Bubblegum Crisis

Knight SabersBubblegum Crisis is the story of a world gone mad and a possibly futile attempt to reconstruct it as it should be. It focuses on a team of mercenaries lead by the daughter of the man responsible for creating Boomers, artificially intelligent cybernetic beings. The Boomers began to wreak havoc when their designs were perversed by those who owned them. Trying to salvage what she could of the Boomers' real purpose and state of being, Sylia Stingray formed a mercenary group called the Knight Sabers. Composed of herself and three other women, along with a few individuals who were willing to aid them, the Knight Sabers may be the only threat to corporate power, however minor they may seem, by the year AD2033.

This anime is widely considered a classic despite the fact that it's not all that old (made in 1986-1991). It has spawned two spin-offs, one SD feature, a wide variety of books, several manga (including one pathetic American attempt to explain the mysteries), and much more. The following, while not as strong as it used to be, is certain to become immense once the television series finally airs in Japan. A new BGC TV series and a series for The AD. Police Files, one of the two spin-offs, have been announced. BGC fans, both old and new, are much looking forward to the day when they will come out.

Bubblegum Crisis is also home to some very memorable and popular characters. Who are they?

The Knight Sabers

Sylia Stingray The mysterious, sexy, brilliant leader of the Knight Sabers.
Priscilla S. Asagiri The hotheaded rebel and long-range expert.
Linna Yamazaki The pretty, athletic melee expert, and most normal of the group.
Nene Romanova The cute, friendly field tech expert, and least combat-worthy.

...and of course...

Largo, the Boomer Messiah who is obsessively in love with Sylia and will stop at nothing to annihiliate mankind.

There are many other characters, but those five are the most important. The stories depend on what they do. Sylia and Largo seem to have been lifted straight from ancient literature, archetypes of the noble villain and shadowy heroine. The others act as literary foil. Priss is so very human in her emotions, Nene so sweet and demure, and Linna so absolutely normal that one can only wonder why she ever joined the Knight Sabers. All of them have a reason for being part of the team, ranging for glorification of her position to vengeance to a need for some extra cash.
