ABSTRACT
In recent years, the integration of CAD and CAM has received significant research effort as it has a major potential to improve industrial performance. Product Data Modeling is becoming accepted as the mechanism by which a central source of product data can be captured to provide an integrating mechanism between a range of design and manufacturing functions. It is a concept which captures and represents all necessary product information throughout the whole life cycle of a product. By using Product Data Models, a common information repository, product can share relevant data in order to produce common parts to reduce lead time and meet the industry demand.
CAD/CAM technology is becoming popular in industry, product data generated by CAD/CAM systems in enterprises expand rapidly. The problems of product data exchange among heterogeneous systems have become serious. By using Product Data Model consistent data transfer and data sharing is possible in efficient way. This paper presents an overview of the Product Data Modeling in terms of methodology, standards, data sharing and data exchange.
