Shoujo Kakumei Utena
Revolutionary Girl Utena

Anthy: O roses of the noble castle... O Power of Dios that slumbers within me.. Harken unto thy master and reveal unto us...
Utena: ...the power to revolutionize the world!

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who found life empty: it held nothing for her at all.. But she was saved by a traveling prince.. And as they parted, he gave her a ring so that they may meet once again in the future......... Tenjou Utena, pink-haired high school student is once again making waves in her high school, as she continues to sport around in a guy's uniform. The prince she had met as a child had impressed her so much that she wanted to become a prince herself... though she couldn't fully explain it. And worse, she had THE RING.. The Rose Signet, exclusive to, and closely-guarded secret of, the school's student council. It marked her as a duelist to "revolutionize the world." She might probably have lived a life with less grief if she had just minded her own business. Seeing Himemiya Anthy (Anshi) abused by her boyfriend, she challenges him to release Anthy, not knowing of the mark she carried in wearing the Signet, that it marked her as a duelist and would plunge her into many duels for a betrothal to the Rose Bride, Himemiya Anthy... How far and how well can the girl play the prince?

What do I think? Well, at first this story just sounds like a twisted fairy tale.. With a girl wanting to be a prince instead of a princess, with no intentions of rejecting the idea of being a woman.. then landing herself an engagement. But the inner workings within the school start to show that "something is rotten in the state of Denmark" (Shakespeare). As the story progresses, the tone gets a little gloomier each time, with some silly episodes to throw you off inserted in between. I find the themes of controlling your own fate and the difference between reality and illusion to be similar to Lain, though that's probably where similarities end. Their character designs are sharper and more angular, and the colors are more defined. Utena has a really complicated plot twist and some of the music is just.. *bizzare*. Imagine the pre-fight song, "Birth records, death records.." and proceeding to name other records... *Bizzare* is the only word for it.

Number of episodes I've seen: 24 of 39, haven't seen the Movie (Adolescense Mokushiroku)
