Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou
Miyazawa Yukino, model student, smart, beautiful, graceful, athletic, nice, humble. Whatever. Looks can be deceiving, you know. In reality, she's a really lazy girl who's pretending to be all these. Her facade is upheld by her drive and determination to be the best in all areas so that she may be praised by all. Expecting to be recognized and named as speaker to welcome the underclassman, it comes as a great disappointment when Souichiro Arima is named instead. Her magnificent high school debut has been foiled! Whoever can beat Miyazawa despite all her hard work has got to be a big nerd, right? Sorry. He matches Miyazawa's virtues point for point, and more. Smart, athletic, attractive, nice, popular... and to top it all off, rich! Unlike Miyazawa, however, his need to be at the top, is driven by his desire to honor his adoptive parents through pride. Though primarily in competition (at least, in Miyazawa's eyes), the two are drawn towards each other, calling out their real selves. Together, they search for their real selves, making real friends along the way.
What do I think? This is one of my most favorite anime ever! It's introspective, yet very funny. The distances that Miyazawa will go through to achieve her goals is quite amusing. What probably makes it even more interesting to watch, is that it's something I can relate to... and I believe, many others (though I'm sure, not all) share this view. A lot of people hide their true selves within, wearing a mask once they're in public. Quite a good portion of the show is drawn in manga style. The reason, I've heard, is that this was a low-budget project. I don't think it takes away too much from the story. I find it nicely done, and it seems to echo the KareKano manga's style. In any case, if this summary fails to convince you. Try this one: KareKano is a production of Gainax, under the direction of Evangelion's Hideaki Anno. There. How's that?
