Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs
AKA 'Bismark and the Star Sheriffs' in Japan
Intro
I remember watching and loving the unique cartoon Saber Rider when I
was younger. It and this other cartoon called Danger Mouse were the only
cartoons that played on this channel that showed shows from other countries.
The animation level for that time was truly impressive, and the parallels
to Voltron (which I didn't recognize at the time) only made it cooler.
The characters for this show were beautiful (For the 80s)! It was an
introduction to my love for anime today.
What is this about?
Star sheriffs are the guardians of the New Frontier (space). They battle
the Outriders from the Vapor zone.
Since the bad guys are made of vapor, when they die they just evaporate
and go back to their own dimension. Yes, this means that hundreds of bad
guys die in each episode! It's the most fun I had from a childhood cartoon!
Plus, at the end there usually is a giant robot battle scene... watch
it and you'll see. It's not as bad as Power Rangers, though.
Who are these guys?
-
Saber Rider: The "Top Sword" or leader of the Star Sheriffs. He is British,
a swordsman, has a biomechanical horse, and a strict leaderly personality.
-
Fireball: The hotheaded Japanese race car driver.
I heard he was the main character in Japan, but that seems not right with
Saber Rider and Colt around. He's the coolest looking though (His helmet
isn't too high or shaped as a cowboy's)
-
Colt: The cowboy. Actually I found him annoying and
liked him the least. It surprised me to hear that when the anime was brought
over, the Americans tried to make him the main character through dialogue
manipulation. I heard some funny stories about Colt courting April when
it looked like Fireball was talking.
-
April Eagle: She was the cutest cartoon character
at the time. Her normal clothes are ugly, but she looks hecka cool in her
armor! Man I wish that they made action figures for that series... Voltron
too.
-
Commander Eagle: April's Father. He dissapears for many episodes. His voice
actor is Peter cullen (Optimus Prime) I think.
-
Ramrod: The spaceship used to combat the Outriders. He has an alternate
form though.
-
Nemesis: The boss... he appear cybernetic.
-
Jesse Blue: He's cool. The human who betrayed humanity for love. Guy kinda
reminds me of Prince Lotor from Voltron.
-
Varous Outrider bosses: They appear, and are defeated

Review
Episodes
I've only seen "Star Sheriff Roundup" and "The Challenge" recently,
but "The Challenge" appears to be a review episode. Most of it is clips
from other episodes! Still, it is characteristic of anime. Also, anyone
else want to see Saber Rider throw his sword, pick it up, slash the next
guy in a more unique way? How much were cels in those days anyway?
