Chapter 1: Destiny

"Make your promise, or maybie it's a threat...'Coswhen you look, you look right through me."

-Underwater, Delerium

Steven Mallory, the newly discovered Lord of Chaos Reborn,Walked. It seemed to be the only thing he could do those days.... He couldn'tgo into a city, for fear of being felt out by a mage of some sort or oneof Michael Lain's hunters.... Or having a noble reconise him from one ofthe portraits of his 'death'....

He didn't remember, didn't really want to--- The guiltof who he was pulled down on him like a lead weight, and if he remembered,he wouldn't only have a guess of the people he killed, but he would knowthem...See their faces...And if he remembered, he might not even care.

And more people might die.

The cloaked man shook his head to rid it of his nightmare, one that plagued him both sleeping and in wake.

"Thinking??" A cheerful voice crept up behindhim and grabbed his hood, yanking it back to explose the insanely pointedears and slitted eyes.

Those eyes narrowed and Steven spun around to face Evan."BASTARD!!!" He screamed, startling birds out of the nearby trees, and swung at the redhead with his fist.

Evan caught it easily and shook his head sadly. "Steven,if you can't beat me, you won't have a chance in hell of taking on thenext threat."

"YOU SAW IT!!! YOU COULD HAVE PREVENTED HIS DEATH!!"

The demon sighed as he realised what the Lord was talkingabout. "Listen, boy, I forsaw a sacrifice...you want details?? I sawa blue aura, and black fire, and a hand of water reaching up to pluck angelsfrom the sky and drown them in the sea, which the fire devoured... Andthen there was barren, dead land...and you trying to hold grains of sandwhich slipped from your grasp. I CAN'T do an accurate reading, for youare CHAOS!!! there are MILLIONS of possibilities for you. The sacrificecould've been you cutting off that ridiculous hair for all I know!!!"Evan ended on a squeek, a far cry from the calm tone he started with.

Steven blinked and fingered one long silver lock. "...Whyare you here, Evan." His voice had gained a tired edge.

Evan sighed. "I'm here to teach you."

"Teach me." Steven deadpanned..."No wayin HELL!!!" He promptly turned on his heel and walked away.

"How far do you think you'll get without my assistance??"

The question was a quiet one, but enough to cause Stevento slow. "What do you mean??"

Evan jogged up the path and grinned slightly, showingfang. "There are things happening now that even I can't forsee...Ryu's death was too wildcard, Na'ora's flight ability...Next thing we know, the Goddess Cianna will go on a killing Rampage!!" He paused for amoment. "Actually...That would be really funny---"

"The point being??" Steven was becoming impatiantagain.

"Simmer, M'lord, simmer...." The redhead strucka thoughtful pose, "We need to consult the experts."

"What--"

"---The library of Azme. And it wouldn't hurt tohave you near your pillar either--"

"ARE YOU INSANE?!!!!!"

Evan blinked. "Well...People have called me thaton occasion, yes... Why do you ask??" He paused. "And so elequentlytoo--"

Steven's gaze was unnamused. "If you haven't realisedit, the guy who RUNS azme was the same person who KILLED me!!!" Hewaved his arms for emphases, causing Evan to chuckle.

"M'lord...The Wizard Justin destroyed Zelan, nota Steven Mallory, if I recall correctly, and while Zelan had killed toget into Azme, Steven Mallory was practially raised by the guy. "Evan shrugged and began walking again at a faster pace, causing Stevento jog to keep up.

"What makes you think he'll let me in??"

"Society is based on Trust. I'm sure he knew whatyou were the first day he really saw you, and chose not to care."The prophet closed his eyes and smiled slightly. "It was a gamble, but perhaps if you were happy it would carry over when you regained yourtrue self." One eye cracked open. "In a way it worked. I haveto congratulate the man...I never did like Zelan much."

"In what way did it work?? I'm miserable, not happy, already people have died because of me, and I'm stuck in this damn body..."

Evan stopped in his tracks and looked at Steven fully."Honestly?? I think you complain to much. You're miserable becauseyou let yourself be miserable. Death isn't forever. And trust me, one dayyou'll really like who you are."

"Is that one of your faulty predictions??"

The demon prophet gave him one of his secretive smilesagain. "Let's just call it personal experience and leave it at that,ne?" And with that he began jogging again.

Steven was left looking after him in confusion.

* * *

"Fire is like a dance...No two moves alike---"Evan grinned when Steven's head shot up from it's position of almost-slumberto glare at him.

"You were watching me back then too??"

The redhead poked the fire with a stick. "I suppose. It was easier to get to know how the new Lord of Chaos' mind worked beforeI met him."

"Why did you take so much of an intrest??"

Evan smiled again, something lurking deep behind his eyes."In the battle to come, you will need certain allies. Ones that holda neutral standing, but yet can even the odds." He was silent fora few moments, leaning back against a log in a gesture of lazyness. "Doyou feel it??"

The change of topic caused Steven to momentarily startle."Feel what??"

"I'll let you find that out on your own. Just openyour senses..."

Violet eyes studied the redhead warely, looking for anyreason to not follow the suggestion. "Open--"

"Just feel."

Steven took a deep breath and let it out slowly, for oncenot questioning the words of the other demon.

Awareness flooded the gates of his mind, everything becomingsharp and surreal. Conciousness flew past his awareness like a random thought---Thentwo---three...

"The forest is alive..."

Evan chuckled. "So it is! Seems we've stumbled intoa fayry grove."

The look on Steven's face was priceless---Somewhat likea child who was just told that Santa exists and is standing in the parlorwith a Castle full of gifts for you.

It saddened Evan, but he didn't let it show outwards. The new Lord _was_ still a child...Still learning, Still experimenting...And now frozen in time like the rest of the damned Demon Race.

"I was told they were myths..." Steven's voicewas barely a whisper, his eyes darting around the clearing. "Whereare they??"

"Hiding, you dolt. They aren't going to come outfor a pair of Demons."

"I thought they usually appeared to trick and--"

"Those are FAIRIES not FAYRYS. F-A-I-R-I-E-S"Evan sighed. "The Fayry are completely different from those malformedsprites."

"How so??" Steven appeared lost.

Evan shrugged and with a wave of his hand the fire wasout. "They are spirits-- Essence of the dead if you will. Protectingthe simplistic forms of life that populate this haven. Our antithesis."

"I thought the natural enemy of the Demon was theDragon??" Steven spat out the last word, filled with self resentment.

"The dragon are our enemy yes---But they are tooclose to our kind to truely be called anti anything." The prophetsighed and waved his hand in the now-moonlit grove. "On one hand, here we are---Our kind tempts and kills for its own gain. We are the darkside of man's soul--because humanity is pieces of every race. The dragonslie in the middle and represent ambition and arrogance."

Steven opened his mouth to argue but was cut off.

"Don't contradict me here, boy... I know what I'mtalking about." Evan's voice was stern. "Ok...So where were we??Arrogance?? good.... Dragons by nature are highly intellegant, yet veryselfish. Take a dragon's whorde for example... Got it? good. On to Fayry...."Evan cleared his throat. "By law, every action, every BEING has anequal and oppisite reaction. We are -technically- evil and can touch thehuman world in certain ways. The Fayry are technically good and also touchthe world in certain ways. However, while our interferience is imeadiate, theirs is created over time."

"How so?" Steven questioned again.

".... They are creators of destiny." Evan saidfinally. "They will complete a man's soul towards a happy ending. And in the end, if that carries through, then they have won that shortbattle."

The white haired man sighed and hugged his knees to hischest. "And our purpose is to destroy the soul."

Evan frowned and stood again, placing his hand on a nearbytree for support. "...Hai..."

The look on Steven's face renewed the pity he had feltfor the young man. Again the rage the young man felt was being turned inwardsto himself--- The blame for Ryu's death, the blame for the deaths of amillion people over a hundred years before. "I'm sorry."

It was barely a whisper, but enough to cause Evan to doa double take. "Excuse me??"

"I'm sorry you feel the need to teach me... BecauseI refuse to fall into that category known as Demon. I refuse to becomethe Lord of Chaos everyone thinks I will be... and I will NOT become Na'ora'spawn, or YOURS for that matter." Evan could only see one of the amythisteyes peeking out from long silver bangs, but the intensity in that glarecaused him to smile.

"Then don't!"

Steven raised his head. "What?"

Evan laughed and gestured around him. "This is whereDestiny is made, M'lord!! Make your own!! Your dragon sacrificed himselfand went against his very nature to relieve Na'ora of your person, I thinkhe knew your nature better than anyone."

The silver haired lord was silent, sitting cold in themiddle of the grove. Bit by bit, the darkness around him was broken bysmall, winking lights. "Destiny??" He questioned the other demon.

Evan leaned back, obviously pleased by the circumstances."It's what I deal in."
