THE CROW CRISIS

A FAR DISTRICT OF MEGALO CITY TOKYO, OCTOBER 30, 2039, NIGHTTIME
The rain had recently stopped in Megalo City. A person was running down the
sidewalk in a far district of Megalo City. The person was female and stood a little
over five feet tall, had bluish-green eyes, and short blonde hair. She was wearing a
light blue long-sleeved shirt, that zipped upped the front. She wore a green vest
over the shirt; she wore orange shorts with a belt, and black hiking boots. She also
had white stocking that came up to mid-thigh on her, and a backpack that was strapped
over her right shoulder.
She was happy, because she was going to see an old friend of hers that she hasn't
seen in over four years. His name was Devon Knight, and he was an assistant trainer at
a dojo when she last seen him. It was him that persuaded her to take a few classes in
Martial arts. At that time, Nene had a crush on him, but it was one that died quickly
because she knew that Devon had a girlfriend by the name of Cara Fiorani.
Nene and Cara quickly became best friends after they had met for the first time.
After that, all three of them did a lot of things together. The last time she saw her
friend, and his girlfriend, was when she was fifteen, and was practicing over at the
dojo he worked at. He had informed her that Cara and him were going to America for a
while to take care of some business.
She was sad to watch them leave, but they had constantly sent her letters telling
what they have been doing. It was one such letter that had made her happy. It was the
letter saying that they were back in Japan, and gave their address and the reason they
were here in Japan again.
As she got nearer, she realized that something was very wrong. As she was nearing
the building that she was heading to, she saw several AD police and ambulances there.
She feared the worst and ran over to see what was going on. As she was about to get close,
a police officer stopped her and told her she can't come any closer. No one notice a crow
land on the roof of an adjacent building and watch what was going on. It was then that Nene
saw and heard what had happened.
It appeared someone either jumped or was thrown the top floor of the sixteen-story
building during a robbery. The AD police was going around looking for clues and stuff.
The ambulance people were taking the body that was thrown off the top floor away. Then
another group of the paramedic's were bringing another person from inside the building that
appeared injured to the point of being almost dead. When the paramedic's passed her that was
when Nene got a good look at the body. She suddenly realized that she knew who that body was.
"Cara!" Nene shouted and broke free from the policeman's grip and started running over
to the paramedic's.
"Hey!" Said the startled police officer as he started after her.
Nene ran over to Cara's body and started crying. The Paramedic's and the police officer
tried to take her away and calm her down. Nene told them that she knew the person and wouldn't
leave. The police officer tried, but Nene wouldn't leave Cara's side. So the paramedic's loaded
Cara into the Ambulance and Nene sat down next to her as the ambulance drove off.
****
A little bit earlier, up on the sixteenth floor, in one of the rooms, were several police
officers going around the room looking for any clues. The one in charge of the investigation is
Leon McNichol. He went over to the officer that was gathering information and asked what he got
so far. The officer informed him that they had a homicide from a man being thrown out the big
window at the far wall, the woman was beaten and raped by several people, and the paramedic's are
looking at her at the moment. From what they found, only a few things were stolen. The officer
couldn't figure out why did this happen.
Leon, while he was listening to the officer's report, was looking around the place. The room
they were in was a loft type room, with several small windows and one big round window. Off to a
corner of the room, was a mannequin with a wedding dress still on it. When the officer was done
talking, it was then that Leon saw a piece of paper on the floor. He picked it up and read it over.
It was a wedding invitation for a wedding that was going to be held the next day.
"Who gets married on Halloween?" The police officer asked after he read the invitation.
"No one." Leon said as he handed the invitation to the officer and looked at the wedding dress
that was on a mannequin.
"We did all that we can here, we need to get her to the hospital, and quickly." Said one of
the paramedic's to Leon.
"Okay, take her." Leon said as he watched them put her on one of the gurneys and wheeled her
out of the room.
After he was done up in the room, he headed down so he could check in the on the woman and
see if she was able to answer any questions. When he got to his car, a police officer had informed
him that there was a person that claimed to know the female victim and went with her to the hospital.
Leon thanked him and left for the hospital.
ONE YEAR LATER
Nene was walking down a path in one of the few cemeteries that people could still be buried
in, early in the morning. The sky above looked cloudy and looked like it would threaten to rain
at any moment. In her hand was a bunch of several different kinds of flowers. She eventually
arrived at her destination and looked at the two head stones that she was facing. The gravestone
on the left said Cara Fiorani, and the one on the right said Devon Knight. She held up her flowers
and placed half of them on Devon's grave, and the other half on Cara's grave.
"Hey guy's, it's me again. Came to see how you two are doing. Work is doing all right I guess.
My extracurricular actives are doing great, I hacked into three new area's. They are still trying
to figure out who hacked into their computer system. There's a new member to the group I'm in with,
her name is Linna Yamazaki. She seems very good, and it is nice to have another person on the team."
Nene said as she kept telling them of all the latest things that kept going on around them. After
a little bit, a beeping sound was heard and Nene took out her communicator. "Yes?"
"There's a rouge boomer on the loose, you are needed." Came a voice over the communicator
that Nene recognized as Sylia's.
"Okay, Sylia, I'll get there shortly." Nene told Sylia and then turned off the communicator.
She then faced the two graves and smiled. "Well, it looks like I'm needed. I hope that the killers
are found, it really sucks that you guys were killed. I'll see you two later, bye bye."
Just as she was turning around, rain started falling down. Nene sighed as the rain started to
soak through her clothes. As she was about to turn around, she heard some flapping noises and turned
back to see that a crow had landed on Devon's grave and was cawing at her. As it stopped cawing at
her, she looked at it with mild confusion.
"What are you, the night watchman?" Nene asked. Not expecting an answer, she turned back and
headed over to Sylia's place in a hurry.
After the crow watched her leave, it then started pecking at the grave it was standing on while
the rain kept come down.
***
Later at nighttime, it was still raining pretty heavily. A crow was sitting on a tree branch
inside a cemetery, watching a particular grave. After a few moments, the ground where the grave was,
started moving. The ground looked like it was a beating heart by the way it was moving up and down.
Then all of a sudden, on one of the times the ground moved up, it kept moving up and a coffin
top suddenly came into view. The top of the coffin looked like it was pushed from below by someone,
but at the moment no one could be seen. Then a hand popped up and grabbed the side of the ground
and then another hand came up and grabbed the other side. Then a body came up and climbed out of
the ground and laid next to the hole screaming in pain.
The crow just watched as the person was screaming and just waited. The person had finally
stopped screaming and stood up, somewhat wobbly, and started stumbling out of the cemetery. As
the person, who is male, stumbled out of the cemetery, and into the city, the crow took to flight
and followed the person.
***
After the fight with the rouge boomer, Sylia had everyone stay for dinner. They were out on
a patio that was on a roof section of Sylia's store. Most of them were enjoying the meal, but Nene
was only stirring her food around her plate with a fork. After a while, the others had noticed that
she wasn't eating. They saw that she was a little down when she was fighting the boomer, and it
still seemed that she was feeling down yet.
"Nene, what's wrong? You seem a little down." Asked Linna.
"Nothing." Replied Nene glumly.
"It's not nothing, something is troubling you, what is it?" Priss asked.
Nene sighed in defeat, because she knew that her friends wouldn't stop bugging her until they
knew what was wrong.
"If you guys really want to know, it's because a year ago today, two of my friends were
murdered." Nene told everyone.
Everyone was surprised at what she just told them. After a bit more persuasion, Nene told the
story of what happened to her friends a year ago. After she was finished telling her story, her
friends were saying how sorry they felt for her. Nene accepted their apologies, and continued eating.
****
A lone man was stumbling through the alleyways; the dress clothes he was wearing were ripped
or torn in several places. Along the way, he had lost his shoes somewhere. The rain was really
coming down by that time, soaking his clothes. He finally got fed up and tore the jacket and shirt
off and threw them on the ground.
A crow landed on an edge of a dumpster and started sawing at him. The man stumbled his way
to the dumpster and opened the lid. The crow flew up to a balcony to get out of the rain. When
the man looked in, he saw an old pair of hiking boots sitting there. So he grabbed them and found
that they fit when he put them on. When they were on, the man heard the crow fly off and followed
it to where it was going.
The crow led him to an old run down section of the city and to a fire escape on a side of a
building. So he climbed the fire escape to the sixteenth floor and made his way inside the building.
The crow was hoping along the floor of the hallway and stopped in front of a door. The man walked
up to the door and saw that it still had police tape across it. So he reached up and ripped the
police tape off the door.
He then opened the door fully and the crow flew inside before he was able to get inside.
Once he was inside, he stumbled around until he came to a small table and placed his hand on it to
stop himself from falling. The moment he touched the table, a sudden pain flashed in his head,
causing him to stumble backwards until he lost his footing and landed on his back. It was then that
images started flooding into his head.
****
Cara was in the room, putting the final alterations on her wedding dress. She was humming
to herself one of her favorite melodies as she was doing her work. She was excited because the
next day she was going to get married. Now all she had to do was wait for her fiancée to return
from the store with their dinner. It was then that she heard a knock at the door.
“You either forgot your keys or your arms are full.” Cara said cheerfully are she went to
the door.
She was expecting Devon, but when she unlocked the door and turned the door knob, the door
was kicked open, causing her to land on her ass. She looked up and saw that it wasn’t Devon at
all, but four unknown men. It was one tall black man with a bunch of knives in his belt, a
Japanese man with long hair, another Japanese man with short hair that looked like he hasn’t washed
in a couple of days, and another Japanese man holding a piece of paper. The one man with the paper
seemed to be the leader and the paper she saw she recognized as the petition she started to not
destroy the block she was living on. It was signed by a lot of residents that wanted to stay
where they lived.
“What do we have here, some pitiful attempt to stop development. We can’t let that happen.”
The leader said.
Cara got up and tried to run away, but the other two Japanese men chased after her and caught
her before she was able to get into a room. They dragged her back kicking and screaming, and threw
her on the floor in front of the others. Before she could get up again, the black man held a knife
at her throat. As she froze up, the other men started ripping open her clothes. She knew they were
going to rape her, so she tried to struggle, but the black man had used the knife at hold her still.
Each of the men had one round raping her before Devon had returned. Devon knew something
was up when he saw that the door was open and he could hear noises that he didn’t like. As he
stood in the doorway, the sight he saw scared him. He saw four men around his girlfriend, and
it looked like they had beaten her while they raped her. As he stood there, he was able to
pick up their names.
“Cara!” Devon yelled when he was able to get his voice back and dropped the groceries he
had in his arms. He was about to help her when Tintin threw a knife that snuck into Devon’s
stomach.
Devon dropped to his knees and watched helplessly as the men were having their way with Cara.
Devon pulled the knife out and tried to make his way to help Cara. The one that was doing Cara at
the time told the others to take care of Devon. So Tintin, Skank, and Funboy came up to Devon and
started kicking and punching him. Once Devon was a bloody mess, Tintin and Funboy held Devon by
his arms as Skank used his gun and shot Devon three times in the chest.
Then it was Funboy that said that he knew what to do next as he picked Devon up by his hair
and dragged him to the window. The other two caught onto what was going to happen and started
cheering him on. Funboy picked Devon up and threw him out the window and watched as he landed
on the road below. After that, the four of them finished up with Cara and left the building.
****
During the flashback, Devon was reacting to it by unconsciously reacting to what had happened
to him. He had followed everything exactly until it came to the point of being thrown out the
window. He ran to the window and jumped out it, but he had grabbed the window frame to stop him.
He stopped his momentum and twisted back into the room.
As he landed, he looked at his hands as he realized that he had cut his hands on the broken
glass. He looked on amazed as he saw the wounds instantly heal themselves. What also amazed him
was that he hadn’t felt much pain when he had cut himself. After the wounds were healed, he
turned to the crow as to ask him what to do. The crow at the moment was eating a roach it had
caught. The crow finished eating and cawed at him and then took off out the window. The rain in
the meantime had stopped.
Devon knew what he had to do and walked over to the bedroom and then to the closet. He
opened the closet door and started searching through the clothes inside. He finally settled on
a black, long-sleeved shirt. He pulled it on and walked over to a vanity mirror and looked at
himself. On the mirror was a picture of him and Cara at a happy moment. It angered him and he
punched the mirror, cracking it in several areas.
It was then that he saw the theater mask that he had given to Cara, and when he touched it,
he received the flashback on how he had given it to her. When the flashback was over, he knew
what to do and started opening draws until he found Cara’s make-up bag. He dropped the contents
on the table and took out what he needed; he then proceeded to apply some make-up to his face.
He used a white make-up to totally cover his face and then he grabbed a black lipstick and
highlighted his eyes and drew a line over each eye. He then used the lipstick over his lips.
When he was done, he looked at a good section of the mirror and saw that he matched the theater
mask pretty well. He then waited for the crow to tell him what to do.
****
At the time, inside a second story game room bar, a man was looking out the window, with
binoculars, at the people rushing about to get where they were going and to get out of the rain.
The man with the binoculars settled on two girls in a school uniform, and appeared to be twins
about twelve years old.
“Mmmmm.” The man said looking until he was swatted in the back of his head.
“Skank! You did time for that kiddy stuff already. You want more dickhead?” T-Bird said.
Skank held the back of his head and turned to face T-bird. T-bird was walking back to the
pool table where Funboy and Tintin were playing a game of pool.
“Dammit T-bird, I’m just looking.” Skank said and when T-bird didn’t acknowledge him, he
turned his attention to what Tintin and Funboy were talking about.
“… You play the hand you’re dealt with, know what I’m saying?” Tintin said, waiting for
his turn to shoot.
“No. What the fuck are you saying?” Funboy said as he sunk a billiard ball into one of
the pockets.
“Look, if you don’t understand it …” Tintin started saying but was interrupted by Funboy.
“No. I understand it. It just doesn’t make any fucking sense.” Funboy said.
“Wasn’t about school for me, was about these.” Tintin said as he set the pool stick down
and held up his left hand, opened and his fingers spread out. He then grabbed one of his knives
off his belt and placed the knife on one of his finger tips, with the knife blade tip on his
finger tips, balancing it. He then reached down and grabbed another knife and started doing the
same thing with it on a different finger. “You know how when you’re a kid, you can practice all
day throwing cards in a hat? Or skate, or whatever you wanted to do?” He was working on the
third knife at that moment. “You have all day, you can do what you want, learn what you want,
and this is what I wanted.” Done with the third one, and going onto the forth. “I started out
clean with these. And with out school to get in my way, I just got better … and better … and
better.” He now had at that moment, five knives balancing on his finger tips, and they appeared
to be not moving at all.
“Fuck me!” Skank yelled out, which caused T-bird and Funboy to pull out their guns and
Tintin to drop the knives he had expect one in which he caught and had in a ready to throw
position. They relaxed when they saw it was only a crow that landed by the window.
“What the …” T-bird said confused.
“Damn! That’s the biggest pigeon I ever saw.” Skank said.
“It’s no pigeon you idiot.” T-bird said angrily as the crow watched them.
“Here birdy, birdy, birdy.” Skank said trying to call the crow to him. The crow suddenly
took off when T-bird fired three shots at it. Skank cowered since the shots were near him. When
he got back up, he saw that the crow was flying away. “Aww, T-bird, why’d you do that? We could
a had a pet. A black bird, too, pretty cool.”
“Whatever, I got to go.” Tintin said.
“Where you going?” T-bird asked.
“To see Gideon.”
“Okay, we’ll see you later.”
****
Over at ‘Gideon’s Pawn’, Tintin entered and saw Gideon sitting in a chair counting that
day’s profits. The moment he entered, the Rotwiller Gideon kept started growling angrily at
him.
“I hate that dog, man.” Tintin said.
“Yeah? She speaks so highly of you. What do you want?” Gideon asked.
Tintin walked over to where Gideon was sitting and reached into one of his pockets. He
pulled out three diamond rings and a pearl necklace and set them on the counter top.
“How much?” Tintin asked as Gideon paused in his counting of his money and looked down
at what Tintin set down. He then went back to counting his money.
“5000 yen.”
“Five? Worth 80 at least.”
“Hey! Thanks to you guys, I got cops all over me since that business … What is it? … A
year ago now? Gideon said as he then started pointing a finger at Tintin. “Yeah, a Goddamn
year! You try and keep business up for a year with the normal police and the AD police ready
to tuck you in at night.” He picks up the necklace to look closer at it. “Tell Top-dollar
I’m getting tired of this. Goddamn it still got blood on it.”
“All right … ten.”
“5100.” Gideon said smiling.
“You cheap piece of shit.”
“Look Tintin, I’m having a little trouble here maintaining my crafty leer. Why don’t
you get the fuck out?” Gideon said as he set a gun on the counter. “I already bought so
much shit from you guys that I’m choking on it.”
“You’re just like this damn dog, Gideon, a bitch. Gimmie the money.” Tintin said as
Gideon set down a 5000 yen bill and a 100 yen coin. Tintin grabbed it and shoved it in his
pocket.
“Don’t go away mad, Tintin, just go away.”
“You know, I’d watch what I feed that dog, might get a bad bone sometime.” Tintin said
as he was leaving.
“Yeah, I’m gonna feed her one punk shithead in a minute, and lock the door!”
****
After Tintin left Gideon’s, he went in search of some victim to help him get over his
anger with Gideon. After several minutes of searching, he found his victim in a dark alleyway.
He looked around and saw that they were alone and pulled out one of his knives. He walked into
the alleyway and killed his victim before his victim had a chance to scream. He then started
going through what his victim had on him.
“Do you know who you’re standing over, Tintin?” Came a voice near Tintin.
Tintin was surprised that someone had sneaked up near him without him knowing it. He
turned to face the person who talked and saw a person standing there dressed all in black,
and had his face covered in make-up. He also noticed that the man was eating an apple and
that several were around his feet.
“Where the Hell did you come from?” Tintin yelled.
“That’s Shinijo Nakamura.” Devon said, ignoring Tintin’s question.
“What’re you all painted up for? Halloween ain’t until tomorrow.”
“Do you know he used to be a hard working mechanic?” Devon said as he took a bite of
his apple. “Ran the inner-city youth hockey program, till his wife left. Then he developed
a taste for alcohol and drugs. Now he lives here, you’re standing on his house.”
“Maybe it was his house, but now it’s the killing floor.” Tintin said as he grabbed
one of his knives and threw it at Devon. “And you’re trespassing.”
The knife went sailing straight at Devon’s head. Right before the knife was going to
hit, Devon placed his left hand, palm facing his head, in the knives path, causing the knives
blade to go through his hand. Devon lowered his hand with the knife still stuck in his hand,
smiling at Tintin.
“Do you know any of them? Do you remember any of them? Do you remember me? You will.”
Devon said and stepped forward and threw the apple he was eating at Tintin. “Taste the fruit
of original sin.”
The apple sailed straight at Tintin and hit Tintin in the mouth. The apple became lodged
in his mouth, breaking several teeth, and stretching jaw to a painful point. Blood was splattered
across his face and coming out of his nose. He then proceeded to remove the apple from his mouth.
“A year ago, an apartment, a cold October night, a woman was working on her wedding dress.
Moonlight coming through the window in a shaft of light and divided the room into two halves of
diffused darkness. But the brightest thing in the room was her. The brightest was Cara.” Devon
said. Tintin meantime pulled the apple from his mouth, spitting out some blood and teeth. Tintin
reached in his belt and grabbed three knives.
“It was the life that pulsed in her and that had formed her into what she was forming her
mysteriously through the meeting of two cells, out of nothingness in a womb. It was the same
impossible truth that in one tiny seed is contained the entire tree and every tree before and
all the blossoms raining down on April mornings throughout time.” Devon said.
Tintin threw the three knives at Devon as Devon started walking towards him. What Tintin
couldn’t believe was the three knives were stopped by three apples that Devon tossed at them.
The knives fell to the ground, having impaled the apples. Devon continued his way towards Tintin.
Into this miracle came a ceaseless chaos of malevolence’s and pain and torture and death.”
Devon continued.
Devon stopped in front of Tintin as Tintin stared at him in anger, still spitting out
blood. Devon raised his left hand and took out the knife that was stuck there. He then leaned
down to face Tintin and smiled.
“You blew out this miracle, Tintin, and now I will show you the darkness you have wrought.”
Devon placed his left hand on Tintin’s head and tilts it back. The only thing anybody heard, if
they were within hearing, was Tintin’s screams of pain.
****
Back at Gideon’s, Gideon was finishing counting his money for the night, so he could close
his books for the night. As he was counting, his phone rang. As he answered it, he knew who it
was and what the person wanted to know.
“… That’s right … No … No, the illegal boomer parts are arriving in a couple days … I’m
telling you that it’s going to happen … Now just a … Where are you anyway, a church or do you
have your radio too loud … Look, I’m losing you… Doesn’t sound like static, sounds like some
sort of Damn choral music.” Gideon was saying.
As he heard it again, he realized that it wasn’t coming from the phone, but from nearby.
So he decided to look around the room to find out where the music was coming from. His looking
had stopped when he saw a man in a black trench coat standing by the few guitars he had. He
noticed that it was the man that had strum the guitar, since the man’s hand was moving away
from the guitar.
“How the Hell did you get in here?” Gideon yelled as he saw the man turn to face him.
He saw the man’s face was all painted up.
“That would be telling.” Devon said calmly. Gideon set the phone down and grabbed his
hand gun and pointed it at Devon.
“Well, get your ass out, clown. We’re closed.” Gideon said.
“I’m looking for a ring, a woman’s ring.” Devon said as he ignored Gideon and started
walking towards Gideon.
“We’re closed, come back another time.”
“An engagement ring. You bought it one year ago. It’s still here.”
“Are you deaf, I said we’re closed.” Gideon said, aiming his gun as Devon leaned over
the counter and reached his hand towards Gideon’s head.
“Do you know it only takes five pounds of pressure to remove a human ear?” Devon said
and Gideon freaked out.
“That tear’s it!” Gideon shouted and fired his gun three times, causing Devon to
stumble backwards.
****
“Gideon … Gideon … Gideon?” Yelled a man into the phone. The man turns out to be
Leon McNichol. He could hear that Gideon had dropped the phone and was talking to someone
that he couldn’t hear. It was when he heard the gun shots that he knew something was wrong
over there.
“What’s wrong?” Leon’s partner Daley Wong said.
“Something’s going on at Gideon’s. I’m going to check it out.”
“Need me to come with you?”
“I’ll call you if I do.”
“All right.”
Leon then ran out of the building.
****
Gideon was breathing hard as he saw that Devon was still standing in front of him with
three gun shot wounds in his chest. He then noticed that Devon was smiling at him as he saw
the wounds heal themselves.
“No, this tears it.” Devon said calmly as he held up an ear for Gideon to see. Gideon
realized what happened and screams in pain as he finally feels the blood running down the side
of his head. “Now listen with your good ear. T-bird and his gang brought you the ring a year
ago.”
Gideon then scrambled off to a section by the counter while placing his hand where his ear
used to be. He grabbed a small box and came back to Devon, setting down in front of him.
“All the rings I have are in here.” Gideon said.
Devon opened the box and saw a whole bunch of rings in there. He started going through
the box and for the rings that weren’t the one the one he was looking for, he tossed them over
his shoulder. It was the ninth one he grabbed that he found the ring he was looking for. He
felt the presence of Cara on it and he mumbled her name. Gideon in the mean time used Devon’s
distraction and grabbed a nearby shot gun.
“Say good night, Clown face.” Gideon said angrily.
Right before Gideon was able to pull the trigger of the shotgun, Devon had grabbed one
of the display swords that was on the counter and shoved it through Gideon’s head. The sword
started at Gideon’s neck and went up through his head. Devon then lifted Gideon up until Devon
stuck Gideon to the ceiling by the sword tip sticking through the top of Gideon’s head.
Needless to say, Devon had stuck Gideon to a light fixture and it started sparking.
When Devon released the sword, Gideon remained stuck to the sparking light fixture. Devon then
found a can of gasoline and started pouring it around the place. As he was walking to the door
to leave, one of the sparks from the light fixture had caught the gas on fire. When Devon stood
at the doorway, he turned to face Gideon.
“In times of war, Mr. Gideon, looting is a hanging offense.” Devon replied and then
walked out of the place right before it exploded.
****
Leon arrived at Gideon’s and watched as a man walked out of the building. As Leon was
about to get out of his car, the building suddenly exploded. He watched as the flames of the
explosion overcame the man that had left Gideon’s. When the flames receded, Leon saw that the
man had no marks on him as he started walking away. Leon could only figure that the man was
really a boomer, so he got out of his car and drew his gun.
“AD police don’t move.” Leon called out. The ‘boomer’ then turned to face him with a
confused look.
“I thought the police always said freeze?” Devon asked.
“I’m from the AD police and I said don’t move or your dead.”
“I say I’m dead and I move.” Devon replied and did a few dance steps to the right.
“Don’t move or I’ll shoot.” Leon said, getting annoyed with the boomer.
“Shoot if you will,” Devon bows toward Leon. “Officer McNichol.”
“How do you know me?”
“You don’t remember me? How about Cara, Cara Fiorani?”
“She’s dead, been dead for a year now. Now quit playing games and sit down.” Leon said,
nervous over the questions the boomer was asking, but was surprised when it actually sat down on
the curb. “You responsible for that explosion?”
“Satan puts on soft wings and towards the gates of Hell explores his solitary flight.”
Devon replied.
“What are you talking about?”
“They’re dead; they are all going to die.”
Leon had heard some noise behind him and when he glanced behind him, he noticed several
people looting a build that was damaged by the explosion.
“Hey!” Leon calls out to get their attention. When the people realized that a police
officer was nearby, they decided to run. Devon had used Leon’s distraction to leave the area,
when Leon remembered the ‘boomer’; he looked back and found it gone. He looked around and couldn’t
see any trace of where it went anywhere. “Oh great, Leon, how can you lose a boomer that looks
like a mime from Hell in plain sight.”
Leon decides to give up wondering about it and called the fire department and police to
inform them what was happening.

Leon only had to wait about twenty minutes before the fire department arrived to take
care of the burning building. Leon stood around until the police arrived, a few minutes later,
his partner showed up. After he told his statement to the normal police, he went over to stand
by his partner.
“So what kept you?” Leon asked.
“I was at a murder scene.” Daley replied.
“Who’s?”
“A gang member named Tintin.” Daley said and noticed a reaction from Leon. “You know
him?”
“Yes, he was one of the suspects of a murder case I was involved in over a year ago.”
“Well, when we’re done here, I’ll show you him. It seems that someone really wanted him
dead.”
“Do they know what was going on?”
“The normal police say it’s a turf hit, but the only thing is, a bird was drawn on the
wall with the victim’s blood. They don’t know any local gangs that do that.”
“That’s all we need, a new gang coming to town.”
“So what’s up with this?”
“I really don’t know, but the person I saw coming out of this building seemed familiar
to me.”
“So what did you get out of Gideon before this happened?”
“Not much. He said something about static over the phone, but he did say that the parts
were coming in. I guess we just have to wait for the Lab guys to get here to see what the cause
was.”
“You think that Gideon is still in there?”
“Yeah.”
“Poor Gideon. Looks like his past caught up with him.”
“May he roast in peace.”
“You think Top-dollar got wise?” Daley asked, and when Leon didn’t answer, he just continued
watching the fire crew putting out the fire.

At the city morgue, Leon and Daley were with the coroner to see what the coroner had on the
death of Tintin. Leon was looking through an initial report on what was found. As Leon was reading
the report, Daley was looking at the body of Tintin, lying on the table. What made the normal police
call the AD police was that all of the knives that Tintin had were pushed through his body. Leon had
finished reading the report and closed the folder.
“With Gideon dead, we have no inside man to inform us what’s going on.” Leon said.
“No kidding, look at this.” Daley said and pointed down at Tintin’s body which had fourteen
knives sticking out of his body. “The blades are all coming out of him. They’ve been pushed through
from the other side. Someone or something pushed these into Tintin and kept going.”
“That at least I can almost imagine. Multiple stab wounds, traumatic blunt force injury to
the maxilla.” The coroner said listing off thing he already had found out.
“Looks like somebody bashed his teeth in.” Leon stated.
“There are also pieces of foreign matter in his mouth. Looks like apple maybe.” The coroner
replied.

“That’s sad to hear.” Linna said once Nene was done explaining the story of how her friends
died. “And the police didn’t arrest anybody?”
“There was no proof to arrest anyone to.” Nene replied.
“So the case was labeled as unsolved?” Priss stated.
“With no one to connect to the murders, yes.” Nene said sadly.
“Did they have any suspects?” Linna asked.
“Yes, one of Top-Dollar’s gangs.” Nene replied, but it was Priss and Sylia that knew who
Nene was talking about.
“Well, now I know why you fight so aggressively.” Sylia said calmly.
“Huh?” Nene said confused.
“You’re taking your frustrations out on the boomers.” Sylia replied.
“Yes.” Nene replied when Sylia pointed it out to her. Before anyone can ask anymore
questions, Nene’s phone started ringing so she went and answered it. “Hello … Yes this is Officer
Romanova … What! … Okay, I’ll be there as soon as I can.” Nene then hung up her phone.
“What was that about?” Linna asked.
“There seems to be a rash of murders going on.” Nene replied.
“Then why are the AD police being called on it?” Priss asked.
“From the way it looks, it seems a boomer may be doing all the killing, besides, Leon-Chan
specifically asked for me for some reason.” Nene said as she went to get her coat.
“I wonder what’s going on.” Linna asked.
“When I get there and find out, I’ll call you guys.” Nene said.
“Okay.” Linna said.
Nene then left the ‘Silky Doll’ and was started on her way to the AD police headquarters
when her phone rang again. Thinking it was the station wondering what was keeping her; she checked
the number and saw that it wasn’t the station, but some unknown number, so she answered the phone.
“Hello? … Izumi? … Slow down, what’s wrong? … Where are you? … Stay put. I’ll be there right
away.” Nene said and started running to where her friend was at.
****
While Nene was talking to her friends, in an apartment above the club called ‘The Pit’, Funboy
was in bed with his latest conquest of getting a woman in bed. Both of them were necking very heavily
when a flapping sound was heard. It was the woman that turned to see what caused the noise, while
Funboy was having fun on her breasts. What she saw was a crow standing on the frame at the foot of
the bed.
“There’s a big fucking bird over there.” The woman said between moans. Funboy looked up
and saw the crow sitting there. He pulled a gun from under the pillow and aimed at the bird.
“Hey, it’s the pigeon.” Funboy chuckled.
“Hey Funboy.” A male voice said from nearby. Startled from that, Funboy looked up and saw
a man in a trench coat and had his face all painted up.
“Who the fuck are you? A clown? Very funny.” Funboy said laughing.
“I’ve never met a funny clown, only scary ones.” The man said as he walked up to the bed and
turned to face the woman. “Go and get dress, I don’t want you to see this.” The woman hesitated at
seeing the man. “Go now!” The woman quickly got out of the bed and grabbed her clothes and ran into
the bathroom. While she was running to the bathroom she heard the man say one more thing to her.
“Funboy and I are going to play.”
“Don’t you leave Izumi! Don’t you fucking leave.” Funboy shouted at the running Izumi, with
his gun still pointing at Devon. Devon walks over to the bed and grabs the barrel of the gun and pulls
it to his forehead. The crow in the meantime has flown to the window sill.
“Don’t look.” Devon said calmly, still holding the gun to his forehead.
“Man, you are really fucking hilarious.” Funboy said and pulled the trigger of the gun.
Blood splattered on Funboy’s face as Devon stumbled backwards a few steps. Funboy’s smile
dropped when he saw that Devon was still standing with a bullet hole in his forehead. He then watched
in shocked amazement as the bullet hole started closing itself. Devon started laughing as he grabbed
the gun again and jerked the gun around to face Funboy, causing Funboy’s arm to break. The sudden
motion caused Funboy to pull the trigger before his arm broke. The bullet grazed the side of Funboy’s
head as he screamed in pain as the pain of his broken arm reached his brain.
“Ah, you looked.” Devon said smiling as he released the gun and found some stuff on a nearby
table to help in his task. After he grabbed the items, Funboy started screaming in pained terror.
Izumi stayed in the bathroom until the screaming stopped. When it stopped for a while and the man
didn’t come into the bathroom, she grabbed her cell phone and called a number.
“Nene …”
****
A little while later, Leon and Daley came storming into the room with their guns drawn. They
had responded to a call that Nene had placed into the normal police, in which the normal police had told
the AD police to check it out. So when they got inside the apartment, they called out Nene’s name.
“In the bathroom.” Nene called out to them in response.
As the two of them made their way to the bathroom, they came across the reason Nene called
the police, for sitting up in bed was Funboy. But they could see that one of his arms was broken,
the side of his head looked to be grazed by a bullet, and it looked like someone beat the crap out
of him. But they were really shocked to see that two syringe needles were stuck into his eyes and
a silhouette of a bird was drawn on the wall with what appeared to be blood. Above the drawing of
the bird was a saying written in blood also, ‘Now that’s funny!’.
Once they tore themselves from the sight, Daley called in the normal police of the situation
and called the paramedics while Leon checked on Nene. He found her in the bathroom holding another
girl, who was crying hysterically. He waited until Nene looked up at him.
“What happened here?” Leon asked.
“What does it look like happened here.” Nene said angrily.
“Besides that, what is going on and who is your friend?”
“This is my friend, Izumi. She was with the victim when he was murdered.”
“Did she see who the murderer was?”
“She said that a man dressed in a black trench coat and had his face painted to look like
a mime, came into the room and told her to leave. While she hid in the bathroom, the man did that
out there. When she realized that the man wasn’t after her, when the screaming stopped, she called
me.” Nene said and noticed a look that Leon had on his face. “What is it?”
“I came across a person dressed like that earlier tonight.” Leon replied.
“Also she said a big black bird was with the man.” Nene said when she remembered that.
“Well, all that we can do now is wait for the normal police to show up and then we can figure
out what’s going on.” Leon stated.
“Alright.” Nene said and resumed trying to comfort her friend until the police arrived.
****
“So you had me called in so I could get this case file for you?” Nene asked very pissed off
at Leon. It didn’t help matters any when she had to deal with the normal police about the murdered
Funboy.
“I know what you are going through and what you are feeling.” Leon told Nene.
“How do you know?” Nene said angrily.
“I was there also if you remember.”
“Oh yeah.” Nene’s anger left her for the most part when she did remember that Leon was at
the scene of the crime.
“Am I missing something here?” Daley asked confused at the bickering between Nene and Leon.
He then noticed that Nene turned around to face away from them.
“The two victims of this case were some of Nene’s friends. She was going to see them but
instead she came across their murder scene.” Leon said to Daley and then they both watched as Nene
ran out of the room.
“Nene!” Daley called out.
“Leave her be, it was hard enough then as it is for her now.” Leon said stopping Daley from
going after Nene.
“So why did you have Nene get that file for you?” Daley asked.
“Remember what I told you about what the guy said to me at Gideon’s?”
“Yeah, what about it?”
“A night before their wedding, a part-time martial-arts instructor, Devon Knight, and his fiancée,
Cara Fiorani, was attacked. The woman was beaten, stabbed, sliced and raped, died in the hospital. Her
fiancée was stabbed, shot, and thrown out a sixteen story window. The guy at Gideon’s made a reference
to these people and I thought if I look through this case file I may get a clue on how to find him.”
“Well, I’ll let you look. I’m going to crash now before anything else tonight happens.”
“Okay, see you tomorrow.”
As Daley left the office, Leon found a black and white picture of Devon and he froze for a minute.
After staring at the picture for a while, he grabbed a nearby pen and started placing lines over the eyes
and mouth. When he was done drawing, he looked at the picture again and was surprised at what he saw.
For the person in the picture now was the person he had met at Gideon’s.
“Well, I’ll be a …”
****
Nene was heading out of the AD police headquarters, while she was holding in her tears. The
death of her two friends was still getting to her after a whole year. When Leon was explaining to
Daley what the problem she had with getting that file for Leon, she ran out of the room before either
of them could see her tears. So she decided to head home since she was done with what she was called
in for. Then when she got outside, she saw it had started to rain.
“This is just great, on top of it all, it’s raining.” Nene muttered.
So Nene started running in the rain in order to get back home. While she was running in the rain,
she kept thinking about her friend that witnessed that murder. She was partially happy about the murder,
because the person that was killed was one of the people charged with killing of her friends Devon and
Cara. She was so deep in thought that she wasn’t paying attention to her surroundings as she started
running across a street.
As she started across the street, she failed to notice a car that was coming at her. She
noticed the car when she felt someone grab her and pulled her out of harms way. When the person set
her down, she started cursing at the car.
“It couldn’t have stopped in time.” The person said.
“I could have made it.” Nene said as she then turned to face the person who helped her. The
person turned away but Nene was able to catch a glimpse of the persons face. “What are you, a clown
or something?”
“Sometimes.” The person said calmly.
“I hate this rain.” Nene said as she went to pick up her purse that she dropped.
“It can’t rain all the time.” The person said.
“What!” Nene exclaimed.
She whipped around to look at the person, but when she looked in his direction, he was no
where to be seen. What surprised her was that the saying that the person had said was what Devon
would always tell her when she would tell him that she hated the rain. After she got over her surprise,
she remembered the glimpse she had of the person and the sound of his voice, the result of those two
placed them with her friend.
“Devon?” Nene said quietly.
After standing for a few minutes more, she then started running back to her house when she
remembered it was raining and she was now thoroughly soaked. So she made her way home as fast as she
could and being more careful when crossing the streets.
****
Leon went back home after finding nothing in the case file except for the picture he marked
to recognized the person that killed Gideon and maybe Tintin and Funboy. The only problem with that
was, he knew that the person he was imitating was dead, and he knew that personally. The only things
that he could come up with is that it is a boomer that looks like Devon, or that Devon had came back
from the dead for revenge. The last thought he just couldn’t believe because no one could come back
from the dead.
It was then that he heard a noise in a different room. He went and checked out what he heard.
He entered the room and didn’t find anything out of the ordinary. The only thing that he saw was that
the window was open and he could have sworn that it was closed.
“Freeze!” Came a shout behind Leon causing him to jump. He whipped around and saw Devon
standing in the living room.
“Don’t ever do that, man.” Leon said after he got his heart beating at normal pace. Devon
just smiled and started walking towards Leon. It was then that he noticed the picture on a table.
Devon stopped and picked up the picture and took a look at it. Devon saw it was an old black and
white picture of himself with penned in lines that match the make-up design he is wearing.
“Good likeness.” Devon said as he set the picture down.
“How can it be you? I saw the body, you were dead and buried.” Leon said as he was trying
to figure it out, he sat down because he didn’t trust his legs to keep him up at the moment. At the
same time, Devon had walked to the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of beer from the refrigerator and walked
back to Leon. When Leon saw him walking towards him again, he started asking a question that was on his
mind. “Are you … some kind of ghost?”
“Boo.” Devon said and opened the beer and handed it to Leon. He then sat in a chair that was
across from Leon. “I don’t know what I am, but I need you to tell me what happened to Cara and myself.”
“What can I say, you were stabbed, shot, and took a sixteen story swan dive out of your window.
Cara was beaten, raped, and died thirty hours later. Come on, it’s all in the file, you can see for
yourself.” Leon said.
Leon got out of the chair to get the file to hand over to Devon, when Devon came up behind him
and turned him around. Devon then grabbed Leon’s head in both of his hands and suddenly images of Cara
in the ER appeared in his head. When the images finished, he stumbled backwards until he ran into a
back of a chair. Leon came to help, but Devon swatted Leon’s hands away.
“Don’t touch me!” Devon said as he stumbled onto the floor next to a coffee table.
“You okay?” Leon asked concerned as he saw Devon look up at him.
“I saw her, I saw her through your eyes. You stayed with her the whole time.” Devon said.
“I was hoping she would pull out to give us something to go by.”
“Why didn’t you do anything about it?”
“Come on; think the tenants would testify after what happened to you two. Even all the tenants
that signed refused to say anything.”
Devon looked over on the table and saw a picture of a girl at a concert singing. He grabbed
the picture and looked over at Leon.
“Your wife?” Devon asked.
“No, just someone I care for, but I wouldn’t mind if she was.” Leon replied as he lit a
cigarette.
“It’s funny. All the little things meant so much to Cara. I use to think they were trivial,
believe me, nothing is trivial.” Devon said as he then grabbed the cigarette from Leon and took a drag
off of it and then holds it up. “Shouldn’t smoke these, they’ll kill you.” He then snubs out the
cigarette and then stands up and heads towards the front door.
“Are you going to vanish in thin air again?” Leon asked.
“I thought I’d use your front door.” Devon replied.
“I’m sorry as Hell for what happened to you and your girlfriend.” Leon said.
“Yeah.” Devon said and then left the apartment, using the front door.
****
The next morning, after getting a call from Nene about what happened last night after she left,
Sylia decided to check the grave site of Nene’s friend. From what Nene told her, it seems that someone
is using Devon’s body to create an assassin boomer. Normally Sylia wouldn’t bother with any of this,
but since its Nene’s friend that is the problem, she decided to check it out.
She had drove out to the grave yard and walked towards the grave site. She expected to see
evidence of grave robbing, but the sight she saw was not what she expected. She didn’t believe people
came back from the dead, but the sight of seeing the casket lid being pushed out of the ground, and that
someone was clawing the lid from the inside, could only mean a few things, and one of them she hoped
wasn’t it. After she saw what she wanted to see, she headed back home to think about what it was that
she saw and see if she could find any information on the situation.
****
Nene, at the meantime, was heading over to the building where her friends use to live, because
she couldn’t think of anywhere else to look for the person she was looking for. As she entered the room,
she could tell that someone was in the room, instantly. Some of the furniture was moved, a couple was
now broke, and it looked like someone was recently burning some stuff. So she then started looking
around the room, but couldn’t find anyone.
“I know it was you, Devon.” Nene said as she continued looking around. “You were the only one
that would tell me ‘It can’t rain all the time’ whenever I said I hated the rain.” She continued looking
but gave up and started heading towards the door. “I thought you cared about me.”
“I do care for you.” Came Devon’s voice when Nene had reached the door. She turned around and
saw Devon standing in the middle of the room. She rushed over and gave him a hug in which Devon returned.
So he had them move to sit on the couch.
“I’ve missed you, you and Cara. Is she with you?” Nene asked.
“No. Sometimes I visit her where she is. I can see her sleeping, feeling her warm on my skin,
it’s warm. I want her arms around me; I want to taste her soft mouth. I want her to wake up, but maybe
she’ll wake up when they’re all dead. I’m not with Cara right now, but soon.” Devon replied and then
paused while he looked around the room. “You come here to hide, don’t you? Because the city is dark
and full of wolves.”
“Not to hide, just to rest and think of you guys.” Nene said.
“Rest.” Devon said to quietly for Nene to hear.
“You got blood all over yourself, are you hurt?”
“Mortally. It’s the nature of being … too many lonely nights.”
“I took something from your apartment before the police could, it wouldn’t have helped them.
I think you might want to have it, since … she’s not around. I’ve thought about you and her a lot.”
Nene said as she handed over a cassette tape over to Devon. Devon took the tape and then headed to a
window and leaps onto the ledge. “What are you going to do?”
“I have to break down the forts and barricades of the night. I have only begun to make the incision.”
Devon said and then jumped out the window. Nene quickly rushed to the window.
“Wait!”
When Nene got to the window and looked out, but saw no trace of Devon. After a while, she decided
to leave. As she left the building, her cell phone rang and she found out it was Sylia and she needed to
talk to everyone. Nene sighed in acceptance and made her way to Sylia’s place.
****
Devon glanced over the roof’s edge, after he jumped out of the window, and watched as
he saw Nene step out of the building and answer her phone. After she hung up and sighed, he
watched her start running off. After she was gone, Devon went and placed the cassette into
a walkman and pushed play. He then heard Cara’s voice talking.
“I’m waiting. Waiting for the night to shake down rain from the stars. Actually,
I’m just waiting for you to get back with the Chinese food. Hi, it’s me, Cara, and I’m
starving. But I thought if I just talked into this tape, it would be like talking with you.
“You remember how you left me a tape whenever you had to take a trip anywhere?
Well, this is like that, only you’re just down the street. It’s only a few hours till the
wedding, I feel like there is so much to do. Nene said she’d be here to help; she has
such an old soul for one so young.
“Oh something wonderful happened today. When I was getting my hair trimmed, there
was a little girl who was getting her hair cut also. Her little sister sat nearby with her
mother. The girl would peek up from beneath her bangs whenever the stylist would stop even
for an instant to see if there was any change. Her little sister was wiggling like a fish
in the bottom of a boat. You could see it on her face, there were obviously balls waiting
outside to be bounced, kites to be flown, dirt to be filtered through finding fingers,
there were plies of acorns and leaves to throw and swings to be swung.
“The tree swept air outside was changed with falls electricity and she should be
out there. What on Earth, she wondered almost aloud, was she doing in this place where
people fussed with each others hair. Time enough for all of this when she got older and
she had to do it and it struck me.
“I started thinking about all of the kites, and all of the leaves which dance and
swoop up into windy circles, and then I think of all the children. I really want us to
have children. Devon, it’s so perfect what we have, when we walk together or talk together,
I can hardly believe it. It’s impossible that I found you, but like you said yesterday,
‘We shouldn’t be blinded by things merely believable’.
“We are such delicate creatures, and yet we have life, faith, love, and hope.
When we love each other, we are immortal and indestructible, like the heartbeat and the
rain and wind and that is much. The hours I’m with you are life, however many or few,
every moment, that moment is closest to eternity. Your eyes glisten, star dust trickles
through infinity, and I know, the wholly miraculous difference between before you and now.
You have helped me to remember myself, like the sea remembering all of its waves.” Cara
had stopped talking when there was knocking on the door.
“Oops, I gotta go, that’s you at the door, you forgot your keys again. I love
you …Bye.”
Devon turned off the walkman as a tear fell from his eye as he collapsed backwards,
screaming in anguished pain. He laid there until the nighttime came and he went after his
next target.
****
Nene arrived at Sylia’s place and found that Priss and Linna were already there.
Priss and Linna asked Nene what had kept her, and she just said that she had business to
take care of and it took a while for her to return. They were going to continue but Sylia
got their attention when she entered the room.
“So what’s this about?” Priss asked.
“I have found out some things about this ‘boomer’ that is going around killing
people.” Sylia replied.
“What have you found?” Linna asked.
“I have gone and visited your friend’s grave, Nene.” Sylia said.
“What! Uh, what did you find out?” Nene asked somewhat nervously.
“I went there to see if anyone had disturbed the grave.” Sylia said.
“Did anyone?” Priss asked.
“It was strange, because it looked like the person that was in the grave had
pushed themselves out.” Sylia said calmly.
“What!” Priss and Linna exclaimed.
“You don’t seem surprised Nene.” Sylia pointed out.
“Um… well…” Nene tried explaining.
“You’ve seen him, haven’t you?” Sylia pointed out.
“Yes.” Nene admitted.
“What! Whatever it is, it could have killed you.” Linna said.
“I don’t know how, but it was Devon and I know he wouldn’t harm me.” Nene said.
“But still …” Linna said.
“I may have an answer to that.” Sylia said.
“What?” Priss asked.
“After I returned, I looked up information about returning from the dead.” Sylia said.
“How can you believe that crap?” Priss asked.
“I don’t, but there is a strong proof to tell me otherwise.” Sylia said.
“What do you mean?” Priss asked.
“Nene, was there any marks to connect those three killings?” Sylia asked Nene.
“A symbol of a bird. Two scenes had a drawing of a bird on the wall with the victim’s
blood. The other one was a bunch of melted rings that formed a bird. What does that have
to do with Devon?” Nene asked.
“When you saw him, did he have a crow with him?” Sylia asked.
“I didn’t see one, but Izumi said that a big black bird showed up before Devon did.”
Nene answered.
“What does a crow have to do with coming back from the dead?” Priss asked.
“The group I found that informed me about this, they have a saying. ‘People once
believed that when someone dies, a crow carries their soul to the land of the dead. Sometimes,
something so bad happens that a terrible sadness is carried with it. Then sometimes, just
sometimes, the crow will bring the soul back to put the wrong things right.’” Sylia said.
“You’re saying that this Devon fellow came back from the dead to set things right?”
Linna asked.
“I don’t know, but the evidence is there and he wasn’t the only one. There have
been several reports of this ‘Crow Theory’ documented.” Sylia said.
“So what are we going to do about this Devon guy?” Priss asked.
“I would suggest doing nothing. Once he’s done with what he has to do, he will
leave again, besides, we fight boomers, and not people back from the dead.” Sylia said.
They continued talking, but everyone agreed to leave Devon alone. After they were
done, Nene had to leave to report to work while Priss and Linna left for their own things.
****
The next person that Devon went after was T-bird. He followed him until he was alone
and then went and knocked him out. Devon threw him inside his car and drove him outside the
city limits until they were out in an open area. He dragged T-bird out of the car, just as
he was coming to. Devon threw him on the hood of the car and pulled out a jack knife. He
then grabbed T-bird’s tongue and pulled it out of his mouth and cut if off with the knife.
The shock and pain of the ordeal caused him to pass out. Devon moved T-bird around so he
wouldn’t chock to death on his own blood.
Devon then grabbed the tongue and placed it in the glove compartment. He then grabbed
a shovel and started to dig a hole. When the hole was deep enough, he grabbed T-bird and threw
him in. He then started to fill the hole in again until T-bird’s head was the only thing sticking
out of the ground. Devon then sat on the car and waited until T-bird came to, he didn’t need
to wait long.
“Mmudabble dool dool!” T-bird tried talking.
“So little in common with your namesake.” Devon said as he walked in front of T-bird
so he could see him. “You know T-bird, I look at all the drek I send his way and I gotta tell
you, the Devil is under paid. The natives of America know when a vision comes; it comes with
terror like a thunder storm. But when the storm of vision has passed, the world is greener and
happier. For whenever the truth of vision comes upon the world, it is like rain. The world, you
see, is happier after the terror of the storm.”
“Mmudabble dool.” T-bird tried saying.
“You have these wheels looking fine. Nice and low.” Devon said as he walked over to the
car.
“Mubill dis dool.”
“You sound bored T-bird. You’re going to have to speak up if you want to be heard.” Devon
said as he opened the trunk to the car. “And such a nice assortment of weaponry.”
Devon then gets into the drivers seat and starts the car up. He revs the engine a couple of
times and places the car in drive. He could hear T-bird mumble something, but he just smiled.
“If thy tongue offends thee …” Devon said as he slammed his foot on the gas petal, running
over T-bird.

Nene was sitting at her station, doing her work almost on auto-pilot. The reason she was
like that was she was thinking about what Sylia said about people coming back from the dead to seek
vengeance. She was so deep in thought that she didn’t notice when Leon stood next to her.
“Hey Nene.” Leon said after a bit, causing Nene to jump.
“Don’t do that, you scared me.” Nene said once she saw who it was.
“Sorry, but it seemed you were deep in thought there.”
“I was.” Nene said and then pauses. “Leon, do you believe people can come back from the
dead?”
“Since you didn’t call me by your usual nicknames, I’m thinking you’re serious here. Are
you talking in general or a specific person?”
“You’ve met him also.” Nene said as she realized what Leon was implying.
“Yeah, visited me last night at home.” Leon said.
“What are we going to do?” Nene asked.
“I don’t know.” Leon replied. Just then, Daley came running over to them.
“Here’s where you are.” Daley said.
“What’s up?” Leon asked.
“T-bird just drove his car into the front window of the ‘Blackout’.” Daley replied.
“Top dollar’s club? T-bird doesn’t have the balls for it.” Leon said.
“Or the head.” Daley said.
“Exactly.” Leon said.
“No, I mean he doesn’t have a head. He has no head. The body in the driver’s seat was
T-birds, but it had no head.” Daley said handing Leon a few pictures to show him.
“I guess questioning him is a waste of time.” Leon said.
“Always was. But we did find a tongue; it was probably his, in the glove compartment.
And another thing, they found a bunch of dirt like he’d been buried.”
“You better bring Skank in.”
“What for?”
“Probably to save his miserable life.”
“Okay.” Daley said and then left to go find Skank.
“I guess we’ll talk later.” Leon said to Nene.
“Okay.” Nene said as she watched Leon leave.

Skank was at his apartment, looking out the window at the little girls walking by. Then
suddenly a bird flew across his vision, spooking him. He ran out of his apartment and down the stairs.
When he reached the bottom of the stairs, he failed to see when a person stuck their foot out and
tripped Skank up. Skank tripped over the foot and landed on his face. He suddenly felt himself
being picked up and thrown against a wall. He then saw it was Detective Wong that was holding him
up as blood ran from his nose.
“Wong … Detective Wong …” Skank said.
“You know, you mess up my whole sense of language, Skank. It’s people like you that make
me want to use words like asshole and shithead instead of suspect and perpetrator.” Daley said.
“Wha? What do you want?”
“Maybe you haven’t heard yet, but another of your pals just made the obituaries. T-bird was
hit just a couple of hours ago.”
“Tintin, Funboy, …then … T-bird.”
“And let’s not forget Gideon. Who is offing Top dollars crew? It’s not like I’d miss you
Skank, but I got a vested interest here.”
“I … I … I don’t know anything.” Skank said and suddenly they could hear a bumping noise
getting closer from the stairs.
“Word on the street puts your boss with some very illegal parts. Something large perhaps
being expected?” Daley said.
“I don’t know what the fuck’s going on, I swear it Detective.”
“Listen to me Skank; if I find you’re bird watching again, I’ll put you away in a heartbeat.
This time when you’re inside, I’ll make it my personal business to introduce you to the residents who
really frown on chicken hawks.”
Suddenly the bumping sounds stopped. Skank glanced over Daley’s shoulder and became wide-eyed.
“Fu-fu-fuck me …” Skank muttered.
Daley looked in the direction Skank was looking and saw T-bird’s head laying at the bottom of
the stairs.
“Let me go Wong, aww man, you gotta let me go. It’s the Bird-man. I’m fucking next,
I’m fucking next.” Skank yelled trying to get out of Daley’s grip.

When her shift was over, Nene decided to head home. She changed out of her uniform
and left the building. As she was walking away from the AD police headquarters, she failed
to notice a van following her. When she was about a block away from the headquarters, the
van pulled up along side her and two boomers jumped out and captured her. They pulled her
into the van kicking and screaming. When they had her inside, the van started racing away
from the scene. The witnesses that saw that, started calling on to inform the police.
****
“Hey! Give me a gun!” Skank yelled from his cell. “Give me a gun. Man, you
gotta give me a gun, a knife, something. I gotta protect myself man, fuck.” He looks
around and sees nobody around. “Hey somebody!”
“Skank, you want a gun?” Came a voice from the cell window.
“What? Top? Mercer? Is that you Angel? Help me, man, you gotta help me.” Skank
said.
“Here catch.” The voice said and a gun was tossed into the cell and Skank caught it.
“Alright man, yeah! Let that fucking bird-man show his face now … ha ha.”
“Skank, you want a knife?”
“Yeah, a knife would be good too, man.” Skank said as a knife was tossed in the cell
and he quickly caught it. “Can’t be too careful now. Now I’m ready, now I am.”
“Skank, you ready now?”
“You bet man, that was righteous, thanks.”
“One more thing.”
Suddenly Skank felt something metallic bounce off his head and land on the floor. He
looked down at the item and saw it was an explosive.
“Oh shit.” Skank said as he realized what was going to happen.
“Poooom!!” The explosive went off.
Devon walked away from the police holding cells as smoke billowed out of one of the
windows. As emergency teams made their way to the scene, Devon looked over his shoulder at the
scene and smiled evilly as he made his way to his next destination.

As Devon approached Cara’s grave, he suddenly received a vision from his Crow. In the
vision he saw Nene being held in the ‘Blackout’. He noticed that she was roughed up a little
bit, but otherwise just fine. When the vision left, he stumbled a bit until he used a headstone
to steady himself.
“Devon.” Came a male voice behind him. He turned and saw that Leon was standing nearby.
What can I do for you, officer McNichol?” Devon asked.
“I thought I could find you here.” Leon said.
“There aren’t many places left for me.” Devon replied.
“You just took out Skank, didn’t you?” Leon said.
“Yes, but you aren’t here because of that, what is it?”
“Nene’s been kidnapped.”
“I know, she’s at the Blackout.”
“How’d you know that and why aren’t you doing anything?”
“A little birdie just told me.”
“A little birdie?”
“You and your partner free Nene, I have one last piece of business to take care of.”
“What is more important than Nene?”
“Top dollar.”
“How’d …”
“Tintin and Funboy were nice enough to tell me who ordered our death. Like I said,
free Nene, I’ll see you there.”
With that, Devon ran off, leaving behind Leon to call his partner and chase after
Devon, before he did too much damage.
****
“So why did we kidnap that AD police officer?” Mercer asked Top dollar.
“A little incentive for our visitor to show.” Top dollar replied.
“Who would that be?”
“A person that has been killing T-bird’s gang off.”
“The same person that caused T-bird’s car to go through the window?”
“Probably. Maybe he is just trying to get my attention, and I must say he has gotten
it.”
“So we are just waiting then?”
“Yes.”
“Gentlemen.”
Guns were drawn when a voice called out. They saw as a person in a trench coat and his
face was painted up. The person then stood at the far end of the table opposite of Top dollar,
Mercer, and a boomer. Top dollar sat in his chair as he watched Devon stand there.
“You’re the guy who bumped my boy’s right? As you might have guessed, I’m a little short
handed. You looking for a job?” Top dollar asked. Devon smiled evilly and jumped up onto the
table.
“I am the will, but I am the delirium. Hatching from a nameless gleam of light I see
monstrous flowers and frightening roses … all nightmares.” Devon said as he started walking
closer to the group. “Black gulf, be silent, thunder, for I have come to welcome you to the
Abyss.”
Devon then whips guns out from the coat and started shooting the boomer until it was
destroyed and the guns were emptied. As a response to the guns that Devon drew, Top dollar
and Mercer opened fire on Devon. What surprised them, was when they opened fire on Devon,
he didn’t drop dead. They had emptied their clips into him and he was still standing. When
their guns were empty, they grabbed some more and started shooting again.
“What the fuck are you?” Mercer yelled out as he kept shooting.
Devon then grabbed another gun and shot Mercer in the left knee, causing him to drop
to the ground. Top dollar continued shooting as Devon went over to Mercer and grabbed Mercer’s
head and smashed it into the table, breaking his nose and knocking him out cold.
“You don’t know do you? How disappointing.” Devon said as he turned to face Top dollar.
He took Mercer’s gun and fired off a shot that took off Top dollar’s left hand. The pain shot
through Top dollar and he dropped to his knees. Top dollar then tried as best as he could to
cradle his left arm as Devon walked in front of him. “You sent a group of men to an apartment.
It was autumn, one year ago.”
“Oh yeah, I remember. What a fucking mess. I sent them to scare the girl, but instead
they whack her and her boyfriend. That’s what dust will do for you heh, heh.” Top dollar said.
Top dollar uses the distraction and pulls the gun up and shoots Devon from his chest all
the way to his head until the gun was empty. The force of the shots made Devon to lean backwards
and brought the arm that was holding the gun up and he pulled the trigger. The bullet went and hit
Top dollar in his left knee. Top dollar dropped his gun as he then went and held his injured knee.
“But … they had fun, and that’s the main thing right? Funboy was very pleased with her.
Said she smelled real good, like a ripe peach. But you can’t go by him; he’s a bottom-feeder, a
carrier. Skank kept saying about how they dolled her up in some wedding dress. Tintin was talking
about that girl for a month, said she was so fine, even after he cut her. And T-bird, the sick fuck,
said she was s better lay after they …” Top dollar said until Devon stopped him.
“Enough!” Devon yelled as he placed the gun between the eyes of Top dollar. “You are dead.
Here, let me show you.”
“Fuck you.” Top dollar said
Devon pulled the trigger, blowing the top part of Top dollar’s head off. The body fell
backwards, leaving a dead body with a missing left hand, a shot up left knee, and a missing top
part of a head. Devon just stood over the body as it laid there.
“Put the gun down!” Came a shout behind him.
Devon turned around and saw Leon, with his partner who is aiming a gun at him, and Nene
behind them. As Devon looked at them, he knew that Daley would shoot at him given a reason.
“As you wish.” Devon said as he holds the gun away from him and drops it.
Before Leon or Daley could stop her, Nene ran towards Devon. She stopped in front of him and
looked him over. She noticed that he was covered in blood, his clothes were all covered with bullet
holes and blood, and he looked paler than the last time she saw him. She also noticed that some of
his wounds weren’t healing. Devon was also looking Nene over and saw that she was alright, expect
for a torn shirt that revealed a good portion of her bra.
“What happened to you, you look like shit.” Nene asked.
“I’ve been better.” Devon said and noticed that Leon was making Daley back off for a moment.
“Why aren’t you healing anymore?”
“I’m on borrowed time now, my purpose for being here is over.”
“You can’t leave again.”
“I’m sorry Nene, but I must go back to Cara. Here.” Devon said as he took Nene’s hand and
set’s Cara’s engagement ring in her hand. “I know Cara would want you to have it. Keep it with you
at all times and Cara and I will be with you always.”
“Thank you.” Nene said and saw Devon go and turn to leave.
“Hey wait.” Daley shouts out. Devon turns back to face Daley. “You got several questions
to answer.”
“I’m afraid that they will remain answerless.” Devon said.
Devon then runs to the nearest window and jumps out of it. Daley, Leon, and Nene run to it and
look out, but Devon was no where to be seen. They give up and Daley calls the police to take care of
the situation they had in the room, while Leon took Nene back home. Leon gave Nene a jacket to wear
to cover her up, but en route back, Nene had Leon drop her off at the graveyard.
After she persuaded Leon to leave her alone, she made her way to the grave sites of Devon and
Cara. When she got there, she saw that the sites were normal, like no one had disturbed them at all.
She looked down at the ring she had slipped on her finger and then at the graves.
“I’ll miss you guy’s, be there for each other.” Nene said and then she saw as the crow landed
on Devon’s tombstone. “Hey, Night watchman, look after them for me, will you?” The crow kaw’s in
acceptance. “Thanks.”
Nene then says her final farewells for her friends and heads home to get some sleep, for she
knows that the next day is going to be filled with answering questions she doesn’t know how to answer
them.
