In a house in Kanagawa there lived a young boy, named Koshino, aged 17, asleep curled in his bed in his white-washed room. The sudden ringing of the alarm clock caused the said boy to startle into wakefulness before groaning a complaint as he slammed the contraption off. A few seconds later he sat up, eyes still half-opened and mind still half-muddled as he scratched at his dark mussed hair. A languid yawn came out of his mouth before he got out of bed and shuffled barefoot towards the bathroom outside at the end of the corridor. When he reached the door to the bathroom, a cluttering sound came from within. He tried to open the door to see but it was locked.
"Who's in there?" Koshino grouched.
"Wait up!" a panicked feminine voice told him from behind the door.
Koshino's brow scrunched at that oddly familiar voice that he knew did not belong to his mother.
"Who-?"
Suddenly, the door opened revealing a young woman with a mass of hurriedly brushed curls and a pretty face flushed with heat.
Koshino immedietly recognised his older cousin, surprised to see her at his house at that early hour.
"Motoko-"
"Sorry cousin no time to chat gotta go," the young woman said in one breath, swinging her handbag onto her shoulder and giving a peck on Koshino's cheek before zipping down the corridor and disappearing down the stairs. Belatedly, he heard the sound of the front door closing with a bang before he realised what has just happened. Motoko have probably stayed up late at her workplace again and as usual, rather than take the train back to her house, she stayed over at Koshino's which was nearer. She must've overslept this morning but Koshino doubted his cousin's harried appearance would make a difference on her attractiveness.
Since they were kids, Motoko was always the popular one and as she became a woman, the men started pouring in. More often than not, Koshino would always have to help her in fending off unwanted suitors everytime she stayed over. He appreciated his cousin's beauty and personality like any other favourite cousin but it made him shake his head in disbelief at some of the suitor's attempt of wooing.
With a sigh, his stepped inside the bathroom and began to go about his business. A few seconds of contemplating made him decide on taking a shower as he was feeling sticky cased by the summer heat from last night.
After the shower, finally feeling refreshed, he toweled himself dry and brushed his damp hair back, knowing that the soft strands would fall in its characteristic centre-parted style that he has been using since he was a child. When he began to rummage in the cabinet for his deodorant spray, to his consternation he found it missing. He frowned, wondering where it has gone to when he chanced upon an unfamiliar black can of deodorant spray called 'Phoenix'. He opened the cap and sniffed. It smelled alright to him. Very nice, in fact, that he wondered why he hasn't heard of this brand before. With a shrug he sprayed some under his armpits and little bit over his chest and neck before he walked out of the bathroom with only a towel around his waist. Back in his room, he put on a pair of shorts and a white polo shirt before going downstairs for a short breakfast.
Downstairs, he found out that the house was empty except for himself. He knew his father was already at work at this time and his mother was probably out shopping for groceries. It was the summer holidays for the highschool students and Koshino would've woken up later to enjoy the bumming aspect of the period if not for the summer job his mother has insisted on him taking.
On the table his breakfast was already laid out for him to eat with a note from his mother. After wolfing down his food, he placed his dishes in the sink before walking out of the house with a bagpack slung over his shoulder, not forgetting to lock the front door before going to the small storage at the back of the house to fetch his bicycle.
As Koshino was about to mount his bicycle, a grey cat suddenly leapt out from the bushes that was growing beside his house, with a hiss.
"Go away, you miserable feline," Koshino growled under his breath. Ever since the cat came to the neighbourhood, it never took a liking to him even after he tried to be friends with it. It would always hiss and meow in a threatening manner, sometimes attempting to scratch Koshino if the boy was near. However, today, it surprised the boy by suddenly becoming quite still, sniffing the air quietly before it began to purr in joy. Koshino nearly jumped back when it approached but instead of clawing at the boy's exposed leg, the cat rubbed its furry body onto Koshino's leg lovingly as if it has just met it's favourite friend.
Koshino blinked in surprise for a moment before smiling as he bent down the stroke the soft body. After patting the cat and delighting on the affection of the animal, Koshino reluctantly got onto his bicycle and rode off onto the street.
It was past seven in the morning and Koshino has about 30 minutes before his shift starts, which was plenty of time. The dark-haired boy took a deep breath, enjoying the fresh air and seeing a few other people also out, either there for an early stroll or an early jog. One such early riser was jogging past him, and without Koshino knowing it, the jogger twisted his head to stare at Koshino as he went by the boy, not realising that a metal post was in front of him before he ran into it.
As the young jogger lay in a dazed heap on the concrete, a person who looked like a boy of aged five with a tail and big pointed ears sticking out of his funky hairdo leapt onto the fallen jogger enthusiastically.
"Mama! Are you hurt!?" the cute alien cried, glomping at the young boy.
The brown-haired boy immedietly regained his wits and proceeded to attempt to dislodge the thing clinging to his chest.
"Let go of me, you pervert!"
With a growl, he tugged the alien off of him and punted the small being into the air.
The tailed-boy bounded easily towards the wall of a building and landed smoothly to the ground on his booted legs. The childishly innocent expression disappeared into a dangeous look when distance was maintained.
"If I wasn't so imprinted with you, I would've killed you a long time ago, Kyiko!" the little boy snarled showing the jogger his sharp fangs.
The brown-haired boy snorted. "Let's see you try it then, Cosmos!"
The alien began to advance. Closer and Closer. The boy called Kyiko, quickly prepared himself for a real fight.
Suddenly the alien's large red eyes acquired a shimmer and it was not surprising for the boy to find himself being glomped again.
"Mama! I'm sorry!" cried the alien, clinging onto the teenager's leg.
The brown-haired boy shrieked.
A few metres from the scene, Koshino cycled away, oblivious.

Moments later, Koshino reached an intersection and he stopped to allow the cars to go by. Suddenly beside him, a yellow FD sport's car stopped, also waiting for the way to clear. Koshino took a quick glance, noting the dirty-blonde haired driver who was at that moment using his small compact mobile phone, not sparing attention to anything else except for the party on the other line. The guy was handsome and rich. Koshino turned away with jealous resentment and at the same time imagining himself as the person behind the wheel. He guessed would have to save up more than a year's wages to get a car that cool. As he let his mind wander, the young man in the car turned his head towards Koshino with wide eyes that held awe.
When the road cleared, Koshino cycled away, leaving the young man dumbstruck at the intersection. A sudden honk made the boy turn his head around to see that the yellow sports car had not moved an inch from the intersection, hence making the driver of the car behind it to complain very loudly with more honks followed by foul curses. Koshino turned back to the front with a snort, guessing that the expensive car must have somehow broken down.
Koshino finally reached his destination a few minutes later and after securing his bicycle in the sports complex's parking area, he walked in and headed towards the counter to register his name for attendance.
"Ohayo Gatteau-san," Koshino greeted as he signed his name on the open book placed at the counter.
The beefy 20-something trainer who was in charge of the registration that morning made a cursory glance at Koshino before going back to his morning paper.
"Ohayo," the trainer mumbled back but that was before something made him look back up to stare at Koshino in wonder.
"Ohayo, Koshino-kun," the man drawled, "You are looking as good as always."
Koshino nodded, not hearing the tone before he lifted his head up from the registration book the second time to look at the trainer. The man who Koshino rarely spoke more than two words per day to was looking at him oddly.
The dark-haired boy blinked. "Err... thanks..." he said, not knowing what else to say, before dropping the pen on the book and walking quickly away towards the tennis court where he was scheduled to work.
Grabbing a spare racket from the locker he then made his way towards his new student for the week. Upon reaching the person he was surprised to see that it was Fujima Kenji, the captain of the Shoyo highschool basketball team.
"Fujima? You're my new student?" Koshino asked.
The brown-haired player smiled. "It seems that I am, Koshino-san." Fujima then blinked. "Ano... should I call you Koshino-sensei, then?"
Koshino chuckled lightly. "Koshino is just fine, Fujima."
Fujima grinned. "Yosh."
"Have you played tennis before?" the brunette asked.
"No, I'm afraid not. My mother wanted me to try something else other than basketball." Fujima made a face. "It's either this or polo."
"Ah. What made you pick tennis?"
"Horses smell," Fujima replied with a huff.
The shorter boy snorted in amusement before he motioned for Fujima to stand on a spot in front of the mechanical ball server. Standing beside the boy, Koshino began to demonstrate to his new student on how to handle the racket and on how to serve the ball appropriately. Fujima was a quick learner and without further instructions, Koshino went ahead to use the machine. Using the racket in theory and in practical was a different matter altogether and Fujima realised that when he began to feel the strain of the exercise. The tennis balls were heavier than he expected and he had to exert some strength to hit them as they flew towards him.
Koshino frowned when he realised that Fujima's posture was changing. He strode up to the boy and placed his palm on Fujima's back.
"Don't slouch too much," Koshino instructed as he pulled the boy's shoulders back before he re-positioned the boy's arms from behind, "And remember to swing like this."
Fujima bit his lip in concentration "Huh? Oh, like this?"
"Yeah, just like-"
Suddenly, Koshino was aware of the body in front leaning heavily against him.
"Fujima, your stance."
"Oh, right," Fujima mumbled as he pulled himself away from Koshino.
"Now, remember to keep your arms like this-"
Koshino frowned again when Fujima again began to lean back towards him, effectively ruining the perfect posture for the second time.
"Fujima-"
"Oh, sorry," Fujima laughed nervously, "I really need some help, huh?"
"Yeah," Koshino replied uncertainly before he let the other boy go.
A few minutes later, the boy again lost his posture making Koshino groan inwardly in frustration.
Fujima blushed under the sheen of sweat on his skin. "Gomen ne, Koshino. Can you show me how it is done again?"
~~~~
Koshino packed the equipment back into the company's locker as he remembered how bad Fujima Kenji's first tennis lesson went. He shook his head in disbelief. The boy never got his posture right for more than three minutes at a time that Koshino had to time and time again instruct him on how it was done by personally re-positioning his limbs and back. It was peculiar how the Shoyo captain behaved and it also made him blush in embarassment. In particular instances, Fujima kept leaning back towards him that he practically clung onto Koshino when he was being held and also Koshino caught the other boy twice nearly about to nuzzle him with closed eyes and a dreamy smile on the boy's lips.
With a sigh, Koshino closed the locker door shut before signing out with one of the female instructors who was looking at him in curiosity.
It was already three o'clock in the afternoon and the sun was unbearably hot. Koshino made a detour towards the mall for a quick break from the heat while deciding to also do some browsing in a sports store that he frequently visited for any new stocks. As he entered the mall, he breathed a sigh of relief as the cool conditioned air blew across his sweaty and flushed skin. When he looked around he saw some new posters and banners being erected or hung for what he guessed were for the summer promotions. It seemed that a few new young Japanese stars would be showcasing their talents this weekend by what he could gather from the posters. A group of girls were already clustered around a particular poster of a blonde singer called Wakui and after a quick disinterested glance he walked away heading for the elevators.
"Hey, you're that singer aren't ya?"
The other teenager brushed back his blonde hair and grinned. "Hai. Wakui Mayu. Sorry about just now."
"Koshino Hiroaki." Koshino looked down from the glass elevator and smiled. "Running away from your fans, eh?"
"Huh? Oh shit!" the boy cursed, trying to make himself as small as possible. When he realised that it was a lost cause he turned towards Koshino with a disgruntled look which suddenly turned into appeal. "Hey, you're tall. Can I possibly hide behind you till we reach the floor that you're headed?"
Koshino arched his eyebrow but then nodded, allowing the blonde singer to squeeze behind him. Fortunately, the elevator wall behind Koshino was opaque, therefore making the other boy stay hidden from the people outside.
"Thanks, I appreciate this," the muffled voice of Mayu was heard from behind.
"No problem," Koshino replied before asking, "Where are you headed, by the way?"
"I've got a date with a friend of mine from school. We agreed to meet at the fourth floor," the other boy answered.
"I'm stopping at the third floor-" Koshino was informing him when suddenly a pair of arms made their way around him, fingers gripping him tightly on his shirt.
"That's alright..." Mayu sighed.
Koshino blushed. "Is this necessary?"
"Absolutely."
The taller boy made a small jump of surprise when Mayu's nose rubbed against his neck and when a hand managed to find its way under his shirt, he yelped in shock.
Suddenly, the ding of the elevator was heard, prompting Koshino to begin a struggle to pull away from Mayu but with the way the singer was still holding onto him Koshino was not able to get vary far.
"W-Wakui-san, let go!" Koshino implored.
"I don't want to," the other boy said, gripping onto Koshino more tightly.
At that moment a cough came from the front and Koshino again blushed bright red when he saw a spectacled boy looking at them in surprise.
"Mayu? Are you alright?" the stranger asked, staring at the blonde who was still latched onto the basketball player.
"Never better, Yoshita." Mayu grinned before he nuzzled at the area under Koshino's ear. "I think I'm in love."
Koshino made a choked sound while the spectacled boy's eyebrows arched in surprise. The boy was again about to open his mouth to say something when suddenly a mob of girls pushed past him to get to the blonde singer who was too enamoured with Koshino to notice. That was until Koshino managed to pull himself away from Mayu and quickly stepped out of the elevator and into freedom. Concerned for his friend's safety, the spectacled boy slipped into the elevator just as it was about to close.
Koshino gasped, trying to slow his rapid-beating heart caused by what has happened a few seconds ago. If it weren't for Mayu's fans he wouldn't have gotten away and he was for once thankful of crazy fangirls. Even though Mayu was kinda cute ....
Koshino squashed those thought away before stomping in anger towards the sport's store.
Inside the store, Koshino felt his mind at ease and began to browse around. As he was looking at the new Nike brand shoes, he felt a tap on his shoulder from behind. When he turned around, he saw a teenager with short wavy brown-hair looking curiously at him.
"Hm.... a boy," the young man murmured, leaning forward towards Koshino for a better look.
Koshino frowned. "What do you want, man?"
"Oh well," the other teenager sighed, ignoring Koshino's question, "Let this be the first time for me."
"Huh?" Koshino frowned harder, not understanding a bit of what the boy was saying but he did get a shock of his life when the boy grabbed both his hands while another arm wound around him to clasp at his back.
"Wh-What do you think you're doing!?" Koshino yelped.
"Mikado Sanzeni, my pretty," the brown-haired teenager said huskily, staring at Koshino with his teal-coloured eyes, "The half of the golden pair of the ice-skating champions from Kolkhoz High School, enchanted to meet your acquaintence."
Koshino's face went red as he struggled out of the boy's decidedly lecherous grasp.
"Okay, nice to meet you too NOW LET ME GO!"
The boy tsk-ed in amusement. "Not until I give you a kiss that your luscious lips deserve."
"WHAT!?" Koshino yelped and before the boy's lips reached his, his fist swung. His fist connected and Mikado Zenzeni went sailing over the rack of clothes and into a basket of soccer balls with a satisfying 'WHUMP!'.
Koshino hmph-ed, rubbing his sore fist in irritation.
What's up with the guys today!? They keep hitting on me all day!
He turned around and was immedietly faced by the rest of the store's patrons.
To his alarm, they were all men.
And they were looking at him with wide starry eyes that reflected wonder, worship and some with a slight ... leer in them.
"Wow..."
"What a babe..."
"Hey dude, wanna go out with me?"
"You asshole! How dare you ask him for a date in that manner!"
"You're just jealous 'coz I asked first!"
"Forget about those two bozos, man! Go out with me!"
"No! I'll take you to better places! I'll give you flowers, wine and diamonds!"
"He's a guy you idiot!"
"One-on-one."
"R-RUKAWA!???"
Not being able to handle the attention anymore, Koshino ran out of the store as fast as his legs could carry him. Not caring to wait for the elevator, he bounded down the stairs until he reached the ground floor and raced towards the exit. Preoccupied he was trying to make sure that he was not being followed, that he did not notice a tall young man walking towards him until Koshino bumped into him.
"Itee..." winced Koshino rubbing his forehead.
When he was sure that no concussion was forthcoming he felt the grip of a hand and with dread, he looked up from the hand that held him until all the way up the shoulders. When he saw who it was that held him he made a squeak of terror.
"S-Sendoh!"
Of all people to run into today it was Koshino's (bad) luck that the person had to be the mega flirt of Ryonan High.
"Koshino-kun? What's the matter," the spiky-haired player asked in concern.
Koshino struggled out of Sendoh's grasp and jumped a good few feet away from the taller boy.
"Err... ah... n-nothing..."
"Well, it seems that there's something going on," Sendoh said, crossing his arms across his chest, "Are you alright?"
Koshino blinked while still keeping a wary eye on his friend. "A-Ano... are you alright?"
Sendoh arched an eyebrow. "I am. But I'm seriously thinking that you're not."
"You don't feel like glomping or giving me gifts, do you?" the shorter boy hesitantly asked.
Sendoh pouted. "C'mon, now, Koshino-kun. I'm not that much of a flirt."
"Thank God," Koshino sighed
Sendoh huffed. "Now will you tell me what's going on with you?"
With a weary tone Koshino relayed what has happened to him all day as they walked towards the area where his bicycle was parked. When he was finished with his story, Sendoh was laughing in disbelief.
"Th-They... wh-... Rukawa, too? AHAHAHAHAA!!"
"Urusai!" Koshino growled, "It isn't-"
"AH-CHOO!"
Koshino turned to look at his friend in surprise.
"Gomen," Sendoh sniffed as he took out a handkerchief from his pocket, "I got the cold since last week. It's getting better, don't worry. I just wish I can smell again. It's ruining my appetite."
"Eat some strong mints," Koshino suggested, "It may help clear your nose."
"Hm, that's not a bad idea," Sendoh agreed, "Ok. Wait here a sec while I go buy some."
"Hurry up!" Koshino said loudly.
"I will," Sendoh called back as he jogged away, "Holler if any more guys are hitting on you!"
Koshino mumbled a curse but true to his worries, the men passing by him began to take interest even when he was just standing there making the most threatening look he could muster.
When Sendoh came back a few minutes later, Koshino was busy fending off the unwanted attention of two handsome dark-haired men, each arguing for the affection of the annoyed basketball player.
"But, Sir! I saw him first. You've already got Xun," complained one of the brunettes with his hair slicked back.
The other man with his long hair tied up in a high pony tail said smoothly, "Jingwan's monopolising him all the time. Anyway, I'm your superior. You're supposed to back off to me."
Sendoh quickly made way towards his friend and pasted a smile on his face before placing his arm around Koshino's shoulders.
"Sorry guys. He's taken."
The two men looked at Sendoh in surprise before one of them said, "We'll fight you for him."
As the two teenagers stared at them, wondering if they were serious, the short-haired man was making a motion to grasp something from his hip. When his fingers encountered nothing but air, his eyes blinked in stupification.
"We left our swords back at Xun's, you dolt," the long-haired man reminded him dryly.
The other brunette scratched his head in thought. "Oh yeah. Well, I'll go get it and when I come back we'll have a duel to the finish!"
And with that he went away as quickly and silently as a passing shadow. The long-haired man followed suit.
"Tu Fang! Wait! Don't you dare take my demon sword!"
"I don't think I want a sword sucking blood off of my face, sir."
"Hey! Xun said I still look handsome!"
Sendoh and Koshino stared at the quickly disappearing duo in amazement before looking at each other in silence.
"Should we really wait for them?" Koshino asked boredly.
"Shyeah. Right. Weirdos," Sendoh replied, rolling his eyes.
"So, are you going home now?" Koshino asked his friend.
Sendoh shrugged. "I guess so. Hey, can I hitch a ride with you on your bike?"
Koshino did a quick mental calculation before nodding. "Sure, just don't move around too much. You're heavy."
"Don't worry," the tall player assured his friend with a grin.
Koshino got on his bicycle and before Sendoh joined him, the tall boy popped a mint in his mouth.
On the ride home, Sendoh chatted cheerfully, his minty breath reaching Koshino's nose.
"How's your cold?" Koshino asked as they turned a corner.
"Better," the boy behind him replied, "I think my nose is clearing up now."
"That's good. Hey, we're here."
"Huh? Where?"
"The street to your house."
"Oh, thanks."
"... Sendoh..."
"Hai?"
"You need to let go now."
"Hm?"
"Sendoh- SENDOH! LEGGO!"
"But I like holding you like this."
"NOOOOOO!!!!"
~~~~
After effectively kicking Sendoh off of his bicycle, Koshino sped away, literally letting Sendoh eat dust. Back home he locked the door and bolted all the windows to the worry of his mother.
As he was about to stalk upstairs to his room the phone rang and Koshino picked it up, automatically barking at the caller.
"WHAT?"
"Geez, cousin. What's gotten into you today?"
"Motoko?"
"The one and only," the cheerful voice replied, "Hey, can you do me a favour? I left my deodorant spray at your house this morning. Can you send it over 'cause I really need it for tonight."
Koshino rested his hand on his hips as he replied, "Okay, what does it look like?"
"Black and it's called 'Phoenix'."
The boy blinked. "'Phoenix'? That's yours? I think I may have used it this morning."
The young woman on the other line screeched, "You didn't!"
Koshino stammered, "I-I didn't know it meant a lot to you!"
To Koshino's surprise his cousin began to laugh. "No, that's not it. Ah hell, come over and I'll tell you. And I think I have an idea why you're all so uptight today."
"I doubt it," Koshino said wryly but Motoko was laughing again.
"Oh come on over and let's see."
"Alright. Ja ne."
"Ja."
After Koshino put down the phone, he went upstairs to grab the deodorant spray and dumped it inside his backpack before going back down to tell his mother where he was going to. With a quick jog to the train-station, he made it there with a few seconds to spare before the train arrived.
As the train pulled away from the station, he saw one of the Kainan players, Kiyota Nobunaga, who nodded at him before walking to where he was seated.
"Kiyota." Koshino nodded.
"Koshino," the other boy greeted back.
"Where are you off too?" Koshino asked.
"Back home. You?"
"To my cousin's," Koshino replied.
"Ah."
"Kiyota."
"Ah?"
"What are you doing?"
The boy with the wildly kept hair looked befuddled. "Sitting."
"Why here?"
Kiyota scowled. "Why not? This is public transport isn't it?"
"Yes, but why do you have to sit so close to me? The train's bloody empty for Kami's sake!"
Kiyota chuckled in embarassment before proceeding to pull himself off of Koshino's lap.
~~~~
By the time Koshino reached his cousin's apartment, he had been hounded by two pimple-faced teenagers and an old man with a cane. Standing in front of his cousin's front door, he frantically rang the bell to which Motoko immedietly answered. As soon as the door was locked firmly behind him only then did he allow his legs to give away.
As Koshino sat gasping on the floor with exhaustion and fright, Motoko looked down at him with a knowing grin on her lips. "Guys chasing after you, huh?"
Koshino looked up at his cousin who was towering over him, in surprise. "How did you know?"
"It's my deodorant spray," the young woman replied, holding out a hand for him, "Guys go nuts over the smell."
The young boy sputtered, "You're kidding!"
"No, I'm not," Motoko grunted, pulling her cousin up while still managing a cheeky grin.
"My little cousin all grown up!" she chirped.
"And you didn't tell me about it before I came here!"
"Gomen ne," Motoko chuckled unrepentantly, "I was hoping that you'd get yourself a date along the way."
"That's not funny." Koshino scowled while rummaging in his bagpack for the deodorant. Upon finding it, he tossed the can over to Motoko as if it was a live snake.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang and without a word, Motoko went to answer it. As Koshino took a hesitant sniff on his arm, Motoko swung the door open to let the visitor in.
The person was a handsome young man with blonde hair and hazel brown eyes, wearing an Armani suit and a dashing smile. The man seemed to be searching for something and when his eyes alighted on Koshino, the smile turned sensuous.
"Takabatake-san, this is my cousin, Koshino Hiroaki. Koshino, this is my boss, Takabatake Roby," Motoko said introducing them to each other as she held onto the file that the young man just gave her.
Both of them made a courteous bow before Takabatake took Koshino's hand in his own.
"Enchanted," the man purred.
Koshino quickly pulled his hand away with a wince. "Err... yeah. Excuse me."
With an amused smile, Motoko bowed to her employer before running after her cousin who was making his way out of the room.
When they were out of ear-shot, Motoko giggled in delight. "That was so cool! Imagine that, the head of Nanno Department store coming onto you! All he did was flirt around with me. You must have something else going on. Either that or he's definitely more into guys."
"Oh joy," Koshino said sarcastically, not stopping for a second.
"Where are you going?" Motoko huffed trying to catch up with him.
When Koshino reached the apartment's bathroom, he growled at his cousin before closing the door at her face.
"To take a shower."
