GetRight: www.getright.com
This is the program that I use, I paid for it so I don't use the other
free ones... although Getright is in my top 3 programs that crash (according
to Norton Crashguard). Perhaps it's because it's always on....
Benefits: Resume, Recover files,
FTP login, Schedule Download, Shutdown computer
Getright Tips:
Download Accelerator: This
is new, apparently they use a special algorithm that makes downloading
hecka fast, it's tempting, and it's free. http://www.downloadaccelerator.com
Benefits: Supposedly downloads
faster.
Internet Exploror/Netscape: Sometimes the only way to connect is through these browsers. Personally I find that browsing FreeDiskSpace/MySpace is faster in Internet Explorer (although I still use getright when actually downloading the files). Also, sometimes pages are designed for certain browsers, so if you get something funky, try the other brand. Another trick that I like to use to boost speed is to turn off pictures, sounds, java, and javascript, this disables all banners, but it also disables some pages too so you got to watch out.
Internet Explorer seems to be more
compatible with most pages. Plus it comes with the Windows Update button
under Tools.
After you fill your harddrive up with big freaking mega files full of anime, you start to wonder if perhaps you could perhaps crop the episode or combine them in some way. This section helps with that.
Realproducer: This stupid program
can be downloaded from real.com It's the only program that I know of that
can edit Realmedia files, unfortunately.
Cropping: The tool for cropping
is rmeditor, read the help files to learn how to use it. Basically you
have to go back to dos and use this format to crop:
rmeditor -i input.rm -o output.rm
-s 1:00.00 -e 19:34.00
Of course you replace input.rm,
output.rm and the start and end times with the appropriate information.
Time format is Minutes:Seconds.Tenths of Seconds?
Windows Media Tools: You can download
this from Microsoft's website. Basically it's a tool to encode/edit ASF
files. Again, read the documentation to learn how to use it.
Cropping: ASFChop is what
you use, also a DOS program but better done in my opinion than the rmeditor.
Syntax:
ASFChop -in input.asf -out output.asf
-start 00:00:00.0 -end 01:30:28.3
-start and -end are optional by
the way, I don't know if it is optional in rmeditor. Time is in the format
Hours:Minutes:Seconds.Tenths of Seconds
Virtualdub: This is one of the best programs ever for encoding AVI's and DivX;-) videos. It allows clipping of videos, filters, change of video and audio compression. It's easy to use and free. I downloaded mine from here: http://www.divx-digest.com/index.html
Click on info next to the thing
you want to download. Get the url and input into your download program.
It SHOULD change into the file that you want to download, unless you're
above your download limit.
Conserve Bandwidth: Open up an Idrive account of your own and just use the Send command to move the files that you want to download onto your personal Idrive. This benefits both you and others, obviously unless you share your Idrive, you'll have sole access to your account, and others less bright will fight each other on the account that you didn't download from.
Resume: To download with a program that resumes, you can take a secure url https:// and change it to just http:// This allows Getright to download a file from Idrive sometimes.
Note, you'll probably still have to log in every once in a while to get a fresh URL, because FDS will terminate you after a certain amount of time. FDS is a pain, but it's the most conveinent method for holding anime stuff.
By the way, PLEASE take the time to logout if you're done downloading from an account. Think about it, hundreds of people try to access the same accounts that you are, a couple seconds can mean one spot for the next guy, at least you'll get better karma.
This server is really random. Sometimes you can get a slew of error messages all day long. Myspace rotates its files so if you get a "folder not found" or network error or something, just download in a couple hours or the next day. Don't worry, I can usually get the files I want within a 2 day time period, it's pretty fast.
Don't Download it: Find someone to leech off of, trade with, buy CDs from, it's better for those who need the bandwidth.
Trading tips: Choice of direct trading with ICQ, mIrc, misc chat program. Or indirect by uploading the file onto a ftp server, myspace.com, or idrive.com. For 56K users, forget direct trading, for me it took 3+ hours just to trade one 50 mb file. Oh yeah, of course the most conveinent method would probably to write CDs and then trade via snail mail, but I have yet to find someone willing to do this with me. If you buy a CD, keep in mind how ridiculously cheap they are nowadays...
CD Burning: I used to always
have problems with free hard drive space. I'd always have ~100-200 mb of
files left, so I used to write to my CDs many times. Little did I know
that each time I did that I threw away 20mb of memory. By the 6th write
I would have wasted enough memory to hold 3 small episodes or 1 large on...
Lesson is to fill up your CD in one stroke...
Winrar and Winace: To conserve bandwidth, many people split up files. To put them back together the above two programs should work depending on the file type.
Windows Mediaplayer: Windows Mediaplayer can play almost anything (except Quicktime .mov and Realplayer .rm files and funny AVI and funny MPG files). And it updates itself so long as you have a connection to the internet open when you come along funny files...
Funny MPG/DAT file: I've found some funny files with the MPG/DAT file that can't be played by Media Player, but can be played by Jiao's MPG player.
Funny AVI/DIVX thing: This is a specially compressed file. You need a DIVX codec that's floating somewhere on the net. I find most files like this are closer to the 100 MB range, but are of a superior quality than most formats. You need the DivX;-) codec to see DivX movies. Go here http://divx.ctw.cc/ and they'll help you out.
ASF utilities: Wndows has a slew of ASF utilities, I recommend ASF Chop which can be used to get rid of Openings and Endings if one wishes to conserve space. The ASF encoder isn't too bad too, just limited in my opinion. The program package is called wmtools.zip or something and can be downloaded at microsoft.com.
Realproducer: Encode realmedia,
I don't like this program very much myself. Sometimes I encode video files
and get audio files in return, I don't think that I'm stupid, but.... Anyway,
the FREE version is hidden on the real.com
homepage.
