Marmalade Boy "Oh what a tangled web we weave" --Charlotte's Web
Oh, mother of all relationship geometry, this series is practically filled with them. [Figure 1] We open the series to find out that during their trip to Hawaii, Koishikawa Miki's mom, Rumi, has fallen in love with Matsuura Youji, a man she met on the trip, while her dad, Jin, has fallen for Matsuura Chiyoko, Youji's wife. The feelings being mutual, they've all (happily) decided to divorce and move in together so as not to break the parent-child relationship. Miki's not too thrilled with the idea, even though she is gaining a very cute step-brother. [Figure 2] And as she contemplates her interest in Matsuura Yuu (step-brother-to-be), an old friend, one who rejected her during middle school declares that he's loved her all along. [Figure 3] Along comes Arimi, Yuu's ex-girlfriend, who decides that the best way to get Yuu back was by making Miki jealous of her and Ginta (aforementioned "old friend"). [Figure 4] Then there's Arimi's cousin, the reason for Ginata's rejection of Miki and the cause of Yuu's annoyance as he sees Yuu as a competition for beloved Arimi. [Figure 5] At the same time this is happening, Miki's best friend, Meiko is in a secret relationship with Na-chan, a.k.a. Natsuka-SENSEI. Unaware of the Meiko-factor, another teacher tries to get a good catch in Na-chan. And all this is only the season opener.
What do I think? If you like relationship stories, here's a zinger for you. It's cute, it's complicated, it's full of insecurity. The characters are pretty well-developed. Miki's an all-around good kid, good student. Yuu and Ginta are nice, though they can both get on Miki's nerves. Arimi knows what she wants. Meiko deserves all heaven has to give her. I just like the series. Like I said, it's cute. Watch it. :)
