When your name appears in the receding hairline you better
start looking for your fellow harriers as co-hare. Be considerate - do
not wait till the very last minute to ask someone to be your co-hare as
he or she might have other commitments. Inform your On-Sex who is your
co-hare and possibly your runsite.
QUOTES:
'When setting a hash trail, first get the lay of the
land. If she is not available, get her sister. Use your determination to
uncover everything for yourself. Look into every nook, cranny and crack.
Be firm in your approach but ensure you do not loose a major point'.
THREE WEEKS BEFORE THE RUN:
Make arrangement with your co-hare - set time and place
to meet, etc.
Remember: this is your run, so prepare yourselves with
plenty of papers, a parang (if necessary) and possibly a compass (if you
know how to use it). If you have any difficulties getting all this done
up to this stage, seek help from your senior harriers or committee members.
Carry out a detailed recce of your run area.
Decide on the starting point (with aplenty of parking
space),
finishing point (at least with a good flat home run of
3 kilometers)
and the checks (minimum three checks, the more the merrier).
Overall, your run should cover a minimum distance of 8
kilometers but not more than 10 kilometers.
TWO WEEKS BEFORE THE RUN:
Confirm your venue and inform the On-Sex. Give him the
directions to your runsite in as short and clear manner as possible. Make
a final recce of your area.
When setting a run, remember the following:
Give yourself 2 hours for setting the run (at walking
pace non-stop). The run should be about 8-10 km or an hour's run.
Put ample papers on the trail.
Indicate CHECKs with plenty of papers
(it is good to know someone from a printing shop or bank
or 3D,
otherwise you have to cut your own papers).
The intention of the CHECKs is to keep the pack together
and also deter the fronts runners from sprinting back to base too early.
A successful run requires AT LEAST THREE (3) EFFECTIVE
CHECKS.
Let the last check be the most difficult one.
You may add one or two false trails after a check,
BUT DO NOT PUT A CHECKat the end of a false trail.
A false trail should not be more than 100 meters.
The correct trail should pick up at about 100 to 200
metres from the CHECK.
CHECKs should be more than 1 kilometers apart.
Try and make the pack go through a variety of terrain
- use all hills, obstacles, lallangs, thick undergrowth,
swamp and streams in the area.
If it rains, make sure to check that your papers are
not washed away. Do not put any check along the last kilometer of the home
run.
DAY BEFORE OR HOURS BEFORE THE RUN:
Lay paper trail for your run and make sure the papers
will not confuse the runners.
RUN DAY:
Remind the Quartermaster of the chilled beers and make
arrangements for food or banquet and transport them to the 'DO' site. Put
up your Hash signs. The Hash signs are meant to show the runners to the
exact runsite, so use them wisely. If the need arise, you may use papers
to lead them to your runsite. If you are not a stingy bastard have some
refreshments after the real tough parts - someone will love you for it.!
HASH CALLS....
Yelling and cursing is a tradition of hashing.
ARE YOU?
if you are not on paper, shout 'ARE YOU?' loud and clear.
ON! ON!
yelled by harriers running in front,, if on paper.
Short cutting is definitely not on paper, so do not reply.
Always warn those behind of you.
WIRE
if you see barb wire in front of you.
THORNS
if you see thorns in front of you.
HOLES
if you see holes in ground in front of you (only those
on the ground!!)
SHIGGY
if you see wet and muddy ground in front of you.
ON, UP
if you are approaching a hill.
ON, DOWN
if you running down a hill.

and it is a check, yell 'CHECKING'
if someone shouts 'ARE YOU?'.

BACK CHECK
if you are retreating from the check.
RECCE
looking for a suitable site for your run.
CONNECTING TRAIL

FROPS
means Front Runners On Papers.
MROPS
means Middle Runners On Papers.
LROPS
means Last Runners On Papers.
SCBS
means Short Cutting Bastards
and their runs will be cancelled
by the Committee headed by the Joint Masters.
DO'S AND DON'T'S....
Firstly, always pay your subscription at the beginning of
the month to the Hash Cash.
When bringing a guest, ask him to sign the Guest Book
and introduce him the main office bearers (Grandmaster, On-Sex and Hash
Cash). New members are only allowed only one free run. Make sure your guests
know the simple rules of Hashing.
Never leave the runsite if you know somebody is lost somewhere
in the jungle. Get the hare's co-operation to form a search party.
Our Kamunting HHH is a registered club, so know your Constitution.
If you run is coming up, make sure you are able to set
you run. Otherwise, make arrangement to swop your run with somebody and
inform the On-Sex of any changes.
At the 'DO', drink at your own pace. The amber fluid is
getting expensive, so finish up yours before going on to the next one.
You may drink to the last available bottle but do not push others to drink.
You may bottoms-up but remember not to push the beers to others. Members
are always welcome to help themselves.
Your Support:
One will notice in hashing that there are those very
faithful 'die hard' who will be there, even in thunderstorms, but there
are those who only go if the weather is fine. The former are those we appreciate
most. One must remember that every hasher has to take turns in setting
the runs. Therefore consider how one would feel if he is out in the jungle
setting a run, while everybody else fail to turn up because of bad weather!!
So, to be a faithful hasher one must be there to give his support, be it
rain or shine.
ON! ON! and keep Hashing days free.
