MAKING SACRIFICES

Serena yawned loudly and was ready to go back to sleep when the smell 
of pancakes caught her nose. I'm starving,she thought to herself and 
got up to stretch. Opening her eyes she looked around Darien's living 
room. The memories of last night made her smile faintly. Humming the 
song they danced to,she washed herself up in the bathroom.After that 
she entered the kitchen to see Darien setting a table up with utensils
and a array of foods.
"You really know how to wake a person up?", She said and he smiled at 
her than kissed her on the lips.
"I knew you like to sleep late", He said and sat down. Then he pulled 
her from her waist and let her sit on his lap. "So I thought the best 
way to wake you up was to get you with only weakness...food"
"Thanks", She said and looked into his eyes.Giving him a soft kiss.
"Little do you know that I started waking up early a long time ago!"
"It seems that your son is following the tradition", joked Darien and
Serena punched him playfully. After another kiss they sat down to eat.
"What you gonna do today?"
"Well I was thinking of taking Alex to the arcade", Serena said as she
gulped down a stack of pancakes and some sausages. Then swallowing her
food began to drink a tall glass of orange juice. "Then get some ice
cream" Her mouth was full and her cheeks were puffed up like a
chipmunk. "I'm gonna make myself so fat from your cooking"
"Don't worry about your weight. You never gain a pound anyways", He
said and looked at her. Somethings will never change. "San Francisco
certainly did not change your appetite"
"Nope", She answered. "Wild cows couldn't change my appetite!" They 
both laughed as Alex entered the kitchen. Looking from Serena to Darien 
he broke into a heartbrakingly cute smile and promptly sat on a chair.
"Morning Mama, Morning Darien", said Alex looking at the pancakes
hungrily.
"Go ahead Alex eat up", Darien told him and Alex with his fork grabbed
the remaining five pancakes drenching in syrup. Laughing he observed
that Alex had also inherited Serena endless appetite, no doubt!
"Alex sweetie pie", She scolded lightly. "You didn't even leave Darien
some"
"Sorry", He said sheepishly. For a moment Darien saw himself in Alex 
but quickly shook it off.
"Don't worry about it", Darien answered and looked at his watch. "I ate 
already cause I know how your mom's stomach works. Plus I have to leave 
soon. I have to go make my rounds at the hospital"
"I always knew you'd become a Doctor", Serena said and look down at her 
food. "It was always your dream" She thought if the time when she 
decided to leave. Darien wanted so badly to become a doctor and to help 
others. She knew that it wouldn't happen if he found she was pregnant 
with Alex and so she went to San Francisco.
"I had other important dreams", He said and smiled at her. She smiled
back while Alex watch the two. "Well I have to go. You two have fun 
today"
He then kissed Alex on the top of head and kissed Serena on her 
forehead.Looking at her meaningfully and telling her by telepathy,
*This was how it was meant to be*. She looked up at him agreeing.
"Bye you two", Darien said as he closed the door behind him.

Serena sat in the arcade playing a game against Alex. She wasn't
as good as her son but she had some tricks. Using them she got ahead
but at the end was beaten by her young son. A man about Darien's age
watched her. It was Andrew, Darien best friend and Serena's old crush.
He no longer work there but own the arcade. He was surprise to see 
Serena after all these years with a little boy who look fimiliar to
him but he just couldn't pinpoint who he reminded him of. Walking up 
to her he heard her laugh  congratulating the child on his victory.
"Serena?", He asked and she turned around. Once she realized who he 
was, Serena threw her arms around him. "It's been awhile"
"Andrew it's great to see you", She smiled. "How's Rita?"
"Pregnant with our third child", He said proudly and looked at her now 
quite believing it was her.
"Third?!", Serena exclaimed and put her arms on Alex's shoulders. "Well,
I'm gonna have to catch up with you but till then meet my pride and joy 
Alex". She smiled down at him.
"Nice to meet you Alex", Andrew said and smiled at the child. "How bout 
I give you some quarters to play more games while I talk to your mom?"
"Thanks mister", He said and ran off while Serena smiled fondly.
"My God Serena. Is that really you? This tall sophisticated blonde 
beauty? Not to mention a mom?"
"Yes sure is", she assured him. "A mommy as well but you! You're still 
hanging around here"
"Ha!", he said. "I happen to own this place"
"Really?", Serena said. "That's great"
They continued the conversations happy to see one another and still 
could believe the achievements they made. Andrew with his own business
and Serena a teacher's aide in a very good music school. Both parents 
and happy. Andrew looked at Alex and still had that nagging feeling in
him. Serena had to go and before she left she hugged Andrew goodbye. 
Before the left the Arcade, Alex looked up at him and smiled. A flash 
of lightning hit him and he realized who this kid reminded him of.
"Darien...", He gasped.

Serena and Alex walked hand in hand to Serena's house. When they opened
the door Ilene came greeting them.
"Serena, you have a visitor", Her mom said. "Where were you?" Serena 
caught her mom's eyes and looked at her. Ilene looked at her wondering
if an old romance was sparking up. Deep inside Ilene wished her 
daughter was still in love with Darien. That way she could stay in 
Tokyo and they would be togther. But Serena had a life in America and
had to provide for Alex. She was proud of how her daughter had 
straightened herself up.
"Really who?", asked Serena and her mom pointed into the living room.
Serena walked in and to her surprise Seiya sat on her couch. "Seiya!"
,she yelled and hugged her dear friend.It had been awhile. "What brings
you here?"
"I have great news", He said to her. "Come we have to talk in private"
Serena told her mom she was going out. Alex was in the backyard playing
catch with his Grandpa.
"Do you know where the Ice Cream Parlor is?", He asked and she led him
quickly there.
"What's the news?", She asked in anticipation.They sat on spinning
stools on the counter.
"Well the news is...", Seiya began.

Darien realized it was lunch time and was starving. He had eaten 
breakfast but not as much as Serena. Darien smiled to himself.
He would go to the Ice Cream Parlor down the block. Maybe Serena
and Alex would be there...

"I'm dying!", Serena squealed. "Tell me!"
"Okay", He said and inhaled. "Serena, my dearest friend,...I'm engaged"
Seiya smiled at her as he looked at her O shaped mouth gaping at him.
"Oh my God!", She cried and hugged him tightly. "I'm so happy for you.
Congratulations! Who is it?"
"Her name is Danielle", He informed her. "I met her after you left.
I know that it's a hasty decision but everytime I look into her eyes
I know it's the right thing"
"Hasty decisons are the best", She said. "Oh I'm so happy for you. I 
could burst!"
"Well don't burst yet", He told her. "I haven't asked you to be Dani's
maid of honor"
"Really?", She gasped. "You're asking me?"
"Dani is always listening talk about how you've been there for me", He 
answered. "She wanted you to be there with us cause you're special to 
me and to her also"
"I'd love too"
"One more thing , my friend", he said. "I moving to Tokyo next month.
Dani has a business here"
"Oh",she said sadly. She would miss her dear friend.But she knew that
she was deeply happy for him.
"But", he continued. "The Conservatory needs a new singing teacher and
I have told them of your talents and skills.They've hired you as the 
new teacher! You'll get twice the pay now! Enough to learn to be a 
designer!"
"Ohmigosh!", She screamed and hugged him furiously. "Thank you I'm so
happy" Serena closed her eyes thinking it was glorious dream. When she
opened them she gasped to see Darien standing in the doorway. A look
of anger, pain, and sadness in his eyes before she could call to him
he turned and walked away. She pushed Seiya away and ran to Darien.
"Darien it's not what you think" He turned around and looked at her
with anger.
"How could you?", He yelled and drew the stares of people."I trusted
you and you're there holding someone in your arms. I can't believe you,
who is he? TELL ME!"
"You don't understand", sobbed Serena loudly. Tears running down her
face like waterfall. "Seiya is my friend"
"Sure he is", He yelled back at her. "Is he Alex's father?"
"No", She said softly in sadness which he took as guilt.
"I can't even look at you anymore", He whispered in a fallen man's
voice. "Goodbye Serena"
"Darien listen to me", She pleaded with him putting her hand on his
shoulder. He shook it off and walked away. "Alex is your son" She said
but he couldn't hear for he had turned the corner. A crowd had gathered 
and looked at a heartbroken Serena go back into the resturant. As she 
entered a silence had come over the place. Seiya sat in a booth with a 
long brown hair beauty. Dani felt a tugged in her heart for the sobbing 
woman. Seiya got up to hug the saddened woman. Dani joined them 
embracing the broken spirit of a woman.They took her home and she 
rushed upstairs crying softly so not to scared her child. Alex was 
scared though. He listened to Seiya explain the story and even the 
child could understand the simple mix up. He walked upstairs and opened 
the door to see his mama crying softly on the bed.Large pools of tears 
in her eyes. Taking her hand he looked at her with love. A sense to 
protect her came over him.
"Mama don't cry", He said quietly and she looked at him.
"I'm sorry baby", She answered back. "I've made a mess of myself"
"Mama cry all you want I will be here to help you like you help me", He 
said in a strong manner. "You still have me Mama"
"I know, my darling", She said getting up to wiped the tears away. 
"You're the most important thing to me" This fill her with a bit of
happiness to have her baby care for her.

Darien opened the door to his apartment and slammed the door open.
He kicked anything in his way and look at the table where Serena sat.
Without thought he threw the table over making plates break and the
food fall to the floor. In the living room he threw anything in his path.
He didn't realized how loudly is was yelling or how many tears went down
his face. Finally tired and run down he leaned against the wall sobbing.
Once again in another house a pretty young woman leaned on her wall
sobbing, both of them with a deep pain running through their hearts.

Two days later Serena and Alex were in the airport preparing to leave 
for San Francisco in a few minutes.This time Serena would say goodbye 
the proper way.The Senshi and The Tsukino's had come to say goodbye to 
her and her son. Serena looked at all of them with sad tears in her 
eyes. She looked at her family. Her dad looking sadly at her, her mom 
had tears going down her cheeks and Sammy looking down trying to not 
be so sad.
"Mom, Dad, Sammy", She whispered and they all made a group hug holding 
each other tightly. Alex joined in and his Grandparents kissed him 
and his uncle held him. The senshi watch this heartfelt moment and 
hated the thought of them having to say goodbye soon. Serena then 
walked to each of them.
"Serena", Raye said trying not to cry. "The last time you left I never 
told you how much I cared for you. Well I do"
"Thanks Raye. It's always good to hear a friend say that. Especially
your best friend". They hugged tightly and Serena moved to Ami.
"Come back soon my friend", She said sadly and hugged her. "There's
always a place for you here" Looking into Ami's eyes she smiled sadly
at her.
"Remember that we love you Serena", Lita told her crying and grabbed
into a crushing hug.
"I'm gonna miss you like crazy", Mina told her and tapped Serena's nose
making her laugh."Have faith always."
An announcement was made and Serena was to board the plane with Alex. 
She took one last long hoping Darien would be there but sadly he wasn't.
She sighed and turning around getting one last look at her family. The
trip wasn't a waste but she didn't know if she could ever come back.

Darien sat in his house eating a bowl of cereal. His face was unshaven
and hair in disarray.He wore boxer shorts and shirt with a blue robe
over it. Without warning the doorbell rang and he opened the door.
Outside stood Seiya and Darien flared with anger but was too depressed
to supress it.
"Hi, I'm Seiya. A friend of Serena", He said and Darien sat on the 
couch looking down.He was still angry at Serena it had been almost
two weeks since she left.
"A friend", He said sarcastically and laughed bitterly. "What do you
want?"
"I'd like to explained my story to you", Seiya said. "Darien I know you
think that there is a thing going with Serena and me. I admit at one
point I would had like that. But I'm engaged Darien"
"Than what was with all that shit in the Ice Cream Parlor?", Darien
asked and closed his eyes trying to shut up the memory in his head.
"Let me finished", continued Seiya. "When I explained to Serena that
I was engaged she was overjoyed. But what you saw was her thanking me
for new job as the voice teacher in the Conservatory" Darien looked up
listening to the story realizing what he had done. "Serena was so happy
because now she could afford classes on interior decorating. Darien you
have to realized that Serena loves you and no offense to you but you
acted like a jerkoff. Still she loves you and the love she has for you
is the kind you don't see very much these days. The unconditional kind.
I see the look in your eyes and I know that you love her the same way.
Don't let your pride get in the way of happiness. You only get one
chance." Darien nodded and got up to get himself cleaned up. Before
he did he shook Seiya's hands.But a thought occured to him. He frowned.
"I love her but I don't know how to get her to forgive me", He realized
in despair.
"Do the simplest thing: Follow your heart"
With that Darien got up to get the woman he loved back.

The doorbell rang in the Tsukino household. Ilene opened the door and 
was surprised to see Darien Chiba there. Ever since the thing with 
Serena, Ilene had not seen Darien. Now there he was.
"Mrs.Tsukino I was wondering if I could get Serena's address and phone
number in San Francisco", He asked politely.
"I don't think she wants to hear from you", Ilene said angrily. "You 
hurt her horribly, Darien. I'm not sure I want you to see her"
"Please Mrs.Tsukino", He pleaded with her. "I love her and I realized
that everything that was ever important in my life had some connection
to her. I know that I'm not worthy of her but I won't stop until I find 
the highest way to prove that I love her. I need her and she needs me. 
I will try my hardest to get her to love me again but I can do this 
without you. So please Mrs.Tsukino I need to find her. Can you tell 
where she is?" Ilene was in tears at the boy's plead of love for her 
daughter and was touched immensely.
"I'll do you one better Darien", She said."In two days Me, Ken, Sammy, 
and Serena's friends are going to San Francisco. She's having a show at
the Conservatory and we want to surprise her. Come with us."
"Thanks Mrs.Tsukino", Darien said and hugged the lady.
"Don't worry about it", She answered. "Just make my daughter happy"

Serena yelled commands to the stagepeople. It was the night of her show
and she had managed to Keep her mind Darien free for awhile. Seiya and
Danielle had come back to help her out and for support. Serena entered
her dressing room and looked around. It suddenly seemed useless to her
for she missed her family and friends. Even Darien....she kept the
pictures of their time at the carnival in a frame. She missed him
terribly. Suddenly she was sobbing on her dresser.
"It's opening night why the tears?", A voice asked. Turning around
she saw the Senshi and her family smiling at her. She ran into their
arms. "You guys came"
"Of course we did. We wouldn't miss your debut", Mina said smiling at
her.
"Not for anything in the world", Everyone else agreed.

The show was beginning and Serena watched from backstage organizing
all the children doing their acts. Some sang and some danced. Seiya was
hosting as his last obligation and then from there on Serena was the
new voice teacher. Soon the show was coming to an end when Seiya
started to introduce Serena.
"I'd like to introduce the new voice teacher, Serena Tsukino. She has
done a wonderful job of making the show a complete success", Seiya told
the Audience. "She also has a wonderful voice so without furthur ado
Serena Tsukino!"
A wild applause rang out and Serena came out from backstage. What
Serena didn't know was Darien stood on the other side of the backstage
watching her every move. She looked majestic wearing a long white dress
with a sash around her waist. The skirt flowed to the floor and her  
hair was curled in ringlets at the tips with white roses in them.
He held his breath looking at her. The piano began to play...

Seiya's long fingers played a heartbreakingly,sad tune. She was 
nervous but her family was there and her friends. Also to her it 
was like Darien's presence was there. His hands on her shoulders 
encouraging her. Closing her eyes she thought of her only love and 
her only pain and with that began to sing:

In her mind she was kissing him, holding him, and for the moment
he was there in her soul and in memories. She wished so hard in her
mind for him that it hurt. Opening her eyes she was surprised to see a
standing ovation for her. Flowers were being thrown from everywhere
and she smiled. Her family and friends clapped and yelled for her
obviously proud. Tears in her eyes blurred her vision for she wished
that he was there embracing her.Her heart was so full and happiness
and pain at the moment she thought she would burst.
Suddenly she heard a clinking noise and looked down to see a red rose 
with a white ribbon. She bent down to picked it up and on the ribbon 
was a gold ring. There was a diamond in the middle entwined around the 
diamond was a crescent moon and a rose. It was exquisite but the design 
was strange. She had never seen anything like it.Wait...crescent moon...
rose. The moon was her symbol and the rose was his. All of a sudden it
hit her. Darien was here, watching her. She looked around and a hand 
touched hers. Darien. He was there smiling at her and holding her hand.
"What are you doing here?", She asked.
"Serena", He began. "I let you go once and I almost did it again. I 
love you Serena and I wanna be sure that I can be here with you every
day of my life making up for what I did to you"
"Really?", She said looking up at him.
"Yes, anything", He told her.
"I want you to marry me, Darien Chiba", She said and he smiled at her. 
Putting her arms around his neck. "I want You, me, and Alex to be a 
family. Like it was meant to be"
"Your wish is my command", He said and went on one knee. "Serena 
Tsukino, will you Marry me?"
"Yes", She whispered.In the midst of the noise and applause they kissed 
sweetly.

Later that night Serena and Darien laid on the couch watching the
fire in the chimney. It had been a long and glorious night the first
of many for the young lovers. Alex had gone to sleep, happy and excited.
He had a daddy now. Serena reached for an album under the coffee table
and Darien watched as she pulled out a picture of Alex.
"Darien", Serena said as she handed him the picture. "Tell me who does 
he look like?"
"Well he has your eyes", Darien said and looked some more. "I swear he
could be a smaller version of-me"
"People were always telling me he looked like his daddy", She said eyes 
down trying to keep from smiling.
"Serena is Alex my...I'm his ...", He stammered and looked at her. She 
held Alex's birth certificate. Handing it to him he looked intently but 
didn't see anything.
"Look at his birthday", She said.
"Febuary ninth", He said and looked puzzled.
"Go nine months back"
"That would be June ninth", He answered quietly.
"Yes June ninth, our anniversary"
"So that means Alex is my..."
"Yes Alex is our son", Serena said and he broke into a grin, he had 
never been so happy. "I take it you're happy" He was and gave her a 
passionate kiss to prove it.
