The Positive Messages in Sailor Moon
(Ran 6/98 thru 8/98)
There are many reasons why my wife Julie and I enjoy both the English and Japanese language versions of this show. One of the most important reasons is that gives a very positive statement to young women, and to people in general. Sailor Moon encourages us to:
1. Believe in yourself. This is a common message in every episode. This is something very important for girls as they grow up and it's something that we as parents, older brothers/sisters, uncles and aunts, etc. need to encourage our young female relatives to do.
2. Know that it is okay to make mistakes sometimes. Looking at Serena (aka Sailor Moon), we see a reflection of ourselves--sometimes clutzy, enjoying sleep and playing more than hard work, and spending a lot of time daydreaming about the opposite sex. However, when the chips are down, both Serena and Sailor Moon come through, even though it is hard for her.
3. Friends and Family are the most important things in our lives. The Sailor Scouts stick by eachother no matter what. Even when Raye and Serena fight, they still have eachothers' backs in battle. Even though her little brother Sammy is a brat, Serena still runs to the rescue of him and her father when they are attacked by Cardians from the Doom Tree.
4. Women are unique and don't just have one quality. Looking at the Sailor Scouts, you see different types of women: brainy and quiet(Amy/Sailor Mercury), spiritual and hot-tempered(Raye/Sailor Mars), beautiful and sweet(Mina/Sailor Venus) and athletic, passionate and domestic(Lita/Sailor Jupiter. Looking at some of those qualities, you might think some don't mix (i.e. Sailor Jupiter loving sports and fighting, and yet being boy-crazy and loving to cook.) However, women (human beings for that matter) are like snowflakes--no two are exactly alike.
I think that these are very positive messages, and that, like other strong women today (i.e. players in the WNBA, Wendy Lee Graham, Elizabeth Dole) the Sailor Scouts set a good example for young girls and young women alike. Plus, the show is just plain fun to watch!
