an illusion of Elissa Hearting tied to the stake. She then freed herself and teleported to her house, where she put a cloak around herself and returned to the street to watch her phony execution.
Her illusion was very believeable and everyone assumed Elissa Hearting had been consumed by the fire. As the crowd began to depart, she heard some people talking about her.
"Such a shame. She and Alex seemed like nice people."
"Yeah I know. I was surprised myself. Especially when I heard he made a girl vanish into thin air!"
"I know. Did you hear that all that was left behind when the girl vanshed was a snow white feather?"
WHAT!!! Enon thought. Now this conversation had her full attention. She knew now that it was not just an ordinary girl that vanished, but a teleporting angel.
Enon was outraged. Those angels! Not only do they think they are better than everyone, but it's their fault! It's their fault that Alex is dead! She thought. Enon was too overcome with grief. After checking to see no one was looking, she teleported back to her own world.
That's when she resigned back to the demon world. She was forever changed. She was colder, acerbic, even. She never again got close to anyone. But then the angels came on earth again, and she had to be there for it.
Enon stood up, leaving her poem on the desk in her apartment. Her appearance changed to that of a young girl with purple hair styled into two pigtails and two front sections which were pink. In her new form, she'd already chosen a name- Angel Eden. No one would ever suspect a girl with a name like that could be a demon, she'd reasoned.
She was dressed in the uniform she was required to wear to St.Mary's School for Girls. She made some improvements though. She ditched the stupid knee high socks and wore fishnets instead. Truthfully, Enon didn't need to go to school. She was just doing it as a cover to find the Angels. Enon was determined to find them too.
"Alex, I swear I will find the one who caused you to die such a painful death." Enon vowed.
