Debate Topic - End of Evangelion

Initial Post

Submitted by: Brendan- In the End of Evangelion, Shinji is finally able to be brave and make his own choices by refusing to become part of the whole in Lillith and returning to Earth/reality with Asuka to become the new Adam and Eve so that life on Earth is not wiped out completely. (Or maybe he did become part of the whole... hmmmmm)

Follow-ups

Submitted by: Sasami- This may have nothing to do with the initial post, but I have had some interesting thoughts about Shinji and Asuka, after the 3rd Impact. Like Adam and Eve, Shinji and Asuka are the only supposed ones on Earth. If they were to have a child, and that child to have a child, couldn't history repeat itself? Also, Shinji and Asuka are left next to a vast sea of LCL. Like in Episode (err..can't remember) the one where Shinji has a 400% synchro rate and he loses his Ego Border, the LCL has the substances of his body in it, altering it to something like the "primitive sea of Earth". Over time, the LCL could convert to the Ocean, and the world could be reborn. Would this be possible?

Submitted by: Rabia-chan- I think it has nothing to do with being brave. Shin-chan just went along with his philosophy of "not running away" by joining into a whole like the others did. Therefore, basically his actions was not bravery but he just did what he always did without thinking about what would be best for himself. I think what would have been really brave is if he realized that "not running away" is not always the right thing to do and for once do what he wants to.

Submitted by: Kaworu Nagisa- Now I believe what happened in E of E wasn't exactly the third impact but the human completion project in its final phase. Throughout the series the angels try to meet with adam to supposedly start the third impact. So if what happened in E of E was the third impact then what was that formation with all the eva's for? I believe that SEELE was trying to focus all the energy released by the third impact to increase the evolution of man so fast that only the energy that exists in all life remained. They used Rei as a kind of supervisor so as to organize all the 'souls' into a well organized unity. Then somehow the wishes of the individual souls were fulfilled in that strange alternate reality they were all in. Rei was able to show Shinji all the different realities because she was the supervisor of all the souls. great theory huh? Oh yeah I LOVE REI-SAMA!!!

Submitted by: Neville Ko- The end of Evangelion. It is all our imaginations after all.Remember in the T.V. series, sometimes Shinji or other characters started to dream about anything at anytime. May be the movie is one of the dreams. Or we can say one of the author's dreams about the teenagers today.

Submitted by: Quamzin Kravashera- Has anyone seen episodes 25 & 26 of the TV series? I know E of E lovers would rather wish they didn't exist. I think, however, that E of E is not complete without eps 25 & 26. At the end of ep 25, Misato (or her image) tells Shinji that what he wanted was a closed world where no one but himself can exist. That certainly explains why he went about causing Third Impact. If we consider eps 25 & 26 as a sort of "dream sequence" where Shinji tries to make sense of his own existence (instead of having Rei explain everything), then the true ending of Eva is when Shinji finally comes to terms with life (the big applause scene) and chooses to return to Earth instead of becoming one with Lilith (E of E). As for why Asuka was there, I guess she simply came to terms sooner than Shinji, got "killed" temporarily, and separates from Lilith because she did not want the false perfection Lilith offers. I have a theory that each of the 17 angels represent one aspect of human nature (Lilith is a "complete" human), but have managed to decipher only four:
- Sachiel: Blind fury. By going berserk to defeat him, Shinji accepts the "beast" nature of humans.
- Shamshel: Fear this is sort of obvious, the old "conquering your own fears to beat the enemy" routine.
- Ramiel: Distrust of "others". It actually lashes out with a 10-click-long particle cannon when approached by EVAs (which are semi-Angels). Plus Shinji has to learn to trust Rei and, to some degree, his father (Rei's comment on the long escalator-slap!) to beat this angel.
- Kaoru: Now, this is the weird one Kaoru can only be "love". I mean, think about it! This is an Angel who tries to understand the human race and chooses to die rather than allow them to be destroyed (sniff). BTW, Kaoru's death is almost a retelling of the death of Christ, isn't it?

Submitted by: Third Children- I think that in the end, it was a sense of lonliness that drove Shinji to make that decision. In the real world there was pain for him, not a sense of being alone. In the 'Ocean of LCL' the wasn't the individualism that he was used to. In the end he chose the pain of fear and rejection over the shallowness that is 'Instrumentality'.
On another note to Sasami's posting. The 'Ocean of LCL' on earth is the composition of the world's people. In my belief on this, when the souls, now orbiting Earth, want to the same individualism, they too can return (Having their bodies reformed out of the LCL. So, in a sense, Shinji and Asuka really aren't the new 'Adam and Eve'.

Submitted by: Robyn Bennett- I've only seen the television series, so don't think that my post is dumb or anything because I haven't seen the movies. I think that at the end of the series third impact hadn't occured, but instrumentality had been implimented. Shinji decided that his life was worth living with others instead experiencing the pain of lonliness. In the episode where Rei sacrifices her EVA and herself to save Shinji, the "Angel" talks to Rei and shows her the pain of lonliness. Nobody wants to be alone, and in the end, Shinji was just running from that pain too. This post probably seems rambling and incoherent, and STUPID to anyone who saw the movies, but I'm tired now, I only got 6 hours of sleep in the last couple of days.

Submitted by: jomatakeru14- I'm not sure I can believe that Shinji and Asuka are the new Adam and Eve. If humanity evolved into a higher state, and God allowed it, why would he choose to have 2 people 'de-volve' back into the previous imperfect form to start that imperfect form anew. It seems to me that Asuka and Shinji must have evolved yet in their new reality they are interacting.

Submitted by: Nate- Am I wrong, or doesn't Shinji strangle and kill Asuka at the end of E of E?? Anyways, if this is true I see the movie and 25/26 endings as like two sides of a coin. In the TV Shinji realizes the joy and acceptance of lif e and individuality, etc. It's more than that but im not sure how to express it any further... In E of E , especially with the last line , it is the other side of the coin of life / individuality after he is alone, and strangles asuka, he realizes the punsishment and pain that he must suffer, li ke all of us. I personall like the TV ending better because Im an optimist, but they definitely "complement" (Haha) each other well. In terms of which is true, though "I'm going to have to say 25 / 26 with E of E being an example to show the other side, not really true or a dream, just there.
thats it, well really theres more, but lets just leave it at this series dug so deep into my thoughts and feelings that i wouldnt or couldnt begin to express the depths of them Bye.

Submitted by: Moiraine Sedai- ) How are all you people getting acess to they movie!?!?!? oh well anyway I only saw the TV series ending too and all this talk about 3rd impact...I don't get it! I didn't think it ever happened, only I read the back of my tape and it said it did. If anyone can clear this up for me PLEASE e-mail me. But personally I think Shinji is very brave and the only brave person to actually confront himself and realize what he really is and how he can change himself. If you think about it, it seems like no one else has ever done that.

Submitted by: Malachy- In response to Nate's post: no, Shinji does not kill Asuka. He starts to because he still remembers the sequence while inside of Lilith when he was fighting with Asuka. He can't bear to look at the one person he loves, while she feel nothing but hate towards him. However, when Asuka reaches up and Shinji's face, he realizes that she must really love him after all and he stops.

Submitted by: ayanami clone 00- Near the end of the moive yui asks shinji if this is what he really wants. when she does I think she is asking shinji does he want to stay in his own reality or does he want to join everyone in the third impact. He decides that he wants to stay in his own reality not the third impact. I don't think that Asuka is really there with him. it's what he wants reality to be. Remember Yui says that reality is what you want it to be and this is what he wants to be with someone who hates him just as much as he hates himself. i really don't think Shinji ever comes to terms with his self hatered and asuka is someone who is not fond of him. I think he would rather put up with Asuka's hatred then his own self hatred. everyone asumes sense he and Asuka are toghter that She love's him but if this is all just a reality that shinji creates that doesn't have to be. If you asume that Asuka does love Shinji that would mean shinji must face the one thing he doesn't want to his self hatred. ! As to why Shinji stops himself from killing Asuka it is so he won't have to face his own self hatered. It just doesn't seem right to have this happy ending because when eva was written Anno was still indepression and this work was ment to reflect that a happy ending just doesn't seem to fit. A lot of people think that all shinji wants is to be liked and cared for but deep down I think Shinji just doesn't want to deal with his own self hatred thats why he goes to his father better to deal with hatred of someone else then your self.

Submitted by: rui yi- I think, though haven't had the pleasure of watching the damn movie, (not out in Australia yet), that Shinji was just being his usual, pathetic, cowardly self. He could of become part of the whole but he wanted a world where no one could cause him pain so he wanted everyone dead...stupid logic. AND Rei being the good mother let hiim have his desire along with the Asuka...
Pretty sick in a way...incest all along the generations.
