Synopsis

** WARNING: CONTAINS SPOILERS **

Takeshi Kaneshiro plays Chun Gar-Fu, a sweet and shy Piano Tuner, who befriends Yau Muk-Yan, an jobless, aspiring writer and a 'nomad', played by Aaron Kwok, while he tunes Muk-Yan's latest conquest's piano.

Muk-Yan leaves his former girlfriend and has no place to go. He and Gar-Fu meet on the bus and Muk-Yan follows him home. Gar-fu is a nice guy and lets him stay the night and eventually Muk-Yan winds up "moving in".

One day, Mok Mun-Ye played by Kelly Chen, moves into the building and from the first moment that Gar-Fu sees her he is mesmerized... She is learning how to play the piano and she keeps repeating the same piece of music - J.S Bach's most romantic piece- Anna Magdalena.

At first Muk-Yan (Aaron) is very annoyed with her playing and they start off 'hating' each other. She in turn, to annoy and spite him and to catch his attention keeps up with the playing and banter. Gar-Fu is in the middle of all this, while secretly having his 'crush' on Mun-Ye.

Mun-Ye (Kelly) accidentally causes a fire in her apartment and turns to Muk-Yan (Aaron) for comfort. He's finally got her 'hooked' and begins to secretly then openly court her. Kelly and Aaron's characters' have their ups and downs. She finds out about his past escapades with other females and breaks it off.

Muk-Yan (Aaron) disappears for a while and Mun-Ye (Kelly) and Gar-Fu (Takeshi) look for him. She reveals to Gar-Fu that Muk-Yan is the real reason she moved into the apartment in the first place. After seeing him rollerblade outside the apartment grounds, she 'fell' for him, against her own better judgement.

Muk-Yan(Aaron) comes back, with an new job, and begs Mun-Ye (Kelly) for forgiveness and tells her he loves her. They eventually move in together. Gar-Fu (Takeshi) gets upset with Muk-Yan, knowing what a womanizer he is. Since Gar-Fu can't openly express his feelings for Mun-Ye and betray his friendship with Muk-Yan, he turns to writing as his expression.

Gar-Fu's story is about 2 orphans who grew up together and always got themselves into trouble. The boy was called '0' or 'Zero' and the girl, 'X' or 'Cross', because they did poorly in school. They grow up and each go their own seperate ways.

One day, they hear about a contest to look for gold in the Haunted Ruins. The task isn't an easy one tho because 100 people have previously gone mad looking for the gold in vain. X and 0 each individually decide they want to try to be the number 101 and find gold. At the ruins, gate they meet again, recognize one another and team-up together.

Eventually, the pair find the gold but in order for them to keep it, the ghost of the ruins asks them to give something to his long lost love, Mok Mun-Ye, a musical piano that plays the song "Anna Magdalena"....

They search far and wide, enduring many silly escapades and incorrect Mok Mun-Yes', until finally they hear on the radio someone singing a song with Anna Magdalena's tune telling them to call 3 0 6 2 4 7 0 0 for info.

Finally, they find the right Mok Mun-Ye, but she has already passed away... Sadly, she also had an identical piano that played the same tune with the same message of "I Love You".

X and 0 decide to go into the Singing Telegram business to spread romance and love... They are met with many sighing females, as well as, disgruntled lovers/spouses. They break at a serene grassy field and kiss for the first time, each silently declaring their love for eachother.

Gar-Fu(Takeshi) writes a story to express what he can't in reality. His story catches the eye of a understanding female editor, who is in love with her married boss, and inadvertently gets published. Both Muk-Yan(Aaron)and Mun-Ye (Kelly) hear about the story of X and 0. Muk-Yan meets up with Gar-Fu and asks him why he didn't tell him or Mun-Ye how he felt about her... Muk-Yan tells Gar-Fu that he is moving out of the apartment, giving Gar-Fu a chance with her. However, Mun-Ye also moves out as well, but slips a picture of the three of them under Gar-Fu's door before leaving ...

Review

Anna Magdalena is a story of Unrequited Love between Gar-Fu and Mun-Ye, as well as, between the female editor and her boss. The story of X and O is sweet and funny and added a nice twist. In the end, Aaron's character, a selfish womanizer, shows some heart by leaving her so that Takeshi's character has a chance to win her. You assume that Kelly's character doesn't want to be with Takeshi's character because she moves out on her own, but she leaves the photo as a reminder of their time together...???

RATING : 1/2
