When Hotaru was young, she watched her father (Professor Tomoe Souichi) working on an experiment with fellow researchers. This experiment was called the "Tao System". The Tao system was a parallel universe. It suddenly exploded, killing everyone but Professor Tomoe. A light appeared offering the Professor the life of his daughter back. Hotaru's father accepted, and in return the light possessed Professor Tomoe. And a demon, Mistress 9 possessed Hotaru's body. Mistress 9 is a demon that can join the two universes together, but first she needs a huge quantity of energy that she sucks out of Hotaru as she is growing up.
