Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter is the second game in the growing list of Vs titles. For those not familiar with the engine it involes choosing two characters to be put on a team and fighting various other teams untill you get to the last boss.
Gameplay6.0 -Your usaul style of crazy Capcom fighting.Like the previous version this game allows you to choose any two characters from eitheir the Marvel universe or the Street Fighters.Unlike most fighting games the round system in discarded entirely and instead the battle ends when both members of a team are defeated. This gives the game a more frantic pace and forces you to be cautious. However the game plays alot more like the Marvel titles than Street Fighter. So anyone looking for a complex fighter will probably not enjoy this game.Combos are way too simple to pull off as well as supers.A beginner in this game can easily take on a pro with only knowing a few techniques and picking an overpowered character.Which leads to the other problem. There are some characters in the game that are way to powerful.A team of Spiderman and Wolverine for instance are virtually unbeatable in the hands of a good player. My other gripe is unlike X-men vs. Street Fighter there is little variety in the fighters.Practically everyone in here is based off of Ryu having a projectile and some sort of uppercut.Suffice to say this makes the gameplay get old very fast.
Graphics 9.0 - This is where the game shines. With the use of the 4-meg ram cart the translation from the arcade is virtually perfect.Almost every character retains their full set of animation frames and the game runs faster than the arcade! There is alot of pyrotechnics too.Sometimes the action is so hectic the whole screen looks dizzying. There is alot of flash when a super move is done with a character portrait sliding in followed by a rainbow of colors filling the background. When a team super is done its even more impressive with the whole screen sometimes being covered by beams or objects. The only complaint i have with graphics is the backgrounds are recycled from X-men vs. Street Fighter with only a few variations added in.
Sound 8.0 - There are alot of good sound effects for the various attacks that are done.Voices for the characters are also very abundant.Almost to the point where some characters get on your nerves because of how corny they sound(Cyclops comes to mind).Despite the excellent sound effects the music leaves alot to be desired.Capcom seemingly ported the tracks straight from the arcade with no remixing or improvements of any kind.
Story Line4.0 -The premise is the mutant Apocalypse pitting the Street Fighters against the Marvel characters in hopes that they'll destroy each other. While he builds a mechanical cyborg army comprised of captured characters from each universe to dominate the universe. Not very interesting but who plays a fighter for detailed storylines anyway?
Control 10 - Every move is easy to pull off and comes out with blinding accuracy.Anyone should be able to pick up the control scheme easily if they're used to capcom fighters.
Overall 7.0 - Despite being the best arcade to home translation for the Saturn ever and having near no load time the game has its flaws. There are no new characters in the game except for Norimaro who is a joke character. The whole experience feels fun at first but over time the redundant and simple gameplay will become boring.Everything in the game has a sort of deja vu feel.Even the backgrounds are almost completely recycled. So if you don't already own X-men vs. Street Fighter and like Marvel style play this would be a game worth picking up.Otherwise it can only be recommended to a diehard fan of capcom fighters.
