As a result of the tsunami, underground pipes were burst and the supply of clean drinking water was disrupted. Even before the tsunami, Tamil Nadu has been chronically plagued by a shortage of water, and the tsunami has made the situation critical.

The TOS immediately arranged to acquire three reverse osmosis plants, with a capacity of 1,000 litres per hour [20,000 litres per day] to meet the urgent needs of thousands of affected people.

The reverse osmosis plant started operation as soon as it was acquired.
Families needing fresh water queued for hours outside the plants every day during the relief efforts.

Small children were also roped in to help.
During the function on 10 March 2005, Mr. N.K. Ranganath (on right), CEO of Grundfos Pumps, handed over a letter donating the pumps for the project. Mr. S. Harihara Raghavan, Secretary, TOS, Chennai, received the letter on behalf of the TOS.
Mrs. Radha Burnier, International President of the Theosophical Society, then handed over the operations and maintenance contract to Mrs. Bhooma Parthasarathy of the Thirumalai Charity Trust.
