Well, u've gotta know something about Fushigi Yuugi (best translated as "Mysterious Play," before you explore the shrine, so here's the basic story line (This starts off with summarizing the first one or two episodes, and then sort of tells the rest of the basic story plot.)
Once upon a time, there were two best friends named Hongo Yui and Yuuki Miaka. At the library one day, Miaka thinks she sees a red bird, so she and Yui follow it to some Document room, where they find a book titled "The Four Gods of Heaven and Earth," in a forbidden section of the library. Not knowing that the book itself was an incantation and that whoever read it would get absorbed into it, they started reading, and a red light began to surround them. Suddenly, they found themselves in a completely different world. First off, the girls faced trouble by being found by a bunch of guys who wanted to sell them. However, a man named Tamahome, who's got the sign of the "ghost" or "monster" on his forehead, saved them with his superior martial arts skills. While looking for money to pay the stranger, Miaka does not notice that Yui disappears and the stranger leaves.
Thinking that the guy kidnapped Yui, Miaka tries to find him in the village. After talking to various sources and then being in trouble again, Tamahome comes and saves her, and after some begging, agrees to help Miaka find Yui. The two soon get arrested for causing a disturbance in front of the passing emperor and Miaka's strange disappearance back into her world for a few seconds (where she learns that Yui is back in the library, reading the book.)
The emperor hears of Miaka's body being surrounded by a red glow before she disappears and her strange clothing, and tries to find out more about her. Tamahome and Miaka escape from the jail but Miaka gets lured away from him by the smell of food. She meets up with the young emperor, Hotohori, who she mistakes for a beautiful girl at first. They talk for a while, but Tamahome gets captured by guards and Hotohori reveals his true identity. He states she is "Suzaku No Miko" (Sukazu is the country's god, and a miko is basically a shrine maiden of priestess, so "Suzaku No Miko" is shrine maiden to Suzaku) from a legend which promised when the country (called Konan,) was in times of great need, a girl would appear from another world and save them. The girl needs only to gather seven seishi (or protectors of the miko,) each marked with a character on their body and some special ability, and she is able to make three wishes which will be granted by Suzaku. Turns out Tamahome and Hotohori are both seishi. Miaka agrees to become "Suzaku No Miko" so that she can get three wishes to pass her high school entrance exam, get food, and become popular.
Well, Miaka needs to only find five more seishi and she's done, right? There is one catch. Yui ends up being "Seiryuu No Miko." Seiryuu is the blue dragon god of Kotou, opposing country to Konan. That means Yui and Miaka are like, enemies. Things get complicated after that, with both mikos racing to find their seishi and defeat the other.
