Sailor Saturn or Tomoe Hotaru

Meaning of the name: Earth firefly

Her first appearence is from the third series, Sailormoon S. At first Sailor Pluto, Uranus e Neptune mistrust young Hotaru, become a great friend of Chibiusa, because they can't understand the origin of the huge energy that surrounds her, despite her frail aspect. According to Chibiusa, Usagi and friends Hotaru is a sweet, sympathetic, friendly girl, but undoubtedly a bit weird: she is subject to sudden sharp pain, to exhaustion, to fainting, and no one knows the reason, also considered that the girl doesn't let to be seen by any doctor, after prohibition by her father, professor Tomoe, famous scientist and owner of Mugen Institute. Equally inexplicable and amazing is her skill as thaumaturge (she's able to heal injuries with the energy released by her hands). In Sailormoon S Hotaru always wears black clothes and is melancholic because of her loneliness (before meeting Chibiusa she hadn't any friend, always rejected by others because of her mysterious powers), but after meeting Chibiusa, Usagi and her friends she begins changing and is more opened and relaxed.

What nobody knew about Hotaru is that her continuous sickness was because of the malefic influence of Mistress 9, the dark creature that possessed her since Tomoe was forced to join up the Death Busters to save his child from certain death. In the end of Sailor Moon S the Sailor Senshi finally understand that inside Hotaru sleeps Sailor Saturn's spirit, the Senshi of destruction, able to put at risk the whole univers with her powers. Thinking that such power could be utilized by the Death Busters through Mistress 9 the Outer Senshi warn the others so that they could be careful and destroy the dark creature before Sailor Saturn's awakening. The Inner Senshi refuse, not wanting to sacrifice Hotaru's life. At first it seems that the Outer are right, because Mistress 9, finally awakened inside Hotaru, prevails over and gets Chibiusa's heart crystal to obtain his energy. But during the final battle Hotaru'willpower defeats Mistress 9: Hotaru finally turns into Sailor Saturn, gives back little Chibiusa the heart crystal and begins fighting against Master Pharaoh 90, the ruler entity of the Death Busters coming from Tau Ceti, helped by Super Sailor Moon. Sailor Saturn's true spirit was then good-oriented. At the end of the battle Super Sailor Moon, thank to the energy of her own heart crystal, successes in saving Hotaru from certain death, but the girl become back a baby and is assigned to her father Tomoe's attentions, who lost his memory of last events.

We see Hotaru again at the beginning of the fifth series, SailorStars, till a baby, with her father: Setsuna goes to the Tomoes' and holds in custody the baby because, to face the new danger threatening the Earth, will be necessary the intervention of Sailor Saturn, the Senshi of destruction and rebirth. Her intervention is in fact fondamental: during a battle against the pareodories sent by Neherenia to defeat the Outer Senshi, Hotaru wakes up and gives her power to her companions, making them obtain the level of Super Sailor Senshi, then she grows up suddenly to four years old and warns her friends of the terrible danger on princess Serenity's future.

The Outer Senshi set up house to the Tomoes' [they probably close their host in the attic or in the walk-in cupboard, because he completely disappears -Iky's note], and with time Hotaru grows up incredibly, both phisically and mentally, learning easily difficult universary notions. One night Sailor Saturn's spirit appears into Hotaru's bedroom and stirs up the child's memories and gives her back her powers asleep: a new fighter finally joins the Sailor Senshi.

Finally all four gathered, Haruka, Michiru, Setsuna and Hotaru make up a real family, with Haruka and Michiru that decide to raise Hotaru as their child and Setsuna helping them, as an "aunt" or so. Hotaru herself considers the two girls as her new parents, and seems satisfied by her new condition, even after recovering her memories and having accepted to have turned back into a baby.
