"I
don’t know how it started. When I was a kid, I was fascinated by those
cartoons of my times. Gatchaman (G-force), Macross and Transformers were
my favorites. I remember the times I like drawing Transformers, I drew
a lot of robots and stuff, those simple mecha stuff that a 6-year old kid
will draw. Drawing became my favorite past time, my full-time hobby.
When
I was older, I got influenced by Dragonball Z and started drawing them
. I started to create my own characters and tried to map out storylines
too. Those were the times when I was fascinated by the powers of the super
humans in Dragonball Z, even my own characters have such powers.
When
I was in secondary school (High School), I totally neglected drawing the
when into other interests. I was more into PC games and other teenage stuff.
After
I completed my 'o' levels and await for my enrolment to a Polytechnic,
I start to draw again. I was really into manga style of drawing and tried
many different styles of manga art. I was initially influenced by Ranma
½ way of manga style. I also created many characters and stories
that were a lot more complex.
In
my Polytechnic years. I met Bert, who introduced me to Image Comics and
Gen 13. I begin to follow Gen 13's body anatomy style, only less exaggerated.
Bert and I also create titles. Bert was more to dark gothic characters
while I'm into the mainstream type, creating teams and superheros, minus
those spectacular costumes.
I quickly
became tired of superhero’s stuff. Those stereotype looking superheros
just isn’t my style. I began to drift more to the alternative style. I
also was partially influenced by Bert’s gothic style in comic drawing.
My
manga style has change over the years. My character style don’t even resembles
that of Ranma ½. I was trying to drift away from the conventional
manga styled artwork to a style that you can’t find anywhere. I’ve also
changed my character's outlook many times and so on.
In
Singapore, all fit young men passed 18-years old are to serve the Army
for 2½ years as a form of national service. Army was tough in the
first few months, all the training and regimental discipline they try to
drill into us almost killed me. After those “hell” months, life’s pretty
okay. I now even have time to draw at night.
Sad
to say, the army is a boring place, all you do is drills, parades, out-field
training, fatigues and so on. The Army has really sucked out all my creativity
juices. I’m really looking forward to my service end date, which is end
of this year (Dec 2000)."
