Usually the Evangelion Robots are attached to umbilical cable to obtain electrical external power. This is because the robots can only sustain no more than 5 minutes and 2 seconds of nominal internal power if the umbilical cable is cut. The word is derived from the word "umbilical  cord" of the womb that allows a pregnant mother to feed her unborn child.
