Anime FAQ
A Beginner's Guide

Welcome, sit back and let the Cruel Angel guide you through the basics in Anime. Hopefuly this will help out beginners in anime, or those who just haven't watched that much anime yet.

Anime Vocabulary Vocabulary is important, I advise you to skim through the terms if you haven't done so already.

OAV/OVA/Movies/TV series, What's the difference?

I suppose this is the most common question that I've seen. First, OAV = OVA, which stands for original anime on video or something like that. The following chart represents what each are individually like.
Type  Animation Quality  Character Development  Pithy  Form of display
OAV/OVA  High  Less than in TV series  Very  Released directly to tape only.
TV series  Ok, not great  Greater potential  Not usually  Broadcasted on TV
Movies  Usually high  Almost never  Very  In Movie theaters.

Shoujo, Shonen, Hentai, there are categories in Anime?

Yup. There are actually a lot of categories, including one just about male homosexuality. My vocab list has them listed, but this is what they briefly mean:

What's with all the nudity?

I've actually heard people call Japanese perverts simply because of the anime that they've seen. Then again, some of the Chinese guys I know see sex in everything,

Anyway, they're ignorant, ignore them. The turth of the matter is that Japanese people are not more perverted than Americans. You have to understand their culture. Nudity isn't the evil thing that it is in non-Christian dominated areas (Shame of nudity comes from the Adam and Eve incident). Group baths, public bathrooms, peeing in the street can be typical for Japanese.

Of course, this doesn't cover the fact that nudity is a sexual stimulant for guys, I mean, it is there for a reason... I'm just saying that it isn't the only one.

All the violence makes my parents wet their pants?

Heh, sorry about that question, I watch anime with my parents and they get on my case. Ok, violence... it's everywhere, trying to protect children by covering them from the truth is a disservice. You stupid Americans! Anyway, then again, it's not like they're glorifying violence (For instance, sometimes there are large bombs that make a remark on the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki), television can teach without being Sesame Street sweet. I've actually heard that Japanese parents are as concerned with the violence that their children see as much as any parent. Just because they live half way around the world doesn't mean we should assume they're all that different.

Are sonmay or any non-Japanese CDs any good?

No, they're probably bootlegs. They're worse than mp3's, not only are you not supporting the original Japanese companies and destroying the economy of Japan, you're giving money to bad, bad men who are making a profit from your cheapness.

Fansubs, are they illegal?

If you're in Japan, yes. If the anime fansub is being released by a commercial company? Then yes it's illegal. Otherwise, who cares. If there isn't a commercial company releasing the anime, no one is exactly losing money, right? I mean, most anime fans would never buy raw Japanese videos, so it's not like Japanese companies are losing profits.

Plus, people who watch fansubs are punished accordingly with shoddy quality video, bad translations, evil distributors, and other problems that are different from the problems that come from commercials tapes that are plagued with the stupidity of the companies that care more about money than the fans of anime.

Mixxzine/Tokyopop, do they suck? Are they sexist? Are they filling their mags with crap so that they can sell less manga for the same price?

Oh baby yeah. Let's look at all the beautiful Asian girls that they have oogled in recent magazines. In fact, look at all the live videos brought over to America from Japan and China. If it's not martial arts, then it usually has a sexy Asian woman on the cover, man, I hate people who use women as sex objects. Everything went bad after they dropped Sailor Moon man. By the way, got to love all the girl/girl action in the last issue... Bastards.

Animerica, compared to the above magazine, are they not the force of good in the anime American continium?

Yeah, this is my favorite anime/manga magazine. Animerica Extra brings over cheap translated manga with titles guranteed to be released every month. Their articles are interesting and informative and relevent to the anime community. They're not sexist or annoying. They cater to the fans.
