Welcome to the new Berkeley Youth Orchesta Website! This site will bring you all the latest infomation about BYO.  E-mail me with new ideas or things you would like to see posted.

Our Orchestra

The Berkeley Youth Orchestra is a group of gifted and accomplished young orchestra musicians between the ages of ten and fifteen. The ensemble of nearly sixty players from all over the Bay Area rehearses on Saturday mornings during the academic year. Fall, Winter and Spring concerts are given in the sanctuary at St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 2727 College Avenue in Berkeley.

A progressive, comprehensive program allows students to develop sight-reading, technical and musical skills while playing selections from standard orchestral repertoire. Music is selected to represent various origins, genres and historical periods. Musical selections for the first concert set are less difficult technically. Rehearsals focus on sight-reading technique, intonation, rhythm, ensemble, listening skills, and sound quality. As the year progresses, the focus of the program widens to include more challenging repertoire and discussion of motives, themes, phrases, forms, and more complex musical ideas.

Music is selected from standard orchestral repertoire. Members have enjoyed performing side-by-side with BYO alumni and members of other local youth orchestra, and receiving coaching sessions from professional musicians of the San Francisco Opera and Ballet orchestras as well as other Bay Area symphonies.

A MULTIDIMENSIONAL PROGRAM The Berkeley Youth Orchestra is a group of gifted and accomplished young musicians. It is designed to provide a stimulating, high quality musical experience and instruction in orchestral technique, literature, ensemble and musicianship. The program includes an exciting weekend retreat September 15-17, 2000 at the Cazadero Performing Arts Camp. Playing in the orchestra is fun and becomes an important part of the lives of its members. The Berkeley Youth Orchestra feels it is important for all musically talented students to share their skills and gifts with others. Therefore, Orchestra members are required to participate in their school music programs.

Music Director Ann Krinitsky takes the podium for her eleventh season with the Berkeley Youth Orchestra. She also conducts the Community Women’s Orchestra (tenth season) and the award-winning Acalanes Chamber Orchestra (ninth season). Program: It is a BYO tradition to perform music selected from standard orchestral repertoire. All rehearsals are conducted in a fully professional manner. BYO members have enjoyed performing side by side with BYO alumni and members of other youth orchestras. Musicians have received coaching sessions from SF Opera and Ballet orchestra members and other Bay Area professional musicians. Repertoire is selected to present technical and musical challenges to students on all instruments, to represent the various historical periods, styles, and genres of orchestral music, and to serve as the basis for discussion. Handouts and brief lectures address topics such as: key signature and corresponding major and minor scales; motivic and thematic development; phrasing and articulation; formal structure; biographical information on composers, including dates, education, major influences and important works; and parallel or corresponding movements in other art forms, such as painting, sculpture, and literature. Audio tapes of the current program are circulated for home listening.

Musical highlights from the 1999-2000 season include Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah by Camille Saint-Saëns, Symphony No. 104 in D Major, 4th movement by Franz Josef Haydn, Berceuse and Finale from The Firebird by Igor Stravinsky, Concerto for Strings and Cembalo, Op. 30 by Antonio Vivaldi, and the BYO commissioned world premiere of Katrina Wreede’s Escapade for Orchestra and Candy Wrappers.
