Finding a story
Part one of "how to MST"
So, you want to learn MSTings? Of course, you do. Why else would you be
here? Of course, you may have taken a wrong turn. In that case, your memory will
be erased, and you will remember going into a page about quilting.
Anyway, here's the first step to doing a MST. You first must find
something to MST. Now, sometimes, that can't be as easy as clicking a button
once and finding everything that you want. You've got to go hunting.
Most of the time, the bad authors won't be hiding in clear sight. They'll
be in the unfashionable section of the net, where no one will ever find their
stuff (thankfully). If they know that they're bad, they'll want o hide it away
from the world. If they don't know it, then they've probably got dillusions of
grandeur and are thinking that they'll get discovered by making entries into
pages that don't get hits by sane people. You should also check for the usual
suspects (Oscar, Ratliffe, Gonterman, Dr. Thinker, etc.). I,wouldn't recommend
doing these types of fics without a bit of experience under your belt. Reading
these could cause irreparable damage with out a bit of tolerance before-hand.
When you think that you've found a story, scan it to see if it's bad
enough or has enough bad parts to make good riffs. If you can only find one
every couple of paragraphs, then don't do it. You need to be able to be making
constant riffs, or the MST will be considered dull and Meta-MSTing material. I
can just see Crow making riffs at some of my earlier stuff.
Okay, so you've found a story that seems to be good enough for MSTing.
Now, what you must do is to go to the big MSTing sites on the web (Web Site
Number Nine, Shinji's Vault of Anime MSTings, for example) and check their dibs
pages. If you've never been there, then a dibs page is what people use to call
"dibs" on a certain peice, saying that they're the ones who are going to do
it.(Uh, oh! Better run for the hills, Eyeball! They've got dibs!) You should
check the whole list and the things that are already posted, to see if yours has
already been called or done. If you find that your choice is not available (it
*does* happen), then go back to square one. If not, then you should put a dibs
up on the sites that you checked. If you don't have the patience or time to do
all that checking, then just say screw it and go ahead with it. You can check
later.
