How Kanazawa got its name.. Once upon a time, a farmer bought his harvested potatoes to a spring to wash off the dirt. According to local legend, as he was doing so, he discovered gold glistening in the water. The name ‘Kanazawa’ or ‘Golden Spring’ grew from this folktale.

It is only natural then, that gold should play such an important role or part in the cultural identity of this Ishikawa Prefecture. Gold leaf production in Kanazawa began under the first feudal lord, Toshiie Maeda in 1953. Over the centuries, Kanazawa has become the center of gold-leafing in Japan and now produces 99% of the industry’s product.

From ancient times, metal leafing has been an important medium for decorating structures and enhancing traditional arts and crafts in Japan. Gold is believed to be the most beautiful of all colors and is traditionally used on special ceremonial occasions.
