Synopsis
Don't Give A Damn is a kung-fu action / comedy . Pierre Lau, played by Sammo Hung, is a veteran police officer of the Anti-Narcotics Department. In the first scene he meets up with Wong Yuk Man or "Rambo" , played by Yuen Mao, on a bus. He is actually a Customs Officer trying to make an arrest. The two argue and mistakenly try to arrest one another and both get in trouble with their superiors at the police station. Inspector Tang Chuen Shek, played by Takeshi Kaneshiro makes a dramatic entrance by flying thru an office window to save the chief who is being threatened by a disgruntled police officer ! Tang goes back and forth between the chief and the officer each blaming one another for wrong doing and each time Tang hits the policeman. Pierre is an old cop who means well but makes alot of mistakes , while Inspector Tang is a young, educated 'yuppie' cop and is made Pierre's superior. Pierre meets the new recruit, Yau Ching. There is an unsaid 'spark' between them. Their first stakeout is observing a Cocaine Drug Deal. The team watches and waits to arrest the dealers. Pierre sees a woman being raped and rushes to save her but jeopardizes the mission. Thru alot of kung-fu action and fighting, the cops wind up arresting the dealers and obtaining the cocaine as evidence. However, Tang gets mad at Pierre saying he almost ruined the case by trying to save the woman. They don't see eye to eye. The cops wind up arresting the brother of Mr. Yamamoto, a big japanese tycoon in the area. Meanwhile, Wong Yuk Man of the Customs Office, while trying to arrest VCD and VD 'Pirates', winds up going to jail for fighting with a group of kids who let the 'pirate' get away. Pierre and Yuk Man meet again and beat up each other in a strange and funny fight. They wind up drawing a truce by shaking hands and becoming friends. Pierre, Wong, Yau Ching and two other fellow female officers Anna and May, all go out to dinner. Yau invites Tang, much to Pierre's dislike. After talking it out and Pierre having a few drinks, Tang and Pierre form a truce and Tang leaves to work on a case. Pierre gets a little too drunk and they take him home. Wong takes Anna home. Yau Ching is a little sick and May tells her to go home while she helps Pierre. May says to her that this always happens to Pierre and that she can handle it. All the while Pierre, in his drunken state, thinks that Yau Ching not May is helping him. The next day, Pierre wakes up with breakfast on the table and a hickie. As he enters the police station, all the men come up to him and give him high-fives, salutes ,etc. saying that he is a 'Tiger' and lucky, etc. He thinks that he was with Yau Ching. He sees her and she is upset and they argue. May comes in and reveals that she is the one that was with him last night. He cuffs May saying that he was unfairly 'raped' by her. Yau Ching leaves and he chases after. They eventually make up. As all of this is happening, Mr. Yamamoto, upset that his brother was arrested, plots with his motley crew to steal back the cocaine and free his brother. He hires some 'American' Punks to do the job for him. One day, one of Mr. Yamamoto's men, disguised as a UHL Delivery man, gives parcels to the chief, etc. The parcels are in fact bombs and they go off. Everyone evacuates the police station and The SDU (Special Duties Unit) arrives to investigate. In all the confusion no one is aware that that the SDU are actually the Americans. Tang and Pierre suspect that something is wrong and follow the SDU. The Americans enter the Evidence room and recover the cocaine. A gun fight insues between Tang and Pierre versus the Americans. They escape but one American, named Sean(John?) gets injured and is captured. In the meantime, Mr. Yamamoto double crosses the Americans and sends his men to kill them. However the Americans prosper in the gunfight and go after the police to free their captured comrade. They kidnap Yau Ching and ask the police to trade Yau for their partner, Sean. To trick the Americans, both Tang and Wong dress up as 'blacks'. Wong winds up winning and he and Pierre meet the americans at an abandoned warehouse. In the meantime, Tang sneaks into the building to try to rescue Yau Ching first. They start fighting and everyone seperates. Mr Yamamoto and his crew show up to take revenge against the Americans. Everyone is fighting eachother and it gets confusing. Mr. Yamamoto, with katana blade in hand, fights against Yang and Yau.
Tang's wooden pole is literally diced to pieces by Yamamoto's Katana !!

Review
Don't Give A Damn was a funny movie. Sammo Hung, recently doing his own American TV Series on CBS, was funny as Pierre Lau. Takeshi was so cute as the yuppie, smart ass cop. I loved his first scene, flying thru glass to get into the office to 'save' the chief, then beating the poor officer. It was silly! The best scene and one not to be missed is seeing Takeshi dress up as a black guy and acting like one ! Very Funny! There was a romance between Pierre and Yau Ching and Anna and Wong Yuk Man but luckily for Takeshi's character, Tang, he left their dinner get together early or else he would have been May's 'victim' ! Overall it was a funny and action packed movie with some good kung - fu scenes! Rating: |
