The Scouts
"I am the sailor suited pretty soldier Sailor Moon!"
-Sailor Moon, in the Japanese version
There's nothing more annoying than to go to a really good-looking site
- and not know who on earth Tuskino Usaagi is. Here is a guide to some of
the names in Sailor Moon in Japan. I've also told what they mean, as it's
very obvious Naoko-san chose tham for a reason. Almost all of the names
have "no" in them, which is like an 's.
Oh, yeah - one other thing. In Japanese, names are backwards compared
to ours. Therefore, the name Hino Rei would be Rei Hino in english.
Tsukino Usagi (Pronounced Su-kee-no Ooh-sa-gee)
-
Serena. Tsuki means moon, usagi means rabbit, and no means of, so her Japanese
name means "Rabbit of the Moon". This is a pun on a myth that there is
a rabbit on the moon pounding rice into mochi, kind of like how Americans
see a man in the moon.
Mizuno Ami- Amy Anderson. Mizu is Water,
ami is friend, so her name means "Friend of Water".
Hino Rei -
Raye Hino. Hi means fire, and I'll assume rei means soul or spirit, since
her name means "Spirit of Fire".
Kino Makoto - Lita. In Japanese,
ki means wood or tree, and Makoto means wisdom, so her name means
"Wisdom of the Trees".
Aino Minako - Mina. I've heard two different
meanings of her name: "Love's Beautiful Child" and "Little Child of Love".
I know ai means love, and ko means young or child, and one meaning of mina is everyone...
Chiba Mamoru - Darien Shields. Mamoru means
protector, and chi means earth, so his name means "Protector of
the Earth." Darien's alter ego, Tuxedo Mask, is called Tuxedo Kamen in
Japan, and the Moonlight Knight that appeared when Darien lost his memory
after the fight with Queen Beryl is called Tuskikage no Knight.
Chibi Usa- Hmm, kind of complicated. In
the Japanese version, Reenee's name was Usagi, but everyone called her
Chibi Usa ("chibi" means small or little). If you think about it, "Reenee"
is a shortened version of Serena, so I guess they kept this when they dubbed
it. They also call her Small Lady in the dub. Her sailor form was originally
Sailor Chibi-Moon, so Mini-Moon is a good translation, even if it sounds
weird.
Ten'oh Haruka- Amara
Ten'oh. I believe her name means Sky Queen.
Kai'oh Michirou- Michelle Kai'oh. I believe
this is Ocean Queen.
Mei'oh Setsuna- Trista Meiou. I've heard Dark Queen.
Osaka Naru- Molly Baker, Serena's best friend.
Umino Gurio - Melvin. Note: I'm not sure, but I think he goes by his
last name in the original Japanese anime, since everyone calls him Umino,
but this could just be because no one was that good of friends with him.
Tsukino Shingo - Sammy, Serena''s little brother.
Furuhata Motoki- Andrew, the arcade guy
Urawa Ryo - Amy's crush, Greg. I have to explain about this. In the
Japanese episode, they started out with the two calling each other "Urawa-san"
and "Mizuno-san". This is typically how people who are not that close
refer to each other in Japan. By the end of the episode, they are calling
each other "Ryo-kun" and "Ami-san", signifying they are now closer. They (DIC, of course)
cut out a joke where Lita says, "Is this one of those relationships where
you call each other by your first names?"
Furuhata Unazuki- Elizabeth, Andrew's sister.
A lot of times in Sailor Moon, a name will have -chan after it. This shows that the
people are very close friends or family members, or that the person being spoken to is a child. It's like saying -san after
a name, only not as much of an honorific.
-Sama is used to show major respect. Diana calls Serena "Usagi-sama" to
show respect.
Villains- I've left out the ones that were dubbed right.
First season
Jaedite - Jedite
Nephryte - Nephlyte
Zoicite - Zoycite (Note: in the Japanese version, Zoicite was a
man, but he was still in love with Malachite. If you couldn't read that
without giggling, well, then, you probably ought to find a new series.)
Kunzite - Malachite
Queen Metallia - the Negaforce (You know, that huge blob thing full
of water that Queen Beryl talked to?)
Youma - monsters of the Negaverse. Japanese word for monster or demon.
