Vivian Chow's Biography
Vivian Chow was born in Hong Kong, 20th November 1967. She was the only child in her family,
and brought up single-handedly by her mother. First time entering into showbiz as a D.J.
Later, she became a singer.
Vivian Chow was not very popular in Hong Kong until she hired a personal image designer in 1993.
She liked to wear thick eye liners when she was a D.J. at RTHK (a Hong Kong radio station). Her sweet
voice captured hearts of everyone on the airwaves which eventually placed her in the second place in the
D.J. competition. After working 5 years at RTHK, she moved to TVB and began hosting a music program named
Music Jade Solid Gold.
She acted in the first movie, "Hearts to Hearts" (Sam Yun Sai Gui). She gained popularity immediately.
Vivian once said that she prefers singing to acting. She decided to pursue singing as her career since she
loves singing. At last, she decided to quit her D.J. job and pursue solely on her singing and acting carrers.
When she became one of the first pin-up idols appearing on the trading cards that was promoted by
YES! magazine, she became famous. She helped establish the card promotion. Other companies began making cards
of Hong Kong stars. Posters, photos, shirts, rulers, etc. of stars arrived in the market and all using Vivian's picture
to promote them first. Until today, no star has as much idol merchandise on the market as Vivian. She is the leader.
When Vivian released her first photo album "Dreams" in 1992, that contained many beautiful pictures of herself, other stars
followed her lead and produced books as well. Vivian has created a new area for the entertainment industry.
Several albums later, Vivian changed companies and signed with PolyGram Records Limited in 1991. This moved further increased her
popularity. As more of her albums came out, her singing ability also improved as well. Her sweet voice captured
the hearts who listened to her songs. She became the most popular female star in Hong Kong and also became
one of the top five female singers in Hong Kong.
Soaking for more than 10 years in showbiz, Vivian turned into a beautiful, wordly-wise lady.
Her private life was decorated with rumours from the mass media, but she taught herself against the
bad press and unwanted exposure.
Vivian is known as a multi-talented woman in art, make up, and music.
She made her own make-up in several of her albums. She is also very good in duplicating other people's
signature by hand. She plays the piano very well, composed songs for her albums and also plans her music
arrangement. Only by that way, she can express her own feeling and emotions for her fans to experience. She also can sing in Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese
and English. Besides, she has a strong character. She doesn't want to attract fans by changing with time and being more innovative.
Vivian always be herself in every performance. She wants to be appreciated for her talents, and not for her physical appearance.
Vivian took up a Mandarin course before started singing her first Mandarin album, "Rumours". Then,
she entered the Taiwanese market with her new Mandarin album and CD in 1993. In only a short time,
she had learnt Mandarin and gained instant acceptable in Taiwan. She made some appearances on Taiwan shows
and special events. In 1993, Vivian got chosen as "Star of Livelihood" and also as "Lover in The Army" in Taiwan.
Again in 1994, she was chosen as "The Most Popular Commercial Actress", also in Taiwan.
She also took a Japanese course to enter the Japanese market. Her fame increased.
She has many fans because of her sweet smiles and her goddess-looking face. She was selected as "NHK Most
Popular Female Singer" in 1993. Even, a Japanese Pop magazine featured her on the cover as "Hong Kong's
Most Attractive Female Singer".
In 1994, Vivian started her tour to South East Asia countries, like Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.
On her tour in Singapore in 1994, she held a personal music concert. She came back to Singapore again
as the "Courtesy Ambassador" for the Courtesy Campaign variety show on July 2nd, 1995. And in October
1996, she was invited as a guest star in the local Manhunt contest. She also performed in Jakarta,
Indonesia in August 6th - August 10th 1995 as she was invited by Hailai International Executive Club on its 4th birthday.
That was the first time her fans in Indonesia could meet and see her directly. She performed her newest
album, "Leaving Your Love Everywhere" in the invitation. Then in 1996, she was invited again as a courtesy guest star on
a Batik manager's son marriage. And in the year of 1997, exactly on August 31st, she came to Las Vegas, USA. Again, still in the year of 1997, Vivian came back for a show in Las Vegas on the Thanksgiving Day, November 29th. Would it be her last show before she disappeared in the entertainment showbiz ?
Vivian and a partner opened a gift shop in Shatin, Hong Kong.
In 1995, she was selected as the second best female Asian singer.
Vivian is very afraid of water. When she was a kid, she was thrown into the water from the floating
platform at a seashore by her cousin. That's why she still doesn't know how to swim. Even, she always
takes baths with water no higher than her chest. But at last, she could finally overcome her fear of water.
She is learning how to swim right now.
She wants to marry a guy who is not younger than or too much older (less than 10 years) than her and
the guy has to be able to teach her everything, mature, caring and talented like her. She claims to have
a boyfriend in Japan, but refuses to disclose his identity to anyone. Then she stated that she does not
have a Japanese boyfriend in December 1996.
Later in 1997, Vivian was back to Joe Ni, her previous lover and the son of Ni Kuang, a Hong Kong science
fiction writer. This time, they seem to be much closer than before. Even, Vivian has bought an apartment
so they can live together. In this case, Vivian will still live with her dearest mother.
