My 1960 Volkswagen Deluxe

A place on the web for my handed-down-from-my-father-car

Old motor expired at 4260 miles, second time around the odo, thursday morning i bought the trading post looking for another vw, for a donor engine : ) Sunday morning i had what was supposed to be a 1970 bug.
Turns out it's not, the chassis number says its a '70 the other chassis number matches, but it has all 1967-68 features??? Sunday afternoon the motor was already out. Time to find out why my new/old car only cost $150 AUD
Engine looked dry, well alot dryer than my current engine, which has a terminal crack that requires oil to be put in every, EVERY trip. Not fun, and probably not safe for other road users too.
Now for some fun, tearing down the engine from the 70 showed typical overheating, when pulled it was missing much of the cooling tin, which in a aircooled vw is of utmost importance.
Also the car had a almost brand new set of extractors on it too, Worth probably 150 bucks on their own!!!
The plan was to strip both motors down to short block form and put all the good bits from my engine on the 70 block and put it back in : ) After pulling down my motor it showed that the good bits were not so good, the motor desperately needed new rings, heads were fine (dual port variety), the quest began for a 88 mil ring-set. which proved to be impposible to find, and after reading much of the vw literiture i have accumulated over the years it seemed that the 88 mm pistons and cylinders were junk to begin with, (no bore variety so the cylinder walls are super thin!!)
NOt long on here so quick details of work done:
new rod bearings
new piston and cylinders 85.5 mm
new gasket set
plugs
leads
points
clutch disc
regulator out of 70 bug

YEAR/MODEL/MAKE
1960 Volkswagen Beetle Deluxe
ENGINE
1600cc liter 8v Aircooled Boxer 4 (not weedy stock 1200) this is out of the 1970 bug i bought cos the old motor had a crack : ( Old one was a good cae too, dual reliefs big oil galleries case savers o well. 4 on the floor, reverse is push DOWN, left and back, NOT UP!!! i've heard stories of whole shift assemblies being taken out by those uninitiated with the peculiarities of the bug.
INDUCTION
Single downdraft Weber Carb, DCNF of some sort, seems to be ok, kinda bogs down low, need some ram tubes, so the books say.
SUSPENSION
Stock shocks n torsion bars, sagged out at the back : ( standard swingaxle assembly out back, and kingpin up front, stock, ok just take it easy.
BRAKES
Front - Standard, but drums, kinda below standard to begin with!! can be made to work but require forever maintinence to keep good Rear - standard!!
WHEELS AND TYRES
Porsche 356 chromie replicas, finish isn't good no more, all the chrome gone : (
BODY WORK
Various dents, scratches, house painted decklid er???
INTERIOR
White/ivory vinyl, i got sheepskins so it's spesh! Left over carpet from my nan's granny flat
SOUND SYSTEM
AWA Crusier 6, kinda bummed cos it took me an afternoon to put in but it didn't work, shoulda tested it on the bench before i bolted it in!! looks retro though!
SECURITY
Club locked, and locking petrol cap, it's not ppl nickin your fuel, it's ppl putting extra additives!!
PERFORMANCE
0-100 dunno, run some times after this new combination frees up a bit
0-400 ??? the simulator says i only need 200 to get a 11 second time
Power, hopefully above std, so figure around 60-70 hp, good enough to keep up with traffic, but not gonna win any races from the lights.
COMMENTS
My fun car, fun when it's going. it's nice to have a car where you can fix everything, well almost everything yourself.
