(A Few Months before Rei's arrival)
Usagi Tsukino opened her eyes slowly and heard the faint steps of her
brothers and sisters. Hatsue, her sister peeked her head into the room
and her little blond curls bounced adorably.
"Morning sweetie", She said and opened her blanket so the young one
could crawl it. "Are you okay?" The girl nodded and her green eyes
looked big. Her eyes narrowed. "Are you sure?" And the girl nodded NO.
"What's wrong?"
"I wet the bed again", Hatsue whispered in fear. At four she had
developed this problem suddenly and Usagi knew why. After her bedtime
she wasn't allowed to come out of her room, it was because of HIM.
"HATSUE!", A voice yelled and the two jumped. Walking out to the
hall they saw that their stepfather, Kabuo was in another rage of his
again. His eyes were black and his tanned skin was burning red. "You
wet the bed again, didn't you?!" Ikuko, their mother came into the hall
carrying the baby, Maya and was followed by Jiro, Shingo and Yuuichirou,
her brothers. "DIDN'T YOU?!"
The girl began to whimper and under his huge fist began to tremble
in fear, she had felt this all too familiar pain. How afraid she was.
Usagi knew that Hatsue was most fragile of her siblings and the one
most subject to their stepfather's "moods".
"It was my fault", Usagi said. "I-I let her drink some juice before bed"
Immediately the man was upon her and his breath chilled her. Her knees
shook and Usagi could not help but sweat. "What do you expect when
she's not allowed to use the bathroom after eight because you're so
DRUNK that any sound drives you crazy?" THWACK.
And she felt the searing pain of his slap. But she could not fear it
but just ACCEPT it. The swelling rose but she stood her ground waiting
for the next one and wondering how she could cover the one that was
already brusing her ivory face.
"Clean the mess up!", He said and slap her again. And again. And again.
Usagi found herself on the ground. The tears stinged her wounds and
looking up at her brother Yuuichirou she saw her own pain in his eyes.
Standing her face wounded and her legs weak Usagi nodded. "That girl is
the worst of the bunch, Ikuko" Walking off he left the family standing
in the hall.
It was another morning.
**********************************************************************
"Really Usagi, sometimes I don't know why you can't keep your mouth
shut", Yuuichirou said. "You know after me he hates you the most. The
son of a bitch..." Usagi sat on the toilet as her brother cleaned her
wounds and lectured as was his routine. "You know everytime you talk
he'll find a reason to get you"
"He was going after HATSUE!", Usagi said loudly and her eyes filled
with tears. "It's not her fault she can't control herself. She didn't
grow in pain, WE did"
"Usa, how could anyone hurt your pretty face, our father's face", He
asked and shook his head. "Well you've got work in an hour, don't you?"
She smiled through her pain, how much he looked like their father,
Kenji. The same dark hair and eyes, for a moment he flashed in
Yuuichirou's eyes. A small picture of him lifting her in the air
as a child.
"Yeah", She replied in a daze. "Another day at the market" The corner
store where she worked was owned by an old man that lived in Tokyo
for years. Her mother and the family were frequent buyers and since
he knew her he hired her quickly. "I'm gonna help mom with breakfast"
Walking through the small house Usagi entered the kitchen and saw
that her mother had almost finished. Taking the baby she sat her
in the rickety highchair. Maya looked like her mother, with the
dark blue hair like the sea at night and those hauntingly pretty
eyes.
"Usa baby, please don't do that anymore", Ikuko said as soon as
she finished cooking. Sitting next to her daughter she smoothed
Usagi's hair and fixed her collar. "I understand that you're trying
to help Hatsue but yelling at him just brings his temper out. I can't
watch you get hurt anymore"
"Than leave him", Usagi said firmly and looked in her mom's eyes. Fear
flickered in them.
"It's not that easy", She replied weakly. Usagi saw how her mother would
always look over her shoulder as if Kabuo would be there ready to hurt
her. Usagi would never be like that, she wouldn't live in fear of
anyone.
"Yes, it is", Usagi told her and got up to kiss her mother. "I'm going
to work" Her mother smiled and inhaled deeply. "I love you mama"
"I love you too sweetie", Her mother responded and the girl left.
Ikuko stood up to clean and the tears of sorrow filled her eyes. "Oh
Kenji, I wish you knew how much Usagi is like you"
**********************************************************************
Donning the apron she wore Usagi sat on the counter and was quickly put
to work as customers filled her register. The store was famous for it's
fresh produce, the owner had a friend from the warehouse who made the
deliveries quickly and daily.
"My little bunny! How are you this morning?", Mr. Hoshi, her boss
said. The man was small with a balding head and a mustache, he wore
a light shirt and working pants that morning.
"The usual", She said grinning and her face hurt.
"Good", Mr. Hoshi remarked and did not say anything about her bruises.
He knew to keep quiet. She got back to work for a new customer came to
the counter. Taking the can she saw that they were dried apricots.
Her favorite.
"Good choice", She said to the customer not looking up. "That'll be-"
The person put the correct change on the counter. Handing the can she
looked up.
The eyes that were gazing at hers looked like her own. Full of the
same pain, joy, sadness and curiousity she was feeling. Everything
else seemed different, the black hair, the small smile, the ugly
jacket.
"Do I know you?", She asked and tilted her head. Her yellow hair
shone in the light, the stranger seemed mesmerized. His eyes
brightened though the rest of his tall self was neutral. "It's
like...I've met you somewhere..."
"I've been here before", He told her. "You just never noticed"
"Oh", She said looking down. Usagi didn't usually talk with anyone,
he must have thought she was such a snob. "Gomen" For she was
truly sorry, Usagi felt as though she had lost something by not
knowing him all this time.
And all of a sudden her calm, put-together life was missing something.
A piece of her she didn't know, she was almost afraid of it.
Looking up she saw that man was gone but he left his food. Taking it
she ran outside to see him getting into his car, a sportscar. He
stopped as she slowed in front of him.
"...You forgot something", She said breathlessly. Her hair blew in
her face and the boy slowly pushed the hair from her face, their eyes
meeting. Oh God, how familiar and soothing it was. "Thanks" Nodding he
got into the car and left as quickly as he came.
"That Mamoru, he's a good boy", Mr.Hoshi said as she walked in. Leaving
to clean an aisle, Usagi touched her face.
"Mamo-chan", She whispered and smiled. Usagi knew she'd see him again.
************************************************************************
Yuuichirou picked her up from work that evening and as they arrived
the sound of yelling perked up their ears. Approaching their house
they heard their mother's cries, Usagi felt her eyes well up but
Yuuichirou stopped her from breaking down the door.
"She's just a child, Kabuo!", Ikuko yelled. "Usagi is just going
through a phase. She's too much like her father-" THWACK.
"I told you not to talk about him anymore, Kenji is dead!", Kabuo
screamed and Usagi couldn't stop from crying. They were fighting
about her.
"I'll KILL him!", Usagi cried. "The bastard!"
"Stop", Yuuichirou said quietly. "You can't go in, it'll just be
worse" He looked at the ground and she sneered at him.
"You're starting to sound like her", Usagi whispered in anger and
turned to leave. "If I can't help than I'm out of here, I can't listen
and ignore it like you!"
Leaving her brother on the porch she walked off crying her tears of
frustration. After a few blocks Usagi stopped and went into a small
alley. And there against the wall she sobbed.
She didn't know that someone was watching. Looking up she was face to
face with Mamoru. Usagi felt her breath rise as she felt him come
closer. What was he doing there?
"Mamoru-" She was cut off as their lips met and a sudden but sweet kiss.
It was followed by a trail of kisses that went from her neck to above
her chest. And her jacket fell to the ground as the rain began to pour.
A heat rose from them making no difference that they were soaking wet.
Nothing mattered but him.
Lifting her against the wall their eyes met once more and she knew
what would happen. She looked shyly down and Mamoru tenderly lifted her
chin. Her tears fell for she for some reason was still crying. Her hair
matted against her she clench her teeth as she felt a sudden pain. It
was followed by a pleasure she couldn't understand and in one night
she had lost her heart and her innocence.
And suddenly time just stopped for them.
Realizing what they had done they stopped and reached for their
clothes embarassed at their brashness. She had never done anything
like this before. For goodness sakes the last boyfriend she had was
in middle school and he had been going through a voice change. This
boy/man Mamoru was at least eighteen.
"I am so sorry", He said quickly as they fixed themselves up. "I
don't know what happened, I didn't know what I was doing-I'm SO
sorry" His voice was deep and the way he talked was sweet, sincere
in his apologies. "I'm such an idiot"
"It's okay", Usagi said calmly though she was shaking inside. What had
she given up? "We just pretend nothing happened"
"Did you know what I did?", He asked and the two sat on the ground.
"This was your first time, wasn't it?" She took his hand and entwined
it in hers. Usagi nodded, inside something had accepted it, as it was
fate that led her there.
"I knew from the moment I saw you that you would change my life", Usagi
said and smiled. "It doesn't matter if I never see you again or if I'm
not in love with you, I will always remember this moment. The romance
of it and your face" She pushed his hair from his face as it drooped
from being wet. Getting up Usagi made herself presentable. "I've got
to go"
"Will I ever see you again?", Mamoru asked somewhat hopeful. He smiled
at her.
"Maybe, maybe not", Usagi said. "I like to have a little mystery to
myself" They laughed breaking the tenseness of the moment. "It might
just complicate things--and I don't want to fall in love with anyone"
"Neither do I", He replied. At least they had one thing in common.
A silence followed and she coughed.
"I'll see you around", Usagi said and turned to leave.
"Wait-" She turned to looked at him. "What's your name?"
"Usagi Tsukino", She informed him and grinned. He nodded approvingly.
"Cute", Mamoru said. "Goodbye Usagi"
"Goodbye Mamoru", Usagi responded. Whatever that means.
************************************************************************
A month had passed and Usagi never saw Mamoru after that. After they
had seperated she had snuck back home and Yuuichirou who lived at the
bottom half of the house let her sleep in his room that night. Sitting
in the bathtub that night she had contemplated and speculated of the
many effects this might have on her. However she didn't not prepare
for what was about to go down.
"Okay Usagi", Yuuichirou said as they sat waiting in his room. "If
it's blue you're pregnant and if it's pink then you aren't" Reading
the box Yuuichirou scratched his head confused. "If it's purple,
fushia, or emerald green, go to a doctor" She would've done this with
a girl but she didn't really have any friends. Usagi spent her school
days at work or at home helping her mom.
"You jerk! It doesn't say that...does it?", Usagi said nervously and
she swatted him. How could he be such an ass?
"How could you do it Usa? Do you even know who this guy is?", He asked
concerned. "What will you do if you are?" Yuuichirou was also afraid
of the fact that they would have to tell Kabuo.
"It's time" Walking into the bathroom she quickly walked back out. Her
face was pale. "It's blue" She sat on the bed and put her head in her
hands. "Ohmigod it's BLUE!" Usagi moaned as she felt herself sinking.
"What do you mean, it's BLUE?!", Yuuichirou said loudly. "I'll kill
the guy who did this" She looked up at him and scoffed.
"Ha, we're gonna have to find him first", Usagi responded.
***********************************************************************
It was on that afternoon that fate had dealt Usagi the right hand.
Sitting at the counter as usual she was astounded to see Mamoru
walk in and was surprised that after her long take off from work
due to morning sickness he had come on her first day back.
Seeing her Mamoru looked joyful but his face remained unsmiling
as usual. Her heart ached thinking of him with his hair wet
and his bright eyes that night. Mr. Hoshi waved to him as he
assisted a customer. Mamoru walked calmly to the counter and
put down a can.
She did the only thing she could do.
She smiled and rung him up.
"The usual, eh?", Usagi asked and his eyes followed her movements. It
was clockwork the way they acted around each other. Taking his reciept
she handed it along with his change. Beaming another smile, she winked.
"Have a nice day"
Unbeknownst to Mamoru as he looked at his reciept a two-word message
was written on it. She saw him turned to look at what she had scrawled
simply and elegantly on his paper.
'I'm pregnant'
The can dropped and he turned to her without picking it up. His face
was pale.
"Customer complaint?", She asked comically, Usagi laughed on his
unbelieving face. Walking from behind the counter, she picked up
the can and walked him out.
"You're pregnant?", He asked outside.
"Listen Mamoru", Usagi said seriously. "I don't want your pity, I
just wanted you to know and not to find out by anyone months later"
Her head lowered. "I-I don't know what to do, my brother knows and I
d-don't know how to tell my parents, if you want to pretend this never
happened it won't be a problem-"
"Usagi, believe or not I've been trying to find you all this time, I
knew something was wrong", Mamoru said as they sat edge of the sidewalk.
"This is why you haven't come to work in weeks, isn't it? I came everyday"
She was crying now, he was being so unbelievable sweet, it would've
been easier if he just shook her off. "We're having a baby"
"We're?", She asked suspiciously.
"Contrary to your belief I do care", Mamoru said. "I want this baby,
I want to see it run and play and laugh and have everything I never
had, that is if you'll have me as this child's bumbling, nerovus
father" She laughed.
This wasn't happening.
"And us?", She asked.
"We're not involved, we're not in love but we're friends and that's
enough", Mamoru concluded. "Do you want me to come with you to tell
your family?" She took his hand and shook her head no.
"I'm glad you're here, at least this child will know it's father", She
said sadly. "Not like me"
************************************************************************
Sitting at the table Usagi knew that now that she was alone with her
mother and Kabuo to tell them. She knew that she was shaking horribly.
Ikuko felt her forehead worried.
"Usa, are you alright?", Her mother asked. "Are you sick?"
"I'm pregnant", She whispered and looked down.
"I didn't hear that come out of your mouth!", Kabuo said and stood up.
Grabbing her shoulder he pulled her hair so she would stand up. "YOU
LITTLE BITCH! I knew it, I knew you were shacking up with some stupid
kid, who is it?!" As she stood silent his anger rose and his fist met
her small face. Usagi let it go and screamed. "TELL ME!" He slapped her
again and Ikuko covered her face crying as the other children ran to
the kitchen.
They watched and each time she was hit the cries became louder and
even shriller. If Ikuko begged for him to stop it became harder but
Usagi never let him touched her stomach. Not her baby. The blood from
her cuts dripped to the floor staining it a bright red.
"YOU SAY SHE'S NOT BAD AND LOOK AT HER. KNOCKED UP!", He said in rage.
"You let Kenji do the same thing, the apple doesn't fall far the tree,
does it?" Her face was swollen and she believed at the moment she was
blind in one eye for it was pratically closed up. "Get out of my house"
"What?", She said in tears, she was trapped. "Mom? Do I have to go?"
She said it so innocently that Ikuko could only cry.
"Just get out Usagi", Ikuko said looking down. No explanation. She
searched for a way out and only found that she was being kicked out
of her own home. Her brothers and sister cried silently as they
watched the whole scene unfold.
"Please...I don't want to go" Though she hated it here, it was her
home, everyone she loved was in this house. She needed them but she
couldn't stay, not anymore. Her lips shook as walked out of the kitchen
and simply put her jacket on.
"Don't come back", He sneered. Without any of her belongings she left,
it was about time.
************************************************************************
Mamoru opened the door and saw a small figure standing in his doorway.
Wearing her jacket Usagi had put on her hood trying to avoid attention
as she walked to her bruised face. Her lip was trembling and her breath
was raspy, tired and sad.
"It's me", She said. "I looked for your address in the phone book and
then I-I c-came here" Usagi felt so cold, everything around her was
dark, foreboding.
"Come in, how did it go?", Mamoru asked her and led upstairs an
protective arm around her. The big hood hid her face pretty well.
"Not well", She answered and took her hood off. His face twisted into
a look of horror at her face, Usagi's eye was dark purple and on one
cheek was a cut and on the other a huge swelling, the bottom lip was
cut. He felt his own heart begin to hurt. Taking off her jacket he saw
that bruising on her arms were turning a blue green. "My stepfather
didn't take very well" Her eyes welled up with tears. "I got kicked
out of my house-"
Usagi burst into tears.
"My mom didn't even stop him", She sobbed.
"I don't want you going back there, Mamoru said and took her hand.
"Stay here" Her head shot up. What? She couldn't just stay here with
a boy she didn't know, and the feelings between them were practically
uncomprehendable.
This was absolutely INSANE.
But what could she do?
Wiping her eyes Usagi nodded. "Okay, I'll stay"
************************************************************************
"Mamoru, can I sleep with you?", Usagi asked the following night. The
wind scared her, it was louder as if it was telling her that what she
had done was a bad. After a phone call to Yuuichirou she had gotten
her clothes and though her brother said not one word to Mamoru, he
knew the he approved, she was safer there. "Honestly, I've never sleep
by myself, I share a room with my sister Hatsue" Smiling he nodded
okay and opened his blanket to let her in. She felt safe as she crawled
in and he remarked on how she looked like a bunny coming out of a hole.
"What's wrong?", He inquired as the sat next to each other. She looked
at him and her lips trembled.
"I miss my mom", Usagi said and tears fill her eyes.
"I miss mine too", He answered. "I can hardly see her face sometimes"
"What happened to her?", Usagi asked and in the moonlight she saw that
his face showed no emotion.
"She died long ago", Mamoru said and she leaned against him. "That's it"
She knew to not ask him, he would tell her when it was right.
"My dad died, he had a accident at work", She told him biting her lip.
"It wasn't his fault, a fire broke out in the factory he worked in,
he was just too far from the exit" They were quiet for a moment. "Our
fate is different, we'll make it different..." It was if someone else
was speaking in her voice.
"...If not for us, then for the baby", He said finishing her sentence
and they grinned. "I know you more than you think" She felt that she
could be always open and honest to Mamoru. Usagi never had to worry,
he cared and in turn they would find their way, not afraid of anything.
She had never been so happy.
************************************************************************
The letter came in her seventh month and as they sat in some new fast
food place called Taco Bell, Mamoru read the letter to her and she
could tell that the way he gripped her hand tightly he was upset.
"You have a sister?", She asked and held his hand tighter. Putting
the other hand on her bulging stomach Usagi caressed it lovingly. He
had told her of his life months ago and she remembered how somber he
became as he told her. Sometimes he was like that and when he was
Usagi would hug him tightly uttering the words everyone wants to hear
"Everything will be alright". He put a hand on her stomach also.
"Didn't you know this?"
"Honestly I'd found out a few months before I met you but she's almost
an adult and probably adopted", Mamoru reasoned. "It's an unbelievable
story about how it all happened"
"Don't you want to meet her?", Usagi said hopefully. It would be nice
for Mamoru to have his sister to love and take care of. It would be
nice to see a smile on his handsome face, how she hoped the baby had
his eyes.
"Yes, what if she doesn't like it here?", Mamoru said. "Rei, that's
her name, she's probably got a mom and dad, a bunch of brothers and
sisters and a boyfriend to boot, we can't let her give that up"
"We'll just have to find out when she comes", She responded. "Admit
you want her to come" Usagi teased him and Mamoru cracked a gorgeous
smile. "She'll stay in the other room, won't she be thrilled to find
out she's gonna be an auntie" He felt a renewed hope around her.
"Okay! Let's see what we can do, I called the Department of Social
Services and they said that they've began paperwork...even if she
lived with a family they would take her out since I'm a blood relative"
He sighed. "I don't want to that"
"And if she's not adopted than we can be the family she needs", Usagi
told him. "The family WE need"
