S.S. : Just read your message. You mentioned about our meeting with Ng Kam Ha while you are in Hong kong. The nice gentleman in complete white hair is Mr. Yim  Siu Yuen. I just get a message from Ivon Choi that me and Lawrence Wong will meet Shirley Lam and May W.S.Mei in Bangkok on 5th. Oct. before these 2 ladies arrive Hong Kong. I will try to arrange Ng Kam Ha to meet them and hopefully Mr. and Mrs. Yim will be persuated to join the reunion.

Good news --- I just get the address of the Lighter's MOON (C27).Please go to Private page for detail.

Report of Hong Kong Trip

S.S. Lau

9/8/98

This lighter went to HK for about 10 days in the recent past, here is my report on our home town:

(1) the new airport---it is big and nice, in fact nicer and more Modern than a lot of international airports in some of the major cities in the world. To get in and out is quite a different matter. If you stay in a hotel on the Kowloon side, take bus A21, it will get you near the hotel and you can walk there ( $33 HKD one way with air conditioning), or you can take the express way ( train ) and get off at the HK or KL station, they bus you to the hotel, or you go to exit B, booth #3 and book a shuttle bus to your hotel ( $120 HKD one way, or $190 HK round trip) or you take a taxi ( about $260-280 HKD). The problem really is that there is hardly any business in all those nice duty free shops, a far cry form the good old days at the old airport. I don't see how these shops can survive for long.

(2) The economy is going down the tube, everyone is complaining. Mr. Tung, HK CEO, is on the receiving end of some very negative comments from people on the bus, on the subway, in the taxi anywhere you see people they have some bad things to say about Mr. Tung. I think it is not his fault at all.

(3) The HK government is cutting 37% from the higher education budget spread over in 3 three years.

(4) The HK government used 9 billions USD to firm up the HK stock market ( a nasty US mutual fund went to HK and tried to sell short on HK future index---what a mess). (9E9 USD is about 10% of HK foreign reserves. At this moment, the HK government is hold ing a lot of stock. Let us hope the Heng sang index creeps up in time.

(5) The Iighters in HK are doing okay. Business is not at its best, but the lighters are holding up and having fun regularly and often.

(6) Hyman Luk graduated from college and is helping out his father on a number of business matters. I was pleased to see him grown into a nice young man, being his legal guardian during his high school days in California.

(7) Leung Kun is retired and spending in HK until late October before returning to Canada. He is collects paintings these days. He wants to join the reunion and will fax Gina when he returns to Canada in October.

(8) Leung Kun went to school for three days to learn about retirement life. Tse Shun- Kai and Leung Kun gave CC Luk and me a lecture on retirement ---we need to have a rebirth in retirement. Perhaps, we need to have a special lecture on this subject at the reunion.

(9) Leung Kun also requests a lecture on the use of e-mail at the reunion. I think Peter Tong can easily be the lecturer for that.

(10) Kevin Tse ( son of Tse shun-kai) graduated in modern music in Boston ( Summa cum laude). He is following the fine tradition of his artistic father.

(11) Met Ng Kum-Ha ( C24) and her husband Yim Siu-Yun. They run a chemical business together. Their son is going to Harvard graduate school in medical sciences. Now what is interesting is that Mr. Yiu saw the MOON in Fuda ( a city in Germany ) about 10 years ago. The moon was/is married to Mr. Leung ( Sharp share), and she was looking for schools for their kids in England. So the Moon has been traced. We need to get a Sharp share guy to find out Mr. Leung's current address.

Comments

Enjoyed your comments on the world wide search of the three major objects in the sky. You mentioned about a small get together with some other classmates who suggested that we dropped the talk on the you-know-what so not to offend some female Lighters.
Ng, Kam Sik

Actually I think the search and the possible appearance at the reunion of these three subjects is the best selling point of the reunion.

The search helps to arouse the interest of some yet to decide Lighters to attend this memorable fortieth reunion, it also helps to bring back memory of the old school days.

As long as we don't get too curious into some potential personal matters, its a fun subject and can be turned into the main attraction of the reunion ( provided that they are found and are up to the tasks)

So much from one person's opinion on the search. By the way, where did you guys meet ?

Any one wants to start the next subject in our e-mail discussion on Greek history ?

Dennis Su (F34 Tsui, Tze King)

Muk Tao

I met Teddy Tsieh at Patrick Wong's place on Aug. 9th. Other than us, there were Chiu Chung Woo, Cheng Won Chou, Tony Kwok, William Kao, Mok Yue Wah, and Peter Tong. We had a good time and a very long gathering. Patrick looks good and he said, "he feels good also", but still confine to a wheelchair. The most inconvenient part is his natural duty calls, they usually take 4-5 hours a day because they have to be done by gravity. Teddy Tsieh is verbally commited that he will join our reunion next year. His address and phone # are in our website, go after him in case he might "Sock Sha".

Reunion

7/22/98

Just come back from Europe to See Sonia ( CCLuk's daughter) and her graduation in BATH ( Sonia was a student in architecture at the niversity of Bath--- a more recently established , but good university). I visited Yook-Fung Zai and enjoyed very much of the Hospitality of mr. & Mrs. Zai while the 3 of us were in Belgium ( this is indeed the case for many of us who have visited the Zais in Belgium).

The following lighters also met in LONDON:

   Zai Yook-Fung (D33) Lam Fat-Yau (A3) Leung Nai-Sum(A22) Luk Chi-Chung (D19)

We Talk about the renuion in 1999. When I came back to my office in H.K.. There is a lot of faxed e-mail on my desk. After reading them and phoning  the lighters in H.K. I can give you some of their responses:

Lam fat-Yau -----Interested to come But not sure whether he can find some one to replace his work in the restaurant. He needs some pushing.  Lighter of his class should phone to him.  The phone No. of his shop in Tonbridge London  is 44-1732-358-931.

Leung Nai-Sum-----Will Join REUNION on Aug.05,06,&07. (I will send a cheque  for him C$100)  He may Join PRE-REUNION but have no time  to join POST-REUNION.

Tse Shun-Kai-----His computer was shut down for the pass 2 weeks. He will  answer you direct ly ( I don't know who this "you" is, Tse should reply to Gina directly and not to anyone else) .

Leung Kwun-----He is now in H.K.. He donot know whether he is available in  Aug 98. He will answer Gina 2 months later. ( BETTER LATE THAN NEVER)

Tse Kong-Fong-----He is too busy. He cannot join the reunion in Toronto.

  Wong Giles(D2)-----Same

Lui Kwok-Chi-----He will not come to the reunion.

Comments from S.S. Lau

This 40th year union comes once in our life time, and then it will be gone forever and never to return. There is not much in life at this stage that we cannot drop for a few days and enjoy the company of the Lighters after 40 years. What is there in life that we must do just during those few days in August 1999 instead of coming to the reunion. How can we be too busy to attend and not give due consideration to the significance of this event.

Is it that we still hold a grudge against some people that we don't want o see after 40 years? There must be someone we want to see among the Lighters.

Just consider the effort Gina and the Toronto Lighters put into this event, are we not touched by the generosity of the time devoted and the tireless organizational work put into the reunion. Let us all meet in Toronto in August 1999.

Reunion

Dear Lighters;

Reacting to Desmond's message, I would like to suggest to the fellow Lighters that we need to start calling our friends to join the re-reunion. We are Lighters and we have the responsibility to make the re-union a success. This is not a re-union for SS Lau, not a re-union for Choi Yip Keung (that is me, Ivan Choi), it is for all of us. I would not feel it is a re-union if I don't see all of us on that day.

So please, pick up the phone and call the lighter friends in your area and check if they know about the re-union. Tell them we want to see them at the union. You may be surprised that you friend may not know about the re-union for some reasons. At the same time please sign up and join the reunion. This can be a one of your life time best experiences.

Ivan Choi

Reunion  News

7/16/98

Dear Lighters;

Some years ago, perhaps, in the early 60s or late 50s, I saw a movie entitled " On the Beach " starring Ava Gardner and Gregory Peck. It was about the effects of a thermo-nuclear war on people. The only place on earth safe from the atomic fallout was Australia. Peck was in the Navy and was sailing for Australia in a submarine before the explosion, and Gardner was just there in Australia. Of course, these two met and fell for each other. It turned out that as the atomic radioactive dust was carried over the Pacific, even Australia would be doomed eventually and it was predicated that Australia only had so many days left before the entire population would be eliminax kmscheng@popd.netcom.ca ted on the face of the earth.

I remember the last scene of the movie where Peck and Gardner met on an Australian beach. They held on to each other, counting the days they had to live and to be together.

Peck said to Gardner " there is still time for us".
Gardner said " yes, but very little left".
The camera then zoomed out slowly with the Australian national song "waltzing Matilda's " playing softly in the background. I can still hear the tune in my head at this moment. It has lasting effect.

For us, dear lighters, if you have not signed up for the reunion, please do so immediately. There is still time, yet very little left. We still have a few days of window of opportunity without a price increase due to contract issues with the hotel, cruise etc.

We have about 140 surviving lighter, it seems less than 40 signed up ( more were added to the list as the replies came in thru the mail). That is less than 30 %. Do we not want to meet and "Ma" each other ? Just to get that off your chest after 40 years.

Lighters, sign up, show up and let us have another "twilight" game. Perhaps, we can convince the girls to join in. Wouldn't that be cool? Ha! Ha !

Use e-mail to reply to Gina, followed by fax or postal mail with credit card number if you are concerned about the security.

There is still Time, yet so little left.---SSL

Total 34 Persons committed (Including Spouses).

Although August 1999 seems to be very far away,We have to make all the arrangements well in advance because of the size of the group and August is a peak tourist season.

The Lake Ontario cruise, Restaurant, deerhurst resort as well as the tour company handles the Greek/Turkey Cruise all require deposit to honour the prices quoted. Without firm committment it is difficult for the planing committee to make any sort of advance arrangement to keep the cost reasonable.

Please send in your reply as soon as possible.

July 9, 1998

First of all, on behalf of WuYin, my wife and myself, we would like to thank all "OLD" classmates for their generosity and hospitality while we were visiting San Francisco and LA. It's a trip of our life time. It was a great thrill for both of us to be able to meet so many classmates that we haven't seen for 40 years! We are glad that all of you haven't changed much except just a little bit older like us!
Our journey took us from Vancouver to San Francisco in two days. We arrived at Moraga on Sunday night and thanks to the kindness and hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Chan Man-Duen. they let us share their beautiful home for a few days. Chan Man-Duen was kind enough to take a day off to give a guided tour of SF on Monday. In the evening, we met up with Tony Kwok for a dinner near China Town. After dinner, we took a strode along Broadway and stopped for coffee. It's been a wonderful day!
Also thanks to David Lin's hospitality, we took a side trip to Lake Tahoe and stayed in his "cabin" for a couple of days. We took a drive up to Reno and each of us deposited US$5 each. (big gambler!) At night we were trying to re-coup our loses, we further deposited US$10 each at Lake Tahoe!! When we returned to SF, Mr. & Mrs. Lin and family took us to Monterey for a visit of the aquarium followed by a dinner by the sea. We can't thank them enough for all their generosity and hospitalities.
On Friday we arrived at LA in the afternoon and made contact with Shirley Lam. Through her kindness and tireless efforts, she managed to "round up" all available old classmates for a Chinese dinner at Monterey Park. The seafood dinner was sumptuous and delicious. In attendance with WuYin and my wife were:
Shirley Lam ;Mr. & Mrs. Louie, Ying-Kit; Sophie Lo; Tsui, Yen-Woo; Wong, Hing-Chung ; Lu, Yuen-Chuen; Mr. & Mrs. Chiu, Sung-Kwong;Chen, Pang
With WuYin around, there is never a dull moment. We had a lively dinner and
lots of good laughs. Too bad we had such a short time gather together. WuYin is currently stayed behind in LA with his brother. If anyone interested, his brother's name is Peter and the phone number is (626) 282-1895.
WuYin is planning to write his memoir in Chinese (Sai Yue Kee) and I'm sure
it will be much more colorful than my short version of our travel. Once again, thank you all very much and hope to see next year in Toronto! If you come by Vancouver next time, please call.
Regards,

Ivan Kan (Po-Chung) and WuYin (in his absence)
