Magic Light and Dark

Final Fantasy worlds have always divided magic into at least two categories. Black magic is the magic of elemental forces and destructive powers, while white magic uses the powers of life and protection. Other types of magic have included time magic, oracle magic, and blue magic. For simplicity's sake, I recommend narrowing the field to black magic, white magic, and time magic, which manipulates time and space.

The dichotomy between black and white magic in particular may seem superfluous in the face of the cleric/wizard distinction, but there are a few important differences in their relationship. White and black magic are both arcane magic, practiced by people with the same inclinations toward scholarly and magical power rather than faith. True clerics are exceedingly rare in Final Fantasy settings.

Wizardry and Sorcery

Much as standard wizards and sorcerers use the same spell list, a character who practices white, black or time magic may do so as either a wizard or a sorcerer, representing the same contrast between careful study and intuitive power. This results in the creation of six classes for these worlds; the white wizard, black wizard, time wizard, white sorcerer, black sorcerer and time sorcerer.

These classes are all standard classes; they can be taken by a first-level character, and can multiclass freely with other classes and with each other. They retain all the standard class features of the wizard and sorcerer classes described in the Player's Handbook; that is, they differ from these classes only in their spell lists.
