sailormoon is a series by takeuchi naoko, running from 1992-1998 in nakayoshi, a manga "phonebook" published by shueisha, aimed towards elementary school students. the anime was produced by toei. the anime series is actually pretty different from the manga, although the basic premises were the same. the manga was much more serious and the anime delved off where it was convenient. the first sailor moon r series (the "return" arc with the aliens, not the "romance" arc with chibiusa) did not exist in the manga and were actually filler episodes until takeuchi-sensei could write enough chapters to animate. the manga lasted 18 tankubons and the anime lasted 200 episodes and 3 movies. the anime also ended a few months earlier than the manga, explaining the discrepancies about chibichibi's identity.
