Hiragana
Hiragana is one type of Japanese writing system that only shows pronuncition whereas Kanji, Chinese charactors show meanings. There is another writing system that works just like Hiragana and mainly used for foreign loan words, that is called Katakana.
Hiragana has only 48 letters such as follows:

When you put " or o just besides certain letters, pronunciation changes like this:

Also, if you put a small sized YA, YU or YO, you can get more variety of sounds as follows:

With a little TSU, you can put an accent.

When you find , you shold read the previous vowel longer.
