CHAPTER ONE: THROUGH THE WINDOW
Keiko Hakai pressed her face against the tainted glass of the Furritronics Window. Her eyes scanned everything inside, it all covered in shadows. Her Furry Ears perked up from under her auburn hair when she saw what she was searching for.
"That's It! There it is SoYuhn!" A white bunny girl with short black hair got up from the curb, and stood beside Keiko, pressing her face against the glass as well. "See That?!" Keiko exclaimed, "that's the computer I'm Gonna get. I've heard it works really well."
The two girls stared at the black flat screen computer in the window, admiring everything about it. "Furritronics stuff is great." SoYuhn said, "My mom has a blow dryer from there. She says it's great. Uses it every day."
Keiko backed away from the window and cocked her head at the bunny girl. "A blow dryer? Alright." She brushed her hair away from her green eyes, tucking it behind her ears. "It's getting Kinda dark. We gotta get home soon. I have work tomorrow down on the board walk."
SoYuhn didn't reply, just stared through the window, her ears slowly moving back in alarm. "...Keiko.... someone's in there... you don't think it's a robber or anything do you?" She turned around and pulled a cell phone out of her blue denim bag. "Should we call someone? You know, before anything happens?"
The Cougar girl peeked inside the window again and saw what SoYuhn was talking about. "SoYuhn? I thought you said there was only one person in there... there's three." SoYuhn pressed her face against the glass again and squinted, trying to make out the figures. "I can see the shadows, but not the faces." she replied.
Keiko attempted to zone in on the shadows in the building. "I can make out... a neko? And I think a dog or wolf or something... I don't know what the other one is... what do you think?" "I can't make out a thing," The bunny answered back, "Keiko... you know what? Forget about the whole calling someone thing... I don't really think this is our business. I mean, they could just own the place or something..."
Keiko nodded, "You're right. Lets go." Suddenly SoYuhn's eyes went wide with fear. "Th-th-They're coming towards the door! I think they saw us! We gotta get out of here!" With that, the two girls ran down the street towards the park to get as far away from the building as they could. The branches and leaves of the ground crackled against their bare paws. There was no looking back now. They ran and ran until they could barely breathe.
"Do you... think we lost 'em?" SoYuhn asked, gasping, and holding her ribs. "Yea... I don't hear anyone," Keiko said, plopping herself down on the hard ground to catch her breath. She lay down on the leaves and looked up towards the sky. The sun was setting, and the faint glimmer of the stars was filling the sky. She had no idea where in the park she was, nor what way to head home.
"SoYuhn? Do you have any idea where we are?" Keiko asked between rushed breaths. SoYuhn slowly let herself collapse to the ground, gripping a handful of leaves and crushing them between her fingers. "Not a clue Keiko... Not a Clue," she murmured, "all I know is that we are in central park, and it's almost night fall. We are gonna be stuck here if we can't find a familiar path."
A slight rustling of crackling leaves could be heard from the distance. Both girls jumped up and perked up their ears, listening for who, or whatever it was. "WHO'S THERE!!!" SoYuhn yelled towards the sound of the noise, putting up her fists. "WHAT DO YOU WANT?" Keiko tugged on her shirt "L-l lets get outta here! Like now!" She turned away and started to run, noticing that no one was following her. SoYuhn was still standing where she left her.
"SoYuhn LETS GO!" She yelled, "I DON'T WANNA GET CAUGHT!" SoYuhn turned around and put her finger to her lips. "Shut up Keiko!" She quietly yelled to the frightened cougar girl. "If we run, I'm sure it will follow. Keiko Nodded and slowly walked back to SoYuhn's side. The sound on the walking got louder. The thing was coming to get them.
Keiko's heart pounded in her chest, Keiko's paws shaking ever so slightly. She could feel her fur go up on end. Something wasn't right. Something really wasn't right. And Both Girls knew it. The cracking of leaves and branches got louder and closer. There was no turning back now. They had to face what was coming for them.
A girl's voice came out of the shadows. “SoYuhn? Keiko? Is that you?” SoYuhn slowly let her guard down. “Shikichi? Is that you?” She walked towards the shadow. “Shiki? Don't play games!” A set of red eyes glowed in the darkness, followed by a girlish giggle. “SoYuhn… you're such an idiot.” The girl grabbed SoYuhn with her gray slender arm and dragged her out into the open.
“Okay girlies!!! Put up your arms and give me your money!” SoYuhn struggled and kicked to get away from the laughing batgirl. Breaking free, she turned around and playfully punched her in the arm. “Bitch…” SoYuhn said through giggles, “I hate you!” Keiko fell to the ground, holding her gut, giggling her brains out. “She really had you going SoYuhn!” Keiko Chuckled. “Oh be quiet!!! She had you terrified!” SoYuhn replied in mid giggle. All Keiko could do was look at the ground, embarrassed, for she knew SoYuhn was right.
After calming down, the three girls headed on their way. The Sky was fading to a dark blue, and the cream Colored moon shone down on them. The sound of the mid summer crickets echoed through the park. Though it was late, the air was still humid and warm. Like a regular July day in Kraux.
“So do you know where we are going?” Shiki asked, looking at SoYuhn and Keiko nervously. SoYuhn clenched her paws together and let out a sheepish giggle. “Ehh Not really. We are just guessing.” “Ahhh!” The batgirl whined, “you know what? I have an idea!”
Shikichi ran towards the nearest tree, seething her claws into it. She climbed to a high branch and jumped off, revealing her wings from the back of her halter-top. There she hovered above the tree. “You guys…” she yelled to the girls bellow, “We are going the wrong way! If we travel northwest about 500 feet we will get to the middle school! Let' go!” Shikichi slowly let herself drop to the ground, her wings folding to her back. “Ahh the advantages of flying.” She said with a smirk. The Two girls just glared at her. “Let's go before I kick your ass.” Keiko said with a smile.
Within minutes they were at the baseball field of the middle school. It was close to impossible to see, except with the aid of the streetlights. The three girls walked down the street in silence. Shiki closed her eyes and let the soft sweet smell of the air fill her body. Her eyes suddenly bolted open. “Hey umm… you two… if you don't mind me asking… what were you running from?”
Keiko and SoYuhn looked to the ground, both hoping one would come up with an answer. Keiko Finally spoke up. “We were at Furritronics and some people inside saw us and came after us, so we ran.” SoYuhn nodded with acknowledgement. Shikichi stopped in her tracks and stared at the girls. “...You... you saw them too... the three of them. They are there every night. The red wolf, the black dog, and the white neko. They are always there…” Shikichi muttered. “How could you see them?!” Keiko said, shocked. “You forget I'm a bat, don't you Keiko? I have very advanced vision. Unlike you and SoYuhn. But we're at my street, I gotta go!” Shiki turned around and ran down Lobelia Lane. Keiko Jogged towards her, “Shiki! Wait! There are so many things I still need to… know…” It was too late. She had already disappeared into the darkness.
Keiko sighed and turned around. Her and SoYuhn walked down the main street in darkness. “I think she's hiding something… don't you?” Keiko sheepishly asked SoYuhn. The bunny girl just nodded. “I wish I knew what though. I think it's to do with Furritronics.” SoYuhn said. Keiko just `hmhd'.
The Girls got to the door of Kraux Bay apartments. Keiko pulled out her key and unlocked the door. “HA! Beat you to it!” Keiko said slipping her keys back into her pocket. SoYuhn sighed and placed her keys back into her bag. “It's just because I have to undo my bag.”
Keiko laughed as the two girls walked inside. They both checked their mailboxes. “Junk, junk, junk, a letter from mom, and junk.” Keiko said tossing the envelopes into the garbage. “Wait!” Keiko reached into the garbage and pulled out a letter. “It's from Furritronics.” SoYuhn was currently checking her mail. “I…I got one too. Let's read it” Both girls ripped the envelopes open, while they got onto the elevator. Keiko's eyes grew wide as she read what the letter said.
Dear Ms. Hakai,
It looks like you and your friend stumbled upon something we didn't want you too see. Or know about. That doesn't please us. Please come to the Furritronics building at 3pm tomorrow and ask for Amako Miyoka. She will straiten things out. Show up, so we don't have to make drastic measures.
Sincerely,
The Furritronics Staff
Keiko held the letter in her paw, her eyes closed. “Mine says the same... Except it has my name...” SoYuhn whispered. The elevator chimed. They had reached their floor. The both stepped out and headed in different directions. “SoYuhn?” Keiko said to the bunny girl, “Call me in a bit, I need to talk to you about this.” SoYuhn nodded, and they both headed into their rooms.
