WE'RE GOING ON A PICNIC??????
~~~~~~
~*^*~"AH!! Why you little shrimp!! I'm gonna strangle the life outta ya!!"
Kuwabara leapt from my side with such force that he nearly took me with him as I reached out to grab him, furiously trying to hold my tall friend back ... across from me, Kurama does the same, easily lifting Hiei off the ground as he fought and snarled like a rabid beast. It was an event that happened nearly every time all of us managed to get together or to go on one of Koenma's many missions. The fights would start with harmless nit-picking, usually started by Kuwabara : through the minutes, Hiei would nit-pick back, throwing in insults on the side. Eventually, Kuwabara would squeal out some kind of undecipherable response, usually just a jumbled 'Temae!!" or such, causing Hiei to raise his insults, daring a reaction from Kuwabara. And as usually, Kuwabara excepted.
"I'm gonna kill him ... I'm just gonna KILL him!!" Kuwabara spat between clenched teeth, wiggling and fighting as I locked my wrists together around his shoulders, trying to hold him back. It was like trying to hold on to 170-lbs of jello: He squirmed and fought so expertly, nearly escaping several times as my arms lost their grip ... but he held himself back just enough to let me regain my control over him before he fought again. It was just a show.
Another set of arms joins the struggle ... Koenma steps calmly forward in his ningen form to pull back on one of the strong arms, desperately trying to mediate and calm the group down again. He seems to play the parent every time, either refereeing the group or giving us all one of his big speeches.
Kuwabara slowly settles down enough for Koenma and I to release our holds. He straightens himself up and gently pulls the lines of his shirt back into place ... all the while glaring down Hiei as the koorime glares him back. As I watch the two come once more to the brink of nearly wiping each other out of existence, I can't help but wonder if the secret held within the little guy about his connection to Yukina would have stopped these little brawls ... or just make them worse?
Hmm ... I think the later.
But anyway ... I look over to Koenma as he lowers his hands from Kuwabara, keeping a close eye on him, chewing intently on that crazy, blue pacifier of his ...
Kurama lowers Hiei back down to the ground in the park that we're all walking through, keeping one hand on his shoulder as the youkai growls one last time, folding his arms across his chest and turning his back to the group, staring out into the blue expanse of the large pond across from our little picnic area.
Something brushes my back ... a soft pressure that makes every hair on my neck momentarily stand on end. Without turning my head, I see Keiko out of the corner of my eye wrapping an arm up to rest on my shoulder, pulling me back down to the blanket as everyone else begins to sit and settle back down.
With a gentle sigh, I allow her to pull me back down to sit on the blanket, watching everyone but Hiei slide back to their original positions before the brawl had started. I don't pay much attention to him ... he's always excluded himself from the group. Such a strange little guy ... I wonder why he even came along in the first place!
My thoughts are cut short as Keiko flicks a strand of my disobedient hair from my vision. Purely on accident I swat her hand away before catching myself ... but too late. She lands a fist in my gut lightly just enough, catching me off guard. She giggles lightly in my ear and begins to munch down on a stalk of celery, winking slightly.
I smile back, nabbing up a sandwich and taking an inhumanly huge bite, poking playfully at her shoulder. She rolls her eyes and leans back on an arm, taking another bite.
Behind me, two more figures come up on the picnic, Yukina and Yo-mawari ...
... and Kuwabara promptly losses it! "Ahah! Yukina-chan!" he squeals, rising to his feet and grasping the back of his head as she approaches. What a fool!
She smiles cutely at him, then turns a gentle smile to Hiei, flashing wild eyes before joining at Kuwabara's side with gentle ease.
Yo-mawari gives his brother a mock-salute, those strange little ninja star things hopping from his hand to scamper over and up on Hiei's shoulder. Hiei doesn't seem to notice them, focusing all his attention out to the Shinjuku park, glaring at whatever chances to meat his two visible eyes.
Yo-mawari smiles widely, glancing a greeting around the entire group before settling in a great plop beside Kurama, snatching a handful of grapes from his brother's plate.
Kurama turns and tosses his red hair, circling a wink to his brother... who promptly winks back, an invisible conversation going on between the two of them.
"Ahahah!!"
Every thought is cut short again as Kuwabara sinks back to the blanket next to Yukina, laughing like an utter moron. Geesh, what an idiot! He's giving me a headache!
My glance is suddenly turned back to Kurama ... he sits perfectly set amidst the greenery of the park, smiling with that odd hinge of playfulness. He snaps a grape and flips it at Yo-mawari, bouncing it expertly of his nose and out into the park. He smiles that youko smile and turns it to Yo-mawari, sitting back gracefully. In retaliation, Yo-ma takes a carrot and launches it ... but Kurama ducks, and instead it flies out of control past its intended target and pelts Hiei in the forehead.
~*^*~
Damn kitsunes!
Gugh ... can't they find anything better to do that play their stupid mind games with each other?
The stupid carrot thankfully just misses the Jagan hidden under the white bandanna tied neatly about my forehead ... I turn and glare fully at Yo-mawari who is busy rolling all over the grass in hysterics. Kurama sits silently beside him, obviously biting the side of his cheek to keep from smiling. Occasionally he's kicked by 'Wari as he continues to roll around.
Hn ...
Kuwabara's incisive squealing reaches my ears again and I try not to leap across the blanket and strangle the baka ... Yukina's with him... I wouldn't want to hurt her ... but the temptation to rip the idiot limb from limb is too tempting.
Yukina-chan settles down comfortably next to the idiot, taking up a few grapes and popping them in her mouth. I turn away from her and continue to stare out into the park trying to ignore everything, watching the ningen's that have congregated. A few of them I recognize as the bubble-headed little shojo's from Kurama's school, slowly making their way over, giggling like a flock of idiotic geese... not quite as annoying as Kuwabara, but they're getting there.
I chance a look back at Kurama ... he and 'Wari have collaborated efforts, occasionally waving out at the ningen girls ... sparking annoying bursts of hideous, shrill laughter. But as he does, he throws me a smile ... narrowing those feline-green eyes of his in that playful grin that's too much like his youko form than Minamino Shuuichi ...
One of the shuriken's on my shoulder spins and glimmers at me, rolling down my arm to hop steadily to the ground. I watch it with subtle interest as it disappears into the short grass, being buried at times in a sea of green, causing the grass to shift and pucker like a shrew was burrowing under it, before popping back into existence on 'Wari's knee.
He pays it no attention and leans over, grabbing a sandwich from the basket. He carefully unfolds it from the plastic and sniffs it ... turns his nose up at it ... he fishes through it and tosses a piece of that processed meat stuff over his shoulder.
And Kurama smacks him playfully on the shoulder.
Stupid youko's.
These are serious times ... how can they play like a couple of infant ningen babies?
Again Kurama raises a glance to me, winking. I quickly look away, though I'm not quite sure why ... I turn to glare down the shojo's that seem to be flocking closer ... a gaggled mess of skirts and flitty hair ...
They catch a glimpse of me for a moment, and I make sure in that moment I throw them the best 'stay-the-hell-away' glance that I can muster. For that minute they all falter, but continue giggling... and turn to hurry quickly away. Ha! Weak humans!
"Oh, way ta go, Hiei ... ya scared 'em away!!"
I turn sharply only to be pelted with a grape in the nose ... Kuwabara.
He reels back, laughing like a lunatic, his mouth growing to ungodly immense proportions. My blood boils and I think about the path my hand will take to my katana ... the katana to his neck ...
...but Yukina. She sits right in my path ... I couldn't stand the anguish I would bring upon Yukina-chan if I did go through with killing the baka ... the anguish I'd bring on the entire group, the hatred ... the way Kurama would look at me ...
No, I'd probably never kill the shit-head.
Probably.
Aside from him, Yusuke begins to laugh too, met with a slap by Keiko ... causing a slight laugh from Koenma to escape too.
I feel a tug at my trousers, drawing my glare from Kuwabara. Kurama has leaned over his brother to tug gently, beckoning me down to the blanket with a single, slender finger and that seductive glare of his ... and 'Wari raises his knees quickly, catching Kurama in the chest, knocking Kurama back to his designated place on the hideous blue blanket. 'Wari tosses his head of black hair back and laughs ... and seconds later a rogue tree root wraps around his neck and sends him crashing backwards to the ground in a sprawl of arms and legs.
Koenma crosses his arms across his chest and switches the pacifier to a corner of his mouth. "Do you two mind? We don't need to be drawing anymore attention ... OK?"
Yo-mawari promptly sits up, the tree root unwrapping itself and the two returning to their positions as if nothing ever happened ... and the two brothers begin to snicker. Koenma clears his throat and raises an eyebrow ... the two calm quickly, still smiling and turn all attention back to the picnic.
What the hell's a picnic anyway??
I look around the scene ... a large, blue blanket covers the ground they all sit upon ... a basket full of strange-smelling ningen foods sits in the center near the top of the blanket and several large pitchers of colored drinks. Dumb way to spend free time, if you ask me.
I take a deep breath ... really unsure why and turn my attention back out to the park. It's definitely not like the wilderness in Makai... or Yomatsu, for that matter. It's almost sickly ... beautiful... though I'll never admit it. Too much green ... it makes me uncomfortable ... reminds me of ...
~*^*~
Why won't he come sit down?
Kyodai swats my arm lightly, sitting in my way from lunging across the blanket and tackling Hiei to the ground ... I suppose that's a good thing, Hiei would probably be pissed at me the rest of the day ... not that I could really tell! He looks the same all the time ... a stone-cold facade, set brow, straight posture ...
Kyodai pokes me in the arm ... I turn my glance quickly from Hiei to Yo-ma ... his deep black eyes catch me off guard for just a minute before smile back. Without words, we both agree simultaneously ....
"Ahem!"
We both turn to see Koenma watching us carefully, an eyebrow raised. I flash an innocent smile, hearing Yo-ma grunt behind me and I reach out and take up a piece of bread, taking a large bite out of it. Party crasher! Though I'd never tell HIM that! I laugh slightly at the thought, circling a glance.
Koenma sits regally, tucked away neatly behind Kuwabara and Yusuke, more like a guardian than a friend ... or a parent. The way he watches over everyone as he nibbles away on an apple; constantly reprimands Yusuke or myself ...
I lean back on a hand, and continue looking around. It was such a perfect day, just the right temperature ... the sweet smell of the flowers over by the pond floats gently through the wind to my nose, bringing with it the slight smell of a nearby barbecue.
I look out of the corner of my eye and see Hiei, standing like a perfect statue, fail and small ... and sexy as hell. There's just something about him that makes my human heart flutter ... though at the same time makes that very same heart break and crush. He can be so cold, at times treating me as he would treat Kuwabara ... sneering at me, ignoring me ... but there's just a faint hint of something else in those eyes ... I just haven't figured out what yet!
God, what I wouldn't give to be with him back at the apartment right now.
I get another poke in the arm ... Yo-ma points me out to a boat on the pond. A human couple is rowing around, gently breaking the pure surface. He raises an eyebrow and I just shrug, not really sure of what he was getting at.
The shuriken sitting comfortably on his knee squirms and rolls around, like a small dog would, searching for the perfect place to lie. He reaches out and nudges it slightly as it settles into position. Strange little things ... I'm not quite sure if they're living objects or possessed weapons
... hm, or both!
Kuwabara squeals loudly ... once again startling everyone. While all attention is turned I quickly lean back over Yo-ma's knees and grab Hiei's leg. I pull and he hops slightly, steadying his balance to keep from toppling. He throws a pissy look at me and narrows the almond-shaped eyes ... I just smile back, refusing to let go.
He settles, returning to being a statue and I gently let go of his pants, curling a finger in his direction, motioning him to sit on the blanket. I try not to look too eager to have his company, thinking possibly that would drive him away. But none the less, I want him to sit with us ... to sit with ME! I'd hold him closely if I could, stroking that stiff black hair ... but he'd kill me before he ever let me show our friendship in public.
He sighs heavily and looks back to Kuwabara as Keiko and Yukina giggle among themselves ... and steps a bit closer.
I lean back, happy at that much of a reaction and smile, turning my face up to the sky, enjoying the sun beating down on my face, almost blinding me. I close my eyes and feel the plants around me enjoying that very same sun.
The light flashes and I jerk my head back up, opening my eyes to see Hiei reluctantly take a seat in front of kyodai and me. He sits quickly, folding his arms over his chest and closing his eyes. He must be absolutely sweating in all that black, sitting fully in the sun ... I know I'm close to sweating ...
I smile and unfold my legs casually, stretching out to barely brush one of his knees. He opens an eye to mine, making sure that it was only me daring to touch him and closes it quickly. That's all I need ... though I make it a personal goal to get more than that from him today.
I sigh contently, watching Keiko reach over and pinch Yusuke's cheek, laughing as he tries to fend her off with an embarrassed smile. Yukina chuckles, brushing against Kuwabara as she reaches for an apple, sparking another foolish reaction from him ... engaging a chain reaction ...
