●Alberto Vargas (1896-1982
The Varga Girl is the eternal pinup, alluringly beautiful, yet simultaneously
warm, innocent and approachable. During the 1940s she enchanted and motivated
thousands of American soldiers before the postwar age spelled her demise.
However, although the Varga Girl is inextricably linked with WWII, her
appeal still endures today, and her unique place in American poplular
culture has made her a collector's item. Graphic artist Alberto Vargas's
Varga Girl was introduced to the world on 15th October 1940 by Esquire
magazine. Varga came to America purely by accident, a stopover in New
York on his way home to South America from Europe ensured his lasting
love for American women, whom he believed to be the most beautiful in
the world. In capturing them on canvas he has ensured that we may all
enjoy them through his work.
