Welcome to the new Berkeley Youth Orchesta Website! This site will bring you all the latest infomation about BYO. E-mail me with new ideas or
things you would like to see posted.
The Berkeley Youth Orchestra is a group of gifted and accomplished young orchestra musicians between the ages of ten and fifteen. The ensemble of nearly sixty players from all over the Bay Area rehearses on Saturday mornings during the academic year. Fall, Winter and Spring concerts are given in the sanctuary at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 2727 College Avenue in Berkeley.
A progressive, comprehensive program allows students to develop sight-reading, technical and musical skills while playing selections from standard orchestral repertoire. Music is selected to represent various origins, genres and historical periods. Musical selections for the first concert set are less difficult technically. Rehearsals focus on sight-reading technique, intonation, rhythm, ensemble, listening skills, and sound quality. As the year progresses, the focus of the program widens to include more challenging repertoire and discussion of motives, themes, phrases, forms, and more complex musical ideas.
Music is selected from standard orchestral repertoire. Members have enjoyed performing side-by-side with BYO alumni and members of other local youth orchestra, and receiving coaching sessions from professional musicians of the San Francisco Opera and Ballet orchestras as well as other Bay Area symphonies.
Jay Lehmann joined BYO this season as Woodwind and Brass Coach and leads the wind and brass ensemble. He has lived in the Bay Area for his entire life, grew up in Marin County, and now resides in the East Bay. Jay received a Bachelors Degree and Lifetime Teaching Credential from the University of California, Davis, and a Masters Degree in Trumpet Performance from California State University at Hayward. He taught high school for 20
years in
Richmond and Danville and his instrumental performance groups have won
awards
throughout the state, including two performances at the Monterey Jazz
Festival as first place winners. Currently the Co-Chairman of the Music
Department at Laney College, Jay teaches music theory and conducts
various instrumental ensembles. Recipient of a Golden Bell Award for Outstanding
Teaching in the State of California as well as a Lifetime Achievement
Award from the PTA, Lehmann has been selected as the Laney College Teacher of
the Year.
We rehearse on Saturdays from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm during the concert season, which begins in September and ends in May. Auditions for the 1999-2000 season will be held on Saturday, August 28 and Sunday, August 29, 1999. For more information, or to make an audition appointment, please call Vanisha Evans, Manager, weekdays between 9:00 am and 8:00 pm at (510) 444-4857.
Auditions, rehearsals and concerts are held at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 2727 College Avenue (at Garber St.), Berkeley, CA 94705. Garber St. is approximately 3 blocks North of Ashby Ave.

A MULTIDIMENSIONAL PROGRAM The Berkeley Youth Orchestra is a group of gifted
and accomplished young musicians. It is designed to provide a stimulating,
high quality musical experience and instruction in orchestral technique,
literature, ensemble and musicianship. The program includes an exciting
weekend retreat September 15-17, 2000 at the Cazadero Performing Arts Camp.
Playing in the orchestra is fun and becomes an important part of the lives of
its members. The Berkeley Youth Orchestra feels it is important for all
musically talented students to share their skills and gifts with others.
Therefore, Orchestra members are required to participate in their school
music programs.
Music Director Ann Krinitsky takes the podium for her eleventh season with
the Berkeley Youth Orchestra. She also conducts the Community Women’s
Orchestra (tenth season) and the award-winning Acalanes Chamber Orchestra
(ninth season). Ann directs orchestras at the Laney College Summer Music Camp
and at the Cazadero Performing Arts Camp. She has guest-conducted the Women’s
Philharmonic, the Maui Symphony, the Camellia Symphony, the San Francisco
Concerto Orchestra, and the Marin Chamber Orchestra. Ann has conducted world
premieres of compositions by Gwyneth Walker, Katrina Wreede, and Mary
Watkins. Her teachers have included Michael Senturia at UC Berkeley, and
Harold Farberman at the Conductors’ Institute and the American
Composer-Conductor Program in Hartford, CT. In 1997-1998 Ann was appointed to
a one-year position as violinist with the Honolulu Symphony while on leave
from her Bay Area posts. In May, 2000, The Women's Philharmonic named Ann
Krinitsky as the recipient of the second annual JoAnn Falletta Woman
Conductor's Award. The award, named for the former artistic director and
conductor of the Women's Philharmonic, is presented to a woman who is
actively pursuing a career in the field of orchestral conducting.
Woodwind and Brass Coach Jay Lehmann returns for his second season with the
BYO and leads the wind and brass ensemble. He grew up in Marin County and now
resides in the East Bay. Jay received a Bachelors Degree and Lifetime
Teaching Credential from the University of California, Davis, and a Masters
Degree in Trumpet Performance from California State University at Hayward. He
taught high school for 20 years in Richmond and Danville, and his
instrumental performance groups have won awards throughout the state
including two first place performances at the Monterey Jazz Festival.
Currently the Chairman of the Music Department at Laney College, Jay teaches
music theory and conducts various instrumental ensembles. Recipient of a
Golden Bell Award for Outstanding Teaching in the State of California as well
as a Lifetime Achievement Award from the PTA, Lehmann was selected as the
1999 Laney College Teacher of the Year.
Josh Walden returns for his third season as string assistant. A former
concertmaster and soloist with the BYO, Josh is now a music major at UC
Berkeley where he serves as Assistant Concertmaster of the UC Symphony.
Program: It is a BYO tradition to perform music selected from standard
orchestral repertoire. All rehearsals are conducted in a fully professional
manner. BYO members have enjoyed performing side by side with BYO alumni and
members of other youth orchestras. Musicians have received coaching sessions
from SF Opera and Ballet orchestra members and other Bay Area professional
musicians. Repertoire is selected to present technical and musical challenges
to students on all instruments, to represent the various historical periods,
styles, and genres of orchestral music, and to serve as the basis for
discussion. Handouts and brief lectures address topics such as: key signature
and corresponding major and minor scales; motivic and thematic development;
phrasing and articulation; formal structure; biographical information on
composers, including dates, education, major influences and important works;
and parallel or corresponding movements in other art forms, such as painting,
sculpture, and literature. Audio tapes of the current program are circulated
for home listening.
Musical highlights from the 1999-2000 season include Bacchanale from Samson
and Delilah by Camille Saint-Saëns, Symphony No. 104 in D Major, 4th movement
by Franz Josef Haydn, Berceuse and Finale from The Firebird by Igor
Stravinsky, Concerto for Strings and Cembalo, Op. 30 by Antonio Vivaldi, and
the BYO commissioned world premiere of Katrina Wreede’s Escapade for
Orchestra and Candy Wrappers.
Parents: Parents play an integral role in BYO. They are requested to help
with structuring their child’s practice time, and to assist with rehearsal
set-ups and refreshments, chaperoning retreats, and planning the spring
fundraiser, Festa Verdi. Attendance at the initial Parents Meeting on Monday,
September 11, 2000 from 7-9pm is mandatory!
Cost: The BYO is an independent, non-profit organization. It is funded by
ticket sales, donations, and fundraising events such as the annual Festa
Verdi and Silent Auction fundraiser. $420 includes all three sessions of the
2000-2001 season, 4 tickets for each concert, and the retreat at Cazadero.
Financial Aid is available. A second member from one family pays 2/3 of $420
($280).
