I hate to give a negative review to a film like "Magnificent Warriors," because the martial arts and stunts are done with such bravado, and in '87 that's what Hong Kong cinema was really about. Punch for punch this is one of the better galleries for Michelle Yeoh's talent as a martial artist. Nevertheless, the story and characters seem to have stepped off the screen of a "G.I. Joe" cartoon and have just about as much depth.

Wait for the executions sequence if you don't believe me.

Basically, a group of rebels help defend a Mongolian city against Japanese occupiers during World War II. Though her character was obviously inspired by Indiana Jones, as far as looks go, Michelle Yeoh has never been cuter.

Model-turned-actress Michelle Yeoh (then known as Michelle Khan) wasn't much of a fan of "Magnificent Warriors," at least from a film making point of view. On the third day of shooting she injured herself and after filming wrapped Yeoh threatened to never make another action-orientated film again. Most of "Magnificent Warriors" was filmed on location in Taiwan, in what was supposed to be a three-week shoot. Unfortunately, Taiwan experienced their largest earthquake in recorded history that year and filming went on for another three months. Years later in an interview Yeoh would remember "Magnificent Warriors" as a film she didn't have any fun making.
