	Duhs! and No Duhs!

To get around Saffron City easier, go to the top of the Celadon City department store and purchase a drink from a vending machine. Buy a soda and a lemonade. There's a kid on the roof who'll give you an item in exchange for a soda. The guard at the Saffron gate will let you through when you give him anything to drink. He'll share it with the other guards, so you can now just walk through Saffron City instead of having to walk around it.

When you get enough Pokemon, Professor Oak's aides will give you some items that may or may not be helpful. One will be an Itemfinder, which is keen for finding all those hidden items in the game. You can go outside and use it right away. There's an item just above the area where you get it. (Note, one of the two Snorlaxes is next to this area.)
The other is a Exp.All item that basically FORCES all of the Pokemon to gain from a battle. This may SEEM like a good item, but unless you have a small team, the experience is going to be spread so thin that it'll take forever for even a Level 2 Pidgey to get stronger.

If your Pokemon is having trouble staying up, try looking for HP UPs, IRON or numerous other vitamins like CALCIUM. They increase the attibutes your Pokemon has.

If you are still having problems, then try switching tactics in battle. No one will think ill of you if you start tossing out some heavy-hitting attacks instead of waiting for your weaker attacks to become effective enough.

If all else fails, try switching between Pokemon. Some Pokemon have a higher defense against certain attacks, even if they are of the same type as the Pokemon that's being beaten up.

Let's examine techniques. Which ones do you really want and which are actually worth getting? This is very important as you only get four technique slots per Pokemon. I'll admit, I haven't tried every technique, but I have tried a good number of them. These are just _my_ opinions. You may have strategies that are a lot better that require some of the techniques I bad-mouth.
Attacks like Fire Spin and Wrap may SEEM good because your enemy cannot move during the attack, so these are very devastating, right? Wrong-o. These are two of the most PATHETIC techniques in the game. Sure, your opponent gets trapped in the attack, but the attacks don't do much and it's always a variable to see if the attack goes on for long enough to damage your opponent significantly. These are best mixed with techniques that reduce defense or increase attack power (or both). And since the next fight will reset everything, you'll wind up wasting valuable time powering up your Pokemon or lowering your opponents defense, both of which can get tiring if your opponent keeps lowering your Pokemon's attack, raising their Pokemon's defense or if they attack you outright.
Techniques like Selfdestruct are wasteful because they're a no-win sort of attack. Your Pokemon will faint to do SOME damage to the other Pokemon. It's not always effective and it might not even hit if they have a Bird Pokemon which can Fly or another Pokemon that can Dig. In the end, these are utterly useless.
There are techniques that are defensive and quite useful. Like Minimize, Sand Attack, Acid Armor, etc. These allow your Pokemon to become harder to hit, an advantage which can't be countered except maybe by Haze, which means you can avoid damage if you use them fast enough and often.
In the real world, attacks like Fire Blast, Hyper Beam, Solar Beam, Hydro Pump, and other Omega class attacks would be wasteful because they'd rarely hit anything. However, in the game, it's okay to have these because they're so devastating, not to mention that the game allows these attacks to hit at a higher rate than they would in the real world. There are drawbacks, however. All Omega class attacks only get a total of 5 uses each time around unless you use a PP UP (which increases the number of attacks of any given attack). And some, like Hyper Beam and Solar Attack require your Pokemon to sit helplessly for a round. Fire Blast and Hydro Pump are pretty good, no matter what special defenses your opponent has.
Swift is an awesome attack because of the fact that it ALWAYS hits.
There are attacks in the game that are iffy. By this, I mean it's unsure if they're actually good or not. It's up to you to decide if you want them or not. Take Down damages the opponent, but your Pokemon receives one-fourth for the damage given. Double Edge is similiar, only I think Double Edge deals half the damage back to your Pokemon. If used over extended periods of time will either result in you using a lot of Potions and other curatives or running to the Pokemon Hospital every so often. Also, the damage your Pokemon receives is one-fourth (I believe) of what it would receive, were it to be on the receiving end of the attack.
Attacks that are all or nothing may seem like a good idea in the real world, but in the game, they suck. Guillotine and Fissure are good examples. When they're successful, they knock the other Pokemon out. Good, right? Uh-uh. They have a hit rate of roughly 1 in 5. And even then, it might not work if the other Pokemon is underground or "Fly"ing. And like the other Omega attacks, these only get 5 uses every time (unless you use a PP UP).
